It is all personal preference, but I find I the yz brake is still one finger with our brembo master cylinder. The yz wheel is so much lighter then our BMW wheel. Five pounds is a huge amount of rotating mass. I have the 2003 YZ450F stock setup. Stock springs and valving. The only real problem is now the stock rear shock feels bad now. I am working with Dave for work on the rear shock. Even if the only option is a rebuild/revalve of the rear shock.
Hmmm, I'm still on the fence on the braking side of things. I have some reservations as to wether it will stand up to hard braking for road use. If only in reference to my particular style of heavy braking on the twisties of Ca hwy 1, which happens with quite regular frequency. Something that may not be such an issue for yourself, i notice you're located close to Joshua Tree and Mojave. I've considered the larger rotor offering for the yam wheel setup. Which then implicates a different hanger. I certainly like the weight savings for reasons stated. But also considering a 19" hoop, albeit down the road. Appreciate the input, as i mull things over here!
Yes, Joshua Tree is one of my play grounds. I am running the Honda brake pads. I was looking at the bigger rotors but so far it has not been needed for me. But, I havent loaded the bike for a trip yet. The forks have made a huge improvement in the ride. It's sad they didn't use a higher quality of fork and shock. Betas use Sachs stuff that are better quality being fully adjustable, better componets.
Stock suspension definitely a weak link, but this looks like a good starting point to move forward. Did you go the route of reeming out the lower yoke? If so curious what you paid? Is the donor wheel same size as oem 1.85?
Yeah agreed rear shock is now noticeably super bad, Im still looking at a complete replacement with something exotic. If my yz wheel and disc were in better shape Id probably keep it, Im not really that keen on the axle being a little short either.Ive found someone who can make up an axle pretty reasonably and the caliper hanger isnt that pricey.
Fantastic, Baddrapp! I have to go ahead with this right away as I plan on loaning my WRR to a friend this summer for a re-do of the TAT while I will run my Terra. Gotta get it fixed up.
Any of you guys selling the stock front forks/triples? My dad has a Serteo and I think the Terra forks would be just fine for him.
The Sachs forks are not suited to the Sertao, they are too short and the yokes are too large which will cause steering lock problems, the ignition switch mounting will also cause problems and that is just the start of the difficulties. All up not a good option for the Sertao.
Ha thought no body was interested anymore, caliper hanger fitted perfectly. The custom axle wasnt cheap but its a work of art and the big brembo pulls the terra up quick smart.
Always interested Squire. Did you have to caliper hanger at all to put the wheel in the middle of the forks? If yes, how much? I have an ADVRider inmate inquiring about parts who is looking to do exactly what you just did.
Hey Rickyme, I'm doing the same conversion on my Terra, so far I have the forks and are going to rebuild them. A couple of questions if I can... Who did you get to make the custom axle so we can use the stock wheel? What did you do to the Yamaha forks, new springs (what spring rate?) gold valves? reduced travel? Thanks, Michael.
Hey Mike a guy in Sydney called greg ball he's an engineer who does marine and motorcycle work I asked him if he kept drawings because I knew others would want same but he didnt. Give him a call though, I could drop my bike over if wanted to copy mine as hes close to home.Phone (02) 9521 8470 Yeah new springs in forks, Christian at Trooper Luis Garage in Morebank did them it cost about 600 for springs, service, valving and spacers for 250mm travel but spot on first time
Thanks for the info Ricky. I'm getting excited about this conversion, I think it should transform an already good bike. I'll keep you posted as things progress.
