Add on experience note we were dyno testing a custom Italian mini (65cc) MX bike*.
I noted a very enclosed carbon fibre airbox, with just small gaps to suck in air around the seat base.
Our HP numbers were coming in disappointingly low.
We used the same type (above) UNI plug in foam filters after drilling well placed holes into the sides of the airbox, we even minimized the amount of leg/boot blockage in our placement. We have the dyno readout somewhere and I forget the numbers but the gain was somewhere near 3hp at peak rpm ! from a teen HP machine the gain % was nutty like a 20% HP gain. More air in = more air out=more HP= higher fuel consumption (maybe not quite in that order), and yes we boosted the main jet quite a bit.

PS our rider- my friend's son did increase his lap times after we opened up the airbox, but him and his competitors keep those things pinned constantly. So if everyone is pinned and you're down 3HP the other guys will pull away from you all day long.

    * shout out to this guy PAX Racing, he is da-mang for minis!!!

Next time I do this I will put 5 of those little vents on the upper side were I drilled the holes instead of how these are done.

i like what you did there. I have a TC250, no screw on the side cover. I gets plenty of air from the top, I imagined creating slits corresponding with the center of the filter, what do you think?

The slits should work fine also.

That is not a screw in the panel. (I had heard that the side covers were coming off on Husaberg's. I believe the early ones had plastic pins instead of metal ones the Husky's come with). Anyway, it's a cam lock to make sure it doesn't come off.

Track got rained out yesterday. Looks like much needed rain in the forecast for this week-end. Might be another week before I get to try the mod out.

I often wondered why they never pressurized the air box using a small muffin fan. It's 12volts and can operate off the lighting voltage. Most fans run on mili amps. It may sound crazy but why not?

I believe the Suzuki hayabusa uses the charged air box setup.

The holes really helped on the top end. Lots more overrev. It was a noticeable difference.

Just wondering if anyone has experimented with this on the TE300? Any more feedback?

The could install a mini muffin fan and use a variable coil to adjust the speed of the fan to the rpm from the throttle position sensor. the air box needs flappers for intake and exhaust in the air box if the fan can't keep up or is too much.

I've been looking at these vents http://www.frogzskin.com they look nice and could maybe last awhile?

I plan to do a little riding with the side panel on then try with it off and if I can tell a difference I'll probably throw a few holes in it....

A small fan would do nothing to help air flow. It would have to be a turbo charger to brake even with the cubic feet per minute of air that a two stroke moves.

Here is a hilarious example of leaf blowers being used for charge air in a chevy monza.

How does the Suzuki hayabusa do it? It's air box is supposed to be charged?

I think a charged air box would excell the four stroke dirt bike technology even further.

Dont they have intake ducts on the fairing so the faster you go the more air gets rammed down the carbs?

I wouldn't Drill holes in anything man, There is more then plenty of room for your bike to breathe. If you did that, You would gunk up your filter more. Just make sure you keep it clean before every ride!

Back to this topic, I decided to give it a shot , no photos yet but I hole sawed 3 large holes into the top most forward spot on my left side cover, I think this will be enough, no need to go MXA crazy. Then I added some large mesh open screen and epoxied the screen on, just to keep out squirrels and possums..
At least for a test, if it comes on too MX like I will simply throw on another OEM cover no worries. What I want to feel is even more torque so I can ride even more 2nd and 3rd gear in the trails smoothly and unloaded. I thought about using the UNI "buttons" but decided to go full open. If I find its needed we can easily buy UNI foam sheet and install itto add some dust filtration. Go look at the mid nineties TE610s of Eriksson and Tainen those things were holed and screened like crazy I counted up to 9 holes in those and those holes were low on the side. These 3 holes almost face down on the side cover and are a direct shot to the filter.
Mine are bigger and 3 in row from front to rear on the upper forward almost horizontal section (where they drilled 2 holes) and at least I cleaned up mine with an x-acto blade.
