• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Can we start a new forum for just Automatics?

Grouty, I have been thinking about this and I agree with what you say. I originally posted this subject about two years ago and since then have watched the automatic related posts and probably would not be enough interest to start a separate forum. The last thing I would want is to have the auto owners/riders get pushed aside. Keeping the autos posts with the rest of the vintage left kickers forum I think will also help the interest in the autos grow. I don't do FB so I don't know if there is a FB page for the Husky autos. I wonder how many automatic owners/riders there are here on Cafe Husky?

I'm an owner and have ridden a friend of mines prefly after a hare scramble and loved it!!! I have one of my own that I'm currently working on getting going again

I think the biggest barrier to auto popularity is parts scarcity. I would have several of them if I could get parts, but I have no interest in a bike I can not ride as much as I want. Having said that I like learning about them and I find the entire idea interesting since Husky's solution to an automatic transmission is so different to the CVT of the Rokon and modern ATVs.

I'd like to see husqvarna revamp, redesign the automatic tranny again. But maybe a manual shifting one.

I believe Kevin Hines raced one years ago and had no problems with it. My guru buddy told me if a new rider babied it with constant u p and down shifting it would hammer it self apart. It seemed to stay together if it was raced and beat on.

Terry Cunningham was the most well known use of the autos. You are correct though, autos are not good bikes for beginners, fast riders keep the clutches locked up reducing heat where beginners have the clutches slipping much more.

its called the recluse clutch and you can get a new auto now if you want one (with manual shifting!) recommended for big four strokes...

Yes they should be ridden either on the gas or on the brakes - they don't like having their clutches slipped. Because of the type of terrain that I usually ride my 430 is running 12-64 sprockets - yes you read correctly. That way my clutches lock up much more quickly (and closer ratios) and slippage is minimised. The top speed is down to about 65-70 mph but that is more than enough for me.

I have found a foundry that can cast me new 2nd and 3rd gear clutch shoes for a very reasonable price - it is just a matter of pulling the tranny out and getting samples to them to work with.

Well its been a while since I've posted on the forum......

2 weekends ago we had the annual Conondale Vinduro Sprint - the only vintage enduro race in Australia presently.....

I raced in EVO (twin shock, air cooled & drum brakes class) Open ie 500CC and picked up a third on the AE500, that in itself isn't noteworthy, but I was beaten by two other AE500's - yes that's right 3 x AE500's in the one place and all on the podium! Gotta love an automatic :)

Classic Dirt is coming up soon, there is talk of 5 of these monsters being present, will need to photograph them all together.

I would like to contact Grouty and talk about hard starting with my 420 Auto.
I believe the problem is weak spark at the slow kick speeds.
I have tried a Power Dynamo and Electrex Works ignition.

Simon.

I'm here Simon ......... either PM or start a new thread. There is a massive amount of knowledge on here. There are many of us that will help.
