having hardship starting this bike now
after finding base gasket problem i thought it would be a doddle starting the beast but alas no
pulled the carb stripped and cleaned out evert bit still no joy
    new plug still nothing
swapped the stator off for the spare motor one and although im getting a spark its irratic and not the best
even flamed out the cylinger and heated the cylinder with a heat gun still no go
it started twice in a row but cut out even got to trottle it and it died like no juice but plug is wet :banghead:
airscrew was out 8 turns so i have that out 1.5 turns
coil wire was broken in a few places and ive wrapped that in rubber tape so next action is fit a jap coil with a good lead to see will she light up the plug a bit better 20160221_230353[1].jpg 20160221_162218[1].jpg 20160221_162157[1].jpg

My '85 WRX came to me with no kill switch as well. What are people thinking?
Everyone should start a big bore 2 cycle with no exhaust once in their life, just to say they did.

Not sure if the '83 is the same as my '85 & '86 400's, but I find with a full tank, slowly lower the bike on it's left side, after a few seconds, gas will start dripping out of the carb, upright it, choke, and kick. Been starting mine reliably like that for 20 years (except for that time the ignition went out). Also, sounds like you want to make yours 'pretty' and not race it. That being the case, you can retard your timing by a degree or two for easier starts (less kick-back, if you're encountering that). It'll still run relatively strong (though you do give away some power doing this).

    thanks for the reply
i will give the 20 year method a go and if it works i will do it that way
at least 5 hours kicking and trying different things i saw no kickback
in my ipinion its a poor kick method that produces a kickback rather than timing as ive mine advanced a tad
as for how i will have the bike looking will be prestine but after yesterdays spin and a few more im going to race it at least once to see how it performs
the doner bike is ideal as im not too concerned about dropping it

Just to add to the sellers lies
while starting the bike some (wadding as i thought )came out the tail so i popped off the pipe and found a nice mouses nest inside

    Whats peoples views on this
ive the makings of one complete 83 cr 500 mint bike and will have 90% of an 84 bike so im thinking of doing a hybrid using rmx front end and making the missing parts i need so copying the husky stuff etc
brakes are crap on the cr so a disc would be the way to go
    just as a fun bike

would be much easier using a 90s husky front end...as it will slip right on. altho i suppose you already have the rmx front end?

    85-88 forks fit right in
even look correct if you look past the fact it's disc
no mods needed, just need the forks, wheel, caliper, master and brake line

ugh, coil no sparky..mine was cracked and had yet run enough to melt thru the insulation at the short and fry it to the frame yet my friend said it was running great! ..but it hurt his leg to kick it and vice versa...so retardo ignitio sounds like The Plan..which is on hold for me for the nonce.

If you want to but a whole new ignition there are many threads about that, the search function here actually works. ..and there is a sponsor(s)(yay!) who sells ignitions and a sponsor (I think) who restores Motoplat coils and stators etc. Various prices he quoted to me for just a new coil wire or full rewinds..in the UK and about $16 to ship each way IIRC. Total restore was near the price of new other ignition products so...
I'll dig the address out if you want, I am knackered and off to zzzzzzz

use the search thinghy here and put yer feet up and read read read.

    Good stuff, keep posting.

heh, your friend holding that big engine: caption should read :

To ride this motorcycle you must be able to do this.

good link, thanks, but, well, it does say this:
"unless your existing coil also contains some of the CDI circuitry."

now I dunno but I think the Motoplat mini 6 has the CDI potted up in the coil...amiright?...on my 86 wr 400LC.

I think it was...disonny maybe who linked recently/last few months to the chinese pit bike coils/ignition kits some said they made work.

dunno what you have on the 83 500CR........Bueller?..anybody?

here's the link to the Motoplat repair and restoration fella, quoted me the range of prices for repairing the coil wire replacement to the total rewind...as someone pointed out, nearing the price of the new replacement ignition systems from the advertisers here. He's in the UK, quoted shipping as less than $20 each way iirc.

Ive tried a few coils non seem to work so i just shortned my lead screwed in the cap and starts 1st kick so all i need is the lead replaced so i can mount it back up in the frame
im thinking the same the cdi is built into the coil as theirs nothing else ie little box to run things
