Apparently! Could not turn down the price I was quoted. Guess it's only good if you can get the product.
Do we know for sure the bike is " going away " ? if so how do I get the full Leo Vince Ti in Canada, and do I need a JD power surge with it?
We don't know for certain, but several reputable sources seem to believe it is going away and some new thing is coming that is some kind of mix of BMW/Husky parts.
The 630 was not in the brochures and other collateral released for all the other 2012 models a few weeks ago.
http://www.motostrano.com/ --- Worldwide shipping. I would say absolutely get a Power Surge to go along with the Leo....
i dropped by InternationalMotorsports last weekend who sell a lot of Husky's. They confirmed the 630 being discontinued. Right now I'm scrambling to get all the genuine Husky parts now before it's too late.
Hall's has told me that OEM parts will be available for quite a while. It's the aftermarket that I'm concerned about.
There are laws in the USA that state a Dist must have parts available for at least 7yrs after a model is discontinued. I am not the least bit worried about getting parts for my personal 630.
I'm not worried about OEM parts. But, I will be bummed if I can't get a neat solution for carrying soft bags. And not a Giant Loop.
I'm trying to come-up with a reasonable guess as to why they would discontinue it.... I've got nothing. Anyone care to throw anything out there?
It probably has to do with the big Nuda coming out, and soft Super Moto/Motard sales. SM is wickedly popular overseas, but has a rather cult following here in the states. Similar reason why Zook decided to stop importing the DRZ SM. It's such a niche market. Too bad since these things are so much effin fun.
From the perspective of a big company seeking the best return on its capital... Not enough sales volume Too expensive to make -- ie, low gross margins. Re-positioning to use a motor (Rotax 650) that is cheaper to make, runs more efficiently and more readily meets emissions I think it's a tough segment. There is surely a market for plated dirt bikes now that USFS requires plates, and more states are moving in that direction for OHV areas. But -- the 630 is not a "plated dirt bike" -- the 250-400cc range is. And other brands have learned the same thing. So, it's not a plated dirt bike. Is it an adventure bike? Not really -- not big enough to weigh it down with gear and tools and whatnot. Sure, people do it. But the adventure bike market wants an 800 twin at the small end, and bigger from there. Something that is smooth at 80mph for ten hours a day. This bike segment has gotta be one of the smallest in the motorcycle industry. If BMW is going to commit capital to a lightweight dual sport/adventure bike/commuter...they have to find a way to make it at lower cost so they can retail them for comfortably under $9k. I think they can do it, and I'll think we'll see a TE650 not long from now. The motor is the biggest cost on the bike, and BMW has proved they can have the motor parts machined in Asia, then quality-checked and assembled in Europe. The next step is to assemble the motors in Asia. And yes, it can be done with extremely high quality. You can buy poor quality work in China, and you can buy world-class quality. I've toured some factories over there; it's just a matter of what you want to pay for. There are still sales to be taken from the guy that wants a KLR/DRZ-type bike, but has the extra cash to upgrade to a lighter, more powerful version.
I put the Leo Vince Ti system on my bike today. It sounds different than the FMF I had. Not louder or quieter, just different. This system is a work of art. You couldn't ask for a better built system. One thing I noticed when I took the old system off was that the wiring for the bike runs disturbingly close to the header pipes. It melted the black insulation and was pretty close to melting the insulation off the inner wiring and exposing the conductors. I went to the auto parts store and bought some shielding and wrapped it up.
It's a tad quieter than the FMF can. this is with just the spark arrestor insert installed. I didn't put the DB killer in there. The fit of the two inserts was so tight that I wasn't sure how hard it would be to remove the insert once I got it in there (I had to use a hammer to tap it in). So, thinking this was a one-time deal, I didn't experiment with the DB killer. If anyone has any insight on how to make the inserts easier to install, let me know. I'd like to try that DB killer and see how it rides. I took it for a quick spin around town just this morning and performance wise, I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between the FMF slipon and the Leo system. The Leo is very light, though! The Leo is a little bit longer. The FMF also hangs a little higher and tucked up into the tail more. It's closer to the tire when the suspension compresses than the Leo. Here's a pic for comparison.
Boy I'll say. Ryan took care of me as well. It will be two to three weeks before it arrives, but based on the savings, I'm OK with that.
I got mine from Bill. Of the 3 price quotes I got, his was the best. I didn't ask for Ryan at that number, though.
If anyone in Canada is looking for a LV Full System, I will have one in stock next week. The guys at LV called today to confirm that I still wanted the pipe I have on b/o. They only are getting 4 systems coming and have 21 on b/o from dealers so 17 guys are SOL.
