Ya I was pretty bummed when I got my Terra at first. My old modded DR would eat it alive off the line. Got 3500km so far, once I dropped a tooth in the front, pulled the spark arrestors and the fuzzy crap out of the exhaust the bike livened up pretty good. 1st gear power wheelies with just a roll off the throttle, 2nd I need to bounce it and pull on the bars pretty hard to get it up, no clutch work needed though. Took some getting used to keeping a thumper at mid-high rpm. Was used to lugging my old bikes. Guess the Terra/Strada is a wanabe 2 stroke Saving for a power Commander now. Bought my bike in Halifax but they don't have the MOSS tool. I drove to Newfoundland this summer with it and checked out Fun and Fast in St john's, no MOSS either. Pretty sure that Husky North America gave the customers and the Husky dealers in Canada the dirty ol shaft.
thanks ogre they did set me up with a new bike and my dealer did a great job of testing the heck out of the engine before getting it to me. I love the ergonomics and the engine so far. there was a temptation to go back to what I knew re japanese bikes but just too much good stuff on this bike. over 300 miles and all good so far. deb
Third ride today and I realized that the throttle was annoying me. You have to give a quarter turn before anything starts to happen. I then remembered that all new bikes are like this and I hate it lol. Every bike I've had I adjusted the throttle cable so the response is instant as soon as you twist. After that the bike was much more enjoyable to ride. Part of the reason it felt weak to me is because I'm used to the instant response. Still a little weak down low but I like it much better. If you haven't done this, try it. So much nicer when starting off.
I have also been wondering if there is a quick turn throttle that will work on these. It goes pretty good, but it seems to take a lot of twisting to get there.
A longer throttle can be a good thing. Although the TR is so anemic below 4k it could just as well have a toggle switch that's off & on. I wasn't aware that there was an "adjustment" to change the throttle. Does the adjustment shorten the distance between off and 100%? I had a Chevy astro van back in the 80s...it had a very quick initial hit the first 10% or so of the throttle take up...seemed to give 80% right off idle....the first 1/2" or so of mashing the pedal....the rest of the play did little else. That gave a impression to a new driver that the van had lots of power....purely placebo....just an abrupt pedal that was likely to cause whiplash. . I like the throttle on the TR but I reckon I'm used to it ...mine does stay pinned a big part of the time though. My wrist are flexible...lol
I guess an eccentric on the grip side, or the throttle body side would give that behavior. From what I can tell, the throttle seems pretty linear (even if the power isn't)
I've ridden the bike on a couple of dirt roads and plan to ride more dirt when I have better tires and a skid plate. The throttle adjustment I'm talking about doesn't change the power delivery. Gas is fed to the engine as soon as you begin to twist the throttle instead of after 1/8-1/4 turn. The adjustment takes a minute. The adjuster is on the cable right by the grip, under the rubber boot. Pull the boot out of the way, loosen the jam nut and spin the piece that looks like a very long nut. Have the bike running as you do this and twist the throttle as you go and you will see how it works. If the idle goes up while you are turning the adjuster you have gone too far. Very simple! Rode with my g/f today and carrying a passenger is awesome on this bike. I don't even know she is there! Handling is great. I've got about 350km on now and I rolled up to 7000rpm a few times today. I can see the power is definitely up top and I'm anxious to get it completely broken in. First oil change in a few days. No more riding til after that.
Cheers for that NL! Much smoother through the gears now, simple adjustment. Without all the advice I've picked up here and over at Adv I'd still be stuck with a stock bike. Just waiting on the 15T front sprocket to arrive now.
hey trapper J used your method stuck the nozzle in the funnel and put on full force aware of ug reading and clicked off when full thanks no mess deb
Glad you tried it. It takes some faith/ guts the first time...but all smiles every time from the first time on. Easy peasy!
Best to keep an eye on how much fuel you have consumed before filling up though. I've had dozen or so pumps where the auto shut-off was not working. The 1st time I was barely paying attention and plenty of fuel overflowed before I realised. This is far more likely in remote areas but it has happened to me within the city on a nice new bowser too.
I broke down and removed the red plastic thingy from my tank this weekend. My fill up yesterday was the first where I didn't spray or splash fuel. It fills like a regular bike now and I can see whats going on. I also was able to squeeze a few extra tenths of a gallon in there as well.
Interesting. I have never had a problem with fuel spraying or splashing with the Terra. On the other hand, my wife has a 2008 F650GS with a similar red plastic insert in the petrol filler and I am unable to fill her bike without having fuel spray all over the seat and side cover, no matter how slowly I do it or how much care I take.
Makes me wonder if those with a problem are cheating themselves...don't try and be easy or just partially insert the nozzle...stick it all the way down...the fuel goes way down anyway so you won't gain much by cheating up. The nozzle end points toward the rear of the bike. I had a over enthused salesman show me the ropes the day I bought the TR..thought he was crazy explaining to me how to fill up the TR..he was spot on!
Once you remove the gas cap and the cover plate, you just unbolt the gas cap holder from the tank (4 bolts). The red thingy is sandwiched between the tank and the gas cap holder. Mine was a little stuck to the gas cap holder & gasket, but it simply pulled apart. After it was off, I just had to take a little care to be sure I had the gasket lined up right when I bolted the gas cap holder back on.
