I did something similar... 8 years ago I tore an ACL on my right knee and had a reconstruction using part of my own patella tendon as the new ACL donor material. They also take a small piece of patella bone, to anchor the donor in. I slipped in the snow 6 weeks after surgery ( I had rehabbed well and was ready to go back to work in a few days at that point) and hyper flexed my knee. It broke my kneecap into 4 pieces, but luckily no damage to the tendon or the new ACL. I was out of work for another 10 weeks, it sucked!
Ugly story you got there ...That knee cap must be more fragile than I was aware of ... And I had no idea a knee cap injury has such a long healing heal ... I am planning on obtaining some new knee and elbow pads in the near future ...
I ruptured my right quadriceps tendon back in 2012 and 18 months and 3 trips to the ER later I am almost back to normal. It is one of the nastiest injuries out there. Anything to do with the Patella or the 2 tendons that attach to the patella and you will be gimpy for at least a year. Fact is, most athletes never fully recover once your Quad tendon ruptures because it is impossible to get the tendon to heal back to the Patella as good as GOD created it. ACL injuries and recoveries are a breeze by comparison. Not trying to bum out you all here but I have first hand experience with the injury and the rehab process.
