You know who cares if they give you a different tank. It all takes time and is a pain. When you lay out that kind of money for a name brand product you expect it to work like it should. I would rather have a refund for the 2 IMS tanks that I have.
Hmmm - seems the tanks have synchronised clocks somewher along the line and they're all attacking together! They must be Deceptacons rather than Autobots! :-D I bought my bike second hand and the previous owner game me the IMS tank with it - he said he had used it once for a longer event, but for his regular trainign he preferred the smaller tank. FWIW he said it didn't leak when he had it on, so I took that at face value. Anyway, I fitted it this weekend and left it over night with a full tank. In the morning there was a smell of fuel and sure as nuts when I checked it there was a leak around the fuel pump insert *sigh* So from what i have read, even if there isn't a leak when you initially fit the tank, one inevitably develops as the engine/exhaust heat soften they plastic and it warps. So even if you do the trick of filing the mounting surface flat on the tank, it will probably eventually deform again. To combat this, has anyone tried to put a silicone sealant or soft rubber gasket between the tank and pump mount? Surely this will allow some deforming of the plastic without a leak developing?
Does seem to be affecting 4-stroke models because of the fuelpump alot more then 2 strokes. Still sucks either way
Yeah the ribs on the underside of my seat are trying to wear a hole through my tank as well. Here leaky leak.....
I took another crack at the tank yesterday. Once I took the pump put and inspected the the tank side mating surface it was noticeably warped. Why the hell didn't IMS put a more rigid mounting surface (aluminium or thicker less warp prone plastic)? Anyway, FYI, I put a nice layer of Permatex 2 Sealant (http://www.permatex.com/products/au.../auto_Permatex_Form-A-Gasket_No_2_Sealant.htm) and mated the pump back up. The product description says: I like the idea of it being non permanent and it being fuel resistant, so hope it will do the trick. I filled the tank, put the cap back on and clamped the breather hose so that pressure could build up, and left it to see how it would go. The tank experienced positive pressure in the sun, then vacuum pressure over night and didn't seem to leak from around the seal at all. So hopefully this will work in the longer term, but I think it's going to be worth checking regularly.
lads and lasses- IMS is sending me another tank. they were WAY more willing to work with me than expected. e-mail Jack or call Steve for assistance. i've had at least a dozen of their tanks and other stuff. yeh sometimes stuff aint exactly right and/but it's totaly doable with no mods. but this [Hus-9] tank is giving them heck due to the 3 mount points, its a tough mold to get right per them.... i just took mine off, flushed it well with soap and water, let it dry out overnight, taped up the holes, boxed it up and shipped it back. cost 10$ ground from torrance to riverside Ca. if it rubs bad somewhere call them for advice on how to heat and remold a spot. if it leaks call Steve, asap. if my new one hits the top clamp like the last one ill do a wright-up on re-molding that spot. they gave me really clear and concise instructions. i can live with the tight seat fit, i just modded the pan on my beater seat and have another fresh one in the box that goes on when i sell it. seat pans are easty to mod with a heat gun etc...that way ya dont loose any capacity.
....also- they are revising the mold for HUS-9. im waiting an xtra couple weeks for one of the new ones. if there's significant diff's i'll post up pics and such. gota say once i got their attention they were very happy to please. everyone has issues with products, no such thing as perfect & no company is immune. but, EXCELLENT service can make up for a product flaw in my book, any day. and that's what keeps me coming back. yeh its nice to have a nice thing, but, if the things comes with no service, whats the point. tip of the hat to IMS. two thumbs up.
good info... is the HUS-9 the same as the HUS-9C? the IMS on my WR144 has made the seat pretty difficult to get on some days. bigger arc in the rear of the seat the other day, puts a lot of pressure on the thumb screw, bums me out. my seat pan is already modded as well.
not sure...call em up! heat that seat pan with a gun and puuuuush w/ a 2x4 scrap. had to do that with my Honda's to get the seat on and the bolt holes to line up. seat 'll snap on and be a lot lower too since it aint bridging up anymore.
will do, thanks. yeah, the pan is ground down pretty good already but maybe some heat will fix it. i think the rear of the tank is a bit long and making contact in the mid section as the front is loose.
Mine has the same issue. The tank is too long/thick in the back and keeps the seat from going all the way forward. You would have to heat and mold the whole back of the tank to make the seat fit right.
yep its pretty tall and long in the back. but dont reform the tank is ya dont have too... heat the seat pan, then, push it in with the skinny part/edge of a 2x4 scrap et al. the tangs on the subframe can be shimmed with innertube to get a sungger fit in case ya wallered out the tang holes in the seat pan (like i did). also you can glue innertube shims on tank by the big screw for the front of the eat to get rid of razzes etc. i'll only remold a tank if it interfears with the steering or something vital i cant smooth over with innertube.
Enough already. If they made it right to start with and did more R and D we would not be having issues. I have 2 of these tanks 1 on my wr150 and one on the cr150. With the 2 stroke at least there is not a fuel pump problem, but fitment sucks and really good service only goes so far. I do need the extra fuel, but my god you could drive 200 miles to race and DNF because of a inferior product. You should not have to carry your stock tank to the races for fear of failure. IMS get it right or lose customers. I have had other IMS tanks and do not remember all this hoopla ! I do not want to have to heat a product remold and modify my seat. I paid good money for what I thought was a proven product. I'm very dissapointed but glad they are helping ev eryone. I have emailed them in the past when waiting for the tanks to come out and NEVER got a reply!! Whatever............
i mirror those emotions! but- who gets it right every time? no one. ive had aftermarket fittement issues on almost all my (40+) bikes, and not just from IMS. venting is gooood....that's why they have jack and steve. dood- email aint gonna cut it and trust me i went there. they are cottage industry like most things moto. CALL them, express your issues. dimes to donuts says they'll help. they helped me, why not YOU?
i think i made some good progress, i'll have to take pics to show you how my seat pan has been Dremeled. the last area to grind further was on the insides of the square openings for the frame tangs. the tank was interfering with the seat right there but some more grinding allowed me to smack the seat further up. now at least i don't need to bend the rear of the seat to mate it with the thumb screw opening. just took a little more studying while taking the seat on/off without the front pin in play. still lame to grind your pan so much but oh well. i'll ride with it for a bit and see where contact/rub marks appear then Dremel a little more.
Amen, that's why I bothered calling JGT for #3 a couple days ago. Doesn't cost me a dime now since there's a one year warranty. Just playing the odds screwing up something after having to swap the pump assy out so many times. Still haven't broken that elbow........ Also, where these (2010 x-lite EFI versions) are tending to leak is directly above the exhaust head pipe
ok boys....got my new tank in the box...pretty sure it's the new mold for carbed bikes...ill fitter up tonight and let ya know...stay tuned. steve sent it yestreday, got it today... edit- if my facts are correct i gathered there will be two new molds for "this" series, one for carbs and one for FI bikes....FI one is taking longer due to the new mold changes they are making. guess they are really sweating the details on the FI one so...give them a call and see if they can help if you have any issues boys. mucho thanks Steve-o!
Well, I put 4 hours on teh bike yesterday, and she got nice and hot in sections without any noticeable leaks (judging by the lack of a strong smell of fuel anyway). So I think the Permatex 2 Sealant may be a winner. Your milage may vary though. I'll keep you posted if a leak does develop.
Hopefully she holds for good! I've left my newest IMS up on the shelf for now. Just don't feel like playing with another possible leak with the bike mainly sitting in the garage this summer.
