This bike seems very similar to the Terra. Built by Aprilla for Bmw. Their is one for sale near me any insight would be of value.
It is similar, but 7 years old. In my area X Challenges still go for $5k(ish). That's about what a used Terra or Strada can be had for. That said, I hear nothing but good things about the X Challenge and actually looked at them when I was bike shopping.
Might talk to Ogre_fl, http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/any-terra-riders-in-north-florida.35353/#post-340495
I've got one, it's a very nice DS. Light, good power, not as smooth as the Terra/Strada. The spenders are somewhat lacking for heavy off-road use but ok for down here with the sand roads and such. The rear has an air-shock, which a lot of guys replace with an ohlins or wilburs. A couple threads from ADV http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=524638 http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286274
X-Challenge is a fantastic platform for capable DS bike, preferred by many notable riders, like Walter Colebatch. He used his heavily-modified bike during 13k km extreme Siberia off-road experience (Sibirsky Extreme).
As a previous X-Challenge owner I find it funny when folks reference Colebatch as an example of how great the bike is. I do appreciate that you have noted "heavily-modified" I followed Colebatch’s stuff when I had mine and it actually convinced me to give up on the bike. He has replaced most of the bike (in my opinion it needed it) and spent thousands doing so. In the end it was the motor and base frame. I knew my allready overpriced bike needed thousands of dollars and lots of time thrown at it and I was not impressed with it enough to do so.
Have had multiple X Challenges and it is in the same category as far as being a limited model. Only made for 07 but a few squeaked out in 08 as Police bikes. I know of 2. Not great suspension but I feel better than most. Best shock for it off road is the airshock it comes with believe it or not. Ridden both with stock and Ohlins and the stock actually worked better. Again, My opinion. Not quite the power of the Husky but not shabby. I just sold mine yesterday but still have the G moto version (mottard). If the price is right, I would recommend it. I have seen them in the 3500 to 5500 range. Condition and mileage everything. Don't care much for the ABS version either......
Never tried one but always though they looked cool. Looks like with an aluminum frame and swingarm might be a good bit lighter than the TR? Just looked and listed at 317 pounds dry. Is that right? Much lighter than the TR.
At first I thought the air shock was OK, but mine would not hold pressure for more than 3-4 days. I tried to get BMW to replace it but they said that was normal. Along with the effect of temperature swings, puming it up got pretty tedious. I also grew to hate how it would unload, jacking up the rear. There was zero static sag when set for my weight. This was a real issue if you had to take a dab and were off balance a bit. As you would tip over trying to save it, the bike would literally try to push you over.
Well it's a good looking bike. I'd buy one if I could pick one up for a good price. With that being said you can't over look the value of the TR650's. If these Xchallenges are around the same in price, then a TR650 is the way to go.
The front frame is steel, the subframe, a bit fragile, and swingarm are aluminum. These things we 10k new, then BMW had 3k cash back on them. I bought a new one when they did that. They are lighter than a TR, true. I will say that i really liked them when i rode them but sold the one I had as I mentioned as I am thinking about getting a second TR to strip it down and lighten, upgrading suspension for a more off road version.
Thanks guys. The bike is selling for $6800 cdn. with 2000km and 2 sets of tires. My other option is getting a Strada that's all that's available around here and terraifing it .Problem is they want $9100 plus 15% tax for a bike with no support.
Am I thinking in the wrong direction here...? Why not buy a TE449 or 511? Same engine, good platform. Or.. a TC449 and make it street legal..if you want a more aggressive offroader of a dual sport?
If I was to buy an off road 4 stroke right now I would have a really had time choosing between the TC449 and 250/310 x-light. Good ride buddy has a TE310 I ride a lot and we switch off and he is torn thinking maybe he should have bought the 449/511. He said the same thing though, he wants the 310 motor in a 449 frame. (not me I love the 511 motor) I wish they had continued development and came out with a 350-400cc class bike on the 449 platform. A "WR400" based on the TC449 with about 15 pounds removed would be fantastic.
