    Gary,
    Nice stable of rides there.
Sorry I hadn't answered up. Wanted to talk to the guys who did mine first to see if they had any interest. Its pricey but they'll do it. PMed you.

Hi, I just mounted the UDX 60 forks on a Maico. I made the triple trees and the steering stem (T7075). Maybe I can help you mount yours.

    Rick,
Thanks for checking with your machinist and PM'ing me the details. Like you said, a process that's kinda pricey but gets the job done. Your project bike looks really cool -
have been following the build up closely. You may start a new class of vintage racing -
supermoto! Good luck with the rest of the assembly.

    1983XC175,
That is some stunning machine work. I've never seen a Maico with USD forks before!
I'm not sure about proceeding with the YZ fork swap at this time. Seems like it may require too much $$ for me to do the swap on my 82 250 XC. My plan B is to use some
Husky forks and a disc brake set-up that I have from an 85-87 period bike.

    1983XC175,
Thanks for the offer Bill, I'll keep you in mind. I saw something posted by Husky37 in his restoration thread which may work for the YZ forks also. He used 00-02 KTM triple clamps which have a 54mm upper clamping diameter/ 57mm lower clamping diameter, and they are the right stem length and bearing diameter for the Husky frame neck. My YZ upper fork tubes are about 54 and 58 mm, and I am thinking I may be able to hone or bore out the KTM lower clamp from 57mm to 58mm to accept the YZ forks.

    Hi Gary,

If you already have clamps to fit your YZ forks you may want to think about getting a Stem machined to the right length and dia to take stock Husky bearings. I'm not sure there's enough meat to take out a mil of material without it introducing a weak point..... just a thought. Some of the other guys might be able to comment on that.

If you want I can measure the clamp and let you know so you can make a decision on which way to go before you spend any money?

    Stu,
I've thought about going the custom-made stem route as well, but your post on the use of KTM clamps
on your project got me thinking in this direction.
In a few days, when all this YZ stuff I've bought starts to arrive, I can do some actual measurements. So far, I have a fairly minimal investment ($30) in YZ triple clamp parts and forks ($80) for my conversion experiment.
The KTM clamps I've seen in various pictures look beefy enough to be opened up another 1-1.5 mm.
That would be great to get your clamp diameter measurements for comparison with the Yamaha parts.

1983XC175, Thank you very much for the offer Bill.
I will get in touch with you when I get all the KTM/YZ/Husky dimensions. This plan may come together after all.

Thanks for all of your help and advice, Rick, Bill, & Stu!

    Hi Gary,

I measured up the lower clamp today and have attached a drawing showing the points where I measured...

A= 5.5mm (same as top 'lip')
    B= 8.5mm (at it's thickest - but that doesn't include the rib)

If your Yam legs are 58s then 1mm on the dia may not be a problem as it would bring the wall thickness down to 5mm and 8mm.

Just one note if you go down the KTM route before you buy the clamps make sure they give you a measurement from the top face of the bottom clamp to the bottom face of the top clamp when in situ then check that against your head stock. You'll soon know if the stem is then too long....

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Stu,
Thanks so much for measuring your KTM clamps. It looks like they should be thick enough to handle an increase from 57mm dia. to 58(or possibly 59) mm to accept the YZ forks. I'll be posting up some data and results when I get all my parts together.
I sure appreciate the assistance and advice. This forum and its members are truly an international brotherhood.

Awesome slightly older thread here. I love the different ideas and not giving up attitude. Those machined triples look fantastic. I am very impressed with the mid 90's zuk RM conventional forks. What a gorgeous looking conventional setup. As I gather parts for my 500XC project, I've started giving thoughts to non oe parts selection options that might exist on the suspension. Glad I spotted this.
