Why on earth would anyone want 2 mufflers on a single? More weight for NO advantage????? The pipe length should be whatever the calculated length is, dependant primarily on exhaust cam duration and timing. I haven't been able to find the duration in anywhere and have been too caught up to degree wheel it yet. That will almost certainly dictatew which side it should end up on. For the Strada I would actually like a whole low pipe and muffler.
Looks is personal taste, but flow should be no better with two than one and on a properly designed system. Two stuffs up the power harmonics especially on the TR with two different length pipes, and MUST be heavier. The only bikes that need more than one muffler are crossplane cranks and V's.The Std mufflers have massive restriction but as has been pointed out elsewhere, it has been found that at certain revs/load the Husky injector is at 100% duty cycle, so more open flow would be counter productive Personally I like one muffler on the Strada looks wise and it leaves a place for carrying more gear. Just dropped my link pipe off to get a custom made single pipe for my 900g Tyga carbon muffler. The Tyga has a restrictor that I made at both end to make it flow a tiny bit better than the standard and is reasonable quiet ( ish). If the Strada had a single low pipe the panniers could be 250mm narrower overall as well.
Also note that at these large rpm's and throttle openings....the PCV is reducing the injector duty cycle by as much as 7-9% for optimal power output. In stock form the TR is running a bit rich in these instances
Your points makes sense yet some companies find they are better and many SMR guys run them for performance reasons. Also in theory two smaller mufflers could improve CG which seems to be important these days.
Just to clarify, GPR is going to offer both a single and dual exhaust, a head pipe for the single exhaust option and also looking into coming up with a tube type container in lieu of the second muffler, (a great opportunity to create a fuel cell if you ask me). Grazie ancora per le informazioni Mega! Thanks again Mega for the update Mega!
Sweet. That confirms my thoughts. Keep the throttle under 20% open, or have it be at least 50% open - and it operates better.
One more week of patience and I will tell you 'everything permanently. The bike we agree that I am going to withdraw by August 9. then, by that time you will know for sure what they did in GPR.
As always, want to thank you on behalf of all of us over here for you help. We are all anxiously waiting and hoping that there will finally be an exhaust available for the 650!!
Grazie Toyboy, for the info on the pipes . A single one would be fantastic. I would like a low pipe for the Strada ( like the KTM Duke) but I fear that won't happen.
The photo that motosportz shows a sensible reason to use 2 mufflers ( even though it would stuff the harmonics). The Dirt bike has 2 SMALL mufflers. This would allow the mufflers to be positioned furthur forward ( not how far forward they terminate) and overall outboard width would actually be less a than a larger diameter single muffler both of which are important on a serious dirt bike. Add to that that harmonics are most important at long duration wide throttle openings which competitive dirt bikes don't usually engage in . Throttle openings in the dirt tend to be continually varied over a wide range ( although approaching wide open far more than most tarmac bikes) so the importance of raw HP from top end harmonics is less effected by the wave disruption of the two gas channels. Actually there is a way to remove the effect of a split pipe. Have the exhaust header dump into a chamber at tuned length, then use the two pipes as non harmonic bleeds. Sorry I should have thought of it earlier.
Hopefully One more week to go!!! Their site says 55 - 100 BPS for shipping...thats about $80 -$160 USD
HAHAHAHAHA... welcome to "Living on the other side of the world". In Australia, ordering from sites in Europe or USA we routinely get this kind of shipping charge pop up on online quotes. I was among the first who ordered the crashbars from Altrider. When I ordered, the shipping was USPS, and was about $US40, which is reasonable compared to some charges. If I look at the Altrider site now, the shipping has changed from USPS to courier and shipping to my address it's $212. Fortunately, there is a local distributor in Australia for the Altrider stuff who will ship them for about the same total cost I paid to get mine from Seattle. I don't know if the $212 is the actual shipping cost, or whether they just put that in to discourage Australians from bypassing the local distributor.
I reckon that's the reason for the inflated shipping cost on this particular item. At least Ned Kelly had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed people...
That is good. For the record I sell items, and have shipped many things around the world. Shipping anything that weighs 4 pounds or more to Australia,, or anything large or odd sized, is obscenely expensive.
