Am I the 1st to break the IMS tank?

If I was clever with aluminum and a good tig welder, I'd be damn tempted to build a decent looking, prototype 3+ gallon alloy tank for '08~ EFI Huskys that would accept the stock Husky shrouds etc and mount up correctly to stock mounting points. Not sure about the steering damper can-o-worms (don't use one). But sadly my metal working skills ended in hi-school ag shop in '74 with a O/A outfit, arc welder and cutting torch

Now if anyone here has the means and would like to take on such a project - providing the end product met the above specs - I'd be willing to pay $$$ for it. I think a lot of us would. Economy of scale, that sort of thing... Let's say 20 tanks at $400+/- ea or ??? I'd be open for that.

This larger capacity '08~ Husky TE IMS/Clarke/Husky Products/Acerbis gas tank goat rodeo is :rant: And I just got here (TE's) BUT - larger capacity tanks for other bikes I've owned have been problematic also

Damage Assessment! Let's see some pics...... Please I feel your pain 2nd ride and all, but I can't say it's IMS's fault either. I hate those trees that reached out and grabbed you then bitch slap you to the ground.

Too bad, you may be the first. But, I bet you won't be the last. Poor design in my opinion but there was a rush too get these into production. IMS has been known to smoke crack while producing tanks!! I had a oversize tank melt on my 2002 CR 125 and they wouldn't replace it either. Call Hall's to see if they can help you.

It would be nice if Husqvarna would already have a design from the factory when the bike is produced. That might solve some of the problem between IMS/Clarke etc.

How interested would you guys be in a alum tank, or better yet a better desinged IMS tank. A really close friend of mine owns a machine shop and a plastic molding shop. They make their own molds for everything they make and they also do jobs for Trucklite,a bunch of different medical companies, and about 30 other places I can't even remember. If enough people are interested,it would probably be something he would be interested in doing. He and I have already discussed about making aftermarket parts for the Husky's.

Naturally I'd be interested I favor aluminum, mostly because it can (easily) be repaired. But a good plastic design (with non-spinning threaded shroud inserts) that allows use of stock tank shrouds is okay too (see requirements in my previous post). Curious since you and your friend have discussed this - when you say "if enough people are interested" - how many people are you talking about? FWIW, I'd be happy to beta test a prototype

IMO, this is a total business opportunity if someone is so inclined. US and possibly overseas sales? Might be worth starting another thread

I did mention in an earlier post that I didn't think it was IMS's fault that I ran out of talent and broke the tank. I do, however, think the design could have been thought about a little better!

How many people/orders would be up to him to figure out based on what kind of a profit margin he needs. I myself,would also like a alum tank over a plastic but they are harder to make than a plastic tank and would cost half again as much. I will talk to him tonight and see what he has to say on the matter,if it is really something he wants to do I'll start another thread to see how many people would be interested.Thanks for the reply.

I have both a Clarke tank and a deficiency of talent and so the tank has been in some dodgy get-offs and to date it has survived well. I also have a Clarke and deficiency of talent while riding my XRL with the same result.

I would not hesitate to buy another Clarke.

I need to clarify that the tank did break, but I did hit a tree. I do not want anyone to take my post as a big negative remark towards IMS. They did a great job building the tank with the exception of the stabilizer issue. I don't think the wings can be avoided with this design. I just happened to hit just right. I also wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else or am I the only lucky one.

Do you think the stock tank would have been equally damaged from the impact?

I did talk to my friend last night again about making bike parts. He has to do some checking on the price of liability insurance for making/ selling gas tanks and would be making them out of alum instead of plastic because he doesn't have a blow mold press. So to do the plastic ones he would need a press($500,000+) and would have 35,000 to 45,000 $ in the mold itself. He not only wants to make tanks,but to be able to offer a whole line of different aftermarket parts for the bike. He did make some custom parts for Harley there for a while.

Depending on where it split, it could be a quality issue. Pics are required for assesment.

I’m hard on my equipment. In fact my friends all give me crap because my 08 TE450 already looks like it’s got 10 hard years on it. That said my IMS has taken a lot of abuse, both maxi-wings have scratches and gouges from being dumped in the rocks. So far (knock on wood) no breaks, cracks, leaks, busted seems, nada…

So far I guess I’ve been lucky – my number just isn’t up yet!
