!! Bulletproof- have been beating on mine for 8 years finally have it apart to replace 2nd gear.
The fbf done forks are average for sure, but I can ignore it.

No. I just like the 250 2 stroke for racing in 250 4 stroke class and would like to stay with Husky to support our local shop. The only way I would be interested in CR 250 is if it were a very low hour machine. I don't want a total rebuilder.
And of course it would get a Scalviniracing pipe!

The new WR250 is a turd. Great woods bike but not MX Unless you replace ignition, port cylinder, mill head, do suspension, 18" back wheel....... Add all that to price of bike and it still would not be competetive with a YZ or KTM and would have a small fortune in it. I have considered the 300 though. I motocrossed a 300 this weekend and with a pipe and suspension it would be great! It was my buddies brand new bike, I raced it in +40 and a young pro class rider blew up and he let him race it, bone stock, in the pro class and it ripped! Suspension killed him after that many laps but it was still cool to see the WR waxing 450 4 strokes!!!
My son took some laps on my buddies brand new 13 TC250 and really liked it a lot. He was fast on it too! that is probably where we are headed. arena cross 001.jpg arena cross 003.jpg Arena Cross 1st round CR125 pic.JPG

I didn't realize the 250's were that far off the mark. My 300 with proper jetting is very fast, and I am coming off a 08 kawi 450.

The 300and 250 are the same from my understanding only thing different is the bore and maybe compression ratios, these wr250 are not lacking anything in performance wise. I've not ridden one with the new ignition as mines a 09, it's a monster in terms of power once you get the right pipe on it(dep pipes) It will holeshot against bigger bikes just start in 3rd gear and you'll always make it to the first turn first.

I do miss my old CR 250 though. But it was not the beast my 09 WR is.

I think I was a little harsh on the "turd" comment. My bad. Open mouth, insert foot. They are both great bikes. I just wish Husky would bring back the 250 2 stroke MXer! With AMA rules the way they are now and guys going bankrupt trying to rebuild 4 strokes when they grenade, there is room for a red, white and black 250 2 stroke in the US market......I think? I see brand new YZ and KTM 250's at the track all the time. You cant beg, borrow or steal a KTM 250sx right now. Tells me they are selling. Hmmm?

    Hi

Has anyone had any experience with the 1996 CR 250 ? I have a good deal for one. I wan't to use it for mostly trail riding and some MX. Please help.

They really are. The 01-04 CR250 were FAST and slim but as Mark points out the fork kinda sucks. I am on my 4th 04 CR125 so i guess i really like that platform as well.

Suggest a simple fix for the forks on my '02? Later 45's would fit I guess, and they can be made to work acceptably

    Many. Too many.
I ended up with a really good setup from FBF, payed for it back in '01 before I went to Loretta's. I was really happy with it. I cloned the valveing to my '04 TC450 and then tweaked it a bit stiffer from there and it works pretty darn well. This is all in reference for MX use, all bets off for woods!

The 02 CR250 I had and rode 6 yrs in GPNF was scary fast in the woods (ESP with a 2C racing pipe) but did not want to turn well ... Forks were very stiff and even after 1 re-stack ... they were still too hard and maybe this was what was causing the turning to be so bad ... Shock was ok ... Buy a water pump seal and you have your back-up parts list completed for the bike ...

My current 08 WR250 turns great and the front forks are working well on the track and trail so far ... The rear spring is a little too stiff but I can manage with it but it probably needs re-stacking along with its spring ...I was a little afraid buying the bike due to bad turning (as with the 02 model) and was ecstatic after the first ride at how well it turned on a track ... Not like a 010 TC250 turning but the bike feels like it will top out my skill level before I top out the bike and ~carve any line I wanted on the track I was riding on... trails seems pretty good also and still testing there :)

Its been several yrs since I was on the 02 model, but I still remember that rocket ship, straight line acceleration ... The 08 is plenty fast but I guess that heavier FW slows it down enough to take some of the scare out of the bike and does allow a complete, single moment before the bike gets on the pipe and screams ... I have a CR ignition and will put it on the bike at a later date for comparison ... So far here, the WR ignition is plenty fast enough for me and my riders ...

One thing on these bikes is the pipe ... Crashes on the left side bend the pipe back against the engine and one of the water hoses ..,

    ---

My 08WR 250 has 45mm Marzocchis and they work well for me ... Not sure what has been changed on them though.... I just got on the bike and went riding and they were perfect ....

02 CR250 in GPNF ... I think this is the Cat Creek area ...
