While my bike is in bits i improved the air flow but without the holes
I opened up the side cover by double and still looks stock
Doubled the holes in the grab rails
Then shaved a bit off the ribs to allow for the increased flow

I don't have a problem with the power but these mods may help with more Air and bike still looks stock. pic 1.jpg pic 2.jpg pic 3.jpg pic 4.jpg

here is the proof in pudding.....this is the CRM CF subframe you can really see just how open the architecture is for maximum air flow

so they are already holing the all new plastic on the 2016 FC. Again probably with the CF subframe the airflow is just fine, but heck maybe the factory teams will do the holy roller mod.

Ah I did not know that was Zach Osborne's machine. Interesting. But telling. Does AMA production rule allow them to use the more breath-rite CF subframe?

Hey guys... doesn't this get more dirt in the airbox ?

I would imagine the intake was under the seat because thats the most unlikely place for water, mud and dirt to get to..

run through a creek and the splashes alone would likely get water in there.. a layover in a small creek would flood the air box in an instant where as the stock under the seat design, the bike would have to be completely submerged to allow water in the airbox..

even enduro guys have done these mods for years. for trail riders that are normal guy speeds perhaps an open airbox is not advisable for deep water crossings...but if you go through even deep water a decent speed the water is pushed away anyway.
I needed to say that because I keep hearing that water intrusion issue about the holey airbox mods.
If you look at all the past masters of enduro especially the big huskys of Tiainen and Eriksson they were all opened up/ extremely opened.
Ive seen Anders bike completely covered in mud and water with him winning the class, so the combination of solid forward motion (speedy) as well as the oiled foam filter keeps things working under conditions that we think will cause a shutdown.
Heck if you fall over in a river only a schnorkl pointing up will save you anyway holes or no holes.
PS I also know that those guys have full engine service all the time. PPS a little water through the filter is not going hurt your engine.

The last rainy hcam viddy we made I looked at my filter there was some water droplets on the filter from my 3 top section holes but the oil kind of held it in place, no sponge effect on the well oiled filter. Incidently those 3 top section holes are just about the same height as other airbox openings on my bike anyway.

If you could buy a side cover that was vented attractively (ie not a bunch of holes bored into it to interrupt your graphics) and relatively waterproof, would you?

    Jon,
You forgot about mentioning the cost of said side cover? I bought a pair of OEM factory blue Husaberg side panels for $17.00. a piece. I haven't used them yet. Mine are still holding out. Boring a few holes in the left panel and adding some screen and silicone takes only a few minutes. A basic deburring tool costs about $8.00. and a few more minutes to use. A file is less.
What do you have in mind?
I have a full set of Acerbis black Plastics too for my '15 FE501. Under $120.00 shipped.
