that was with the 45 pilot in i thought if you go more than say 2.5 turns out and the idlle still keeps increasing you should go down on pilot ? and i couldnt seem to get it to idle properly with the 45 thats why i whent back down to the 35 which was in it when i had the bike.allso with the 45 in it seemed very rich oily tail pipe and header ?

Yes-no-maybe! The first thing I would do if I was tuning your bike would be to install a 3.0 slide and set air screw at 1.5 turns. With that slide I would then warm up engine and begin to adjust idle so it will idle on its own, idle speed adjustment. If I had to keep "blipping throttle" to keep it running or turn idle screw in and see it start to smoke heavily then I would increase slide cutout untill its satisfactory.
I know this bike is not the same as yours. My 82 430XC is a low hour "survivor", re-ringed standard bore, carb stock. It was just like yours at idle when I got it. It had a 2.0 slide in it and I started grinding on it without ever changing the pilot jet untill it ran good. I let the air intake dictate how much fuel is going to be "pulled" out of the pilot circuit. Yes going to a smaller pilot would somewhat do the same but it is doing it with more fuel metering than air thus causing a bog/stumble between circuits instead of circuit overlap for smooth throttle. Again just my opinion.:excuseme:

back to where i was before really,b8 plug in 1 3/4 out on air screw and about 1 turn out on iddle and top notch on clip on neddle.runs good no oily spooge ticks over little lumpy but ok iddle does hang just a little think im going to change neddle and pilot to 30 but is running ok dont want to cut the slide to find out it was something else if you know what i mean,as a slide here in uk is about £40 and i dont want to mess it up.

Slide mods.. really very easy to do... I'm sure you can do it yourself or offer to pick up a few "Pints" for the guy at your local machine shop...

    http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9362&highlight=slide

Exhaust all your needle/jet options and then go to this... with a 2.0 Slide currently you can now go to a 2.5 or a 3.0 Slide Mod with very little concern about fffing anything up....

390 CR ProCircuit Jetting From 1980

"Jetting for 250/390 CR 1980 ProCircuit
Here is the reccomended jetting for the 1980 250/390 CR from ProCircuit for Southern California elevation 0 to 3000 ft

Pro Circuit knew Huskys back in the day information is a direct quote from ProCircuit

    250 CR Husky 1980
    38 mm Mikuni Round slide
Stock Needle 6DH3 change to 6F15
Stock Main jet 430 change to 480
Stock R2 Needle Jet change to R0 or Q8
    Go to a 60 Pilot
These changes from the stock factory bike will result in cleaning up the bottom end and make the top end a lot fatter.

    390 CR Husky 1980
    38mm Mikuni Round Slide
all the same changes but go with a 50 Pilot"

Note to PatGas - the 6F15 needle is really much better. More consistent thru the entire range...

The 6DH3 needle may work fine and look fine but may actually be worn out. IF replacing use the 6F15 .... I used the same on my 83 YZ490 along with the slide mod and the bike ran incredibly better and started easy hot or cold...

You are now armed and dangerous!!!:D:D:D

    Good luck!

    slide mod

guys going to do the slide mod today can i do it with a fine file ? or grind it off or does it have to be machined allso what plug gap you running

Yes .. you can do it with a fine file ... give your self a line with a sharpie / black marker and make sure to file it flat and straight.... easier if you hit up your local machine shop but you can do it at home!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Start in the middle and work your way out. Do not extend cut to the slide cutouts for the guide side and idle screw side. I run .018 plug gap.

I'll have to say I've never seen a husky run well with the 2.0 slide (that's 250/390/430/500 air cooled). You can try to jet around it but it's never really right until you go to 2.5 or 3.0.

And the suggestion about a worn needle or needle jet... I just had this problem! One one of my 430's. I built up a used carb of used parts and put in my "usual proven jetting" and the bike blubbered and drooled like a pig. I bought a new needle and needle jet, same size, and now it runs fine. It was just old and worn out.

The local Husky shop here "in the day" modded the slide during dealer assembly. He said he learned it from the factory guys that were here for the Bad Rock Six Days. He said modding the slide kept his complaints down on the new bikes. I worked for him after school (81-82) for parts for mine and did alot of watching-asking questions. he was kinda grumpy so I always acted like I perfectly understood his answers to my questions! Never wanted to be a pesky kid so I stayed out of his hair. Went by and saw him awile back and he gave me a couple of sprocket to rotor holders and a factory GP manual. Showed him the original MSO and recipt for my 82 430XC that sold new at his place. Sorry, sorta got off track

    well well

did slide mod today wich makes the idlle and pilot a lot more sensative started of with 2.5 didnt make great amount of difference so whent to 3.0.but with the 35 pilot and 6f15 nedlle only way she will idle right is with air screw 1/4 turn out when i go to 1.5 she starts to hunt and unstable idlle tried 30 pilot but wasnt any better, have i gone too large on cut away on slide ?

I know this will sound like going the wrong way but put a 40-45 pilot in it. That hunting is a too lean condition. Anytime the engine rpm goes up the signal through the carb increases also. Go up on your pilot, You are headed in the right direction:thumbsup:

    yep

just dawned on me after i posted i now have put 40 pilot in 1.5 turns out on air screw 4th clip on nedlle about 1 turn out on idlle, starts ok hot and cold but smokes a little when i blip the throttle doesnt smoke much when idlling but puff of smoke when i blip it.probally best im going to get.doesnt seem to stumble 0-1/8 throttle like it did yet to give it a good run but does smoke a little.

    good good

:thumbsup:thanks for your input guys much appreciated, will let you know how i get on with it after good spin.forgott to mention does take little while to idlle down is this a too rich pilot circuit or quit normall for huskys, allso sometimes hunts slightly if i open throttle wide and let it idlle down when coming back to idlle only slightly

I don't know on this one... I know that ProCircuit recommended the 60 pilot for the 390... worth a try... and you may be able to move off of pos 4 back towards three..
