There are all kinds of 'not exactly legal' things you can get away with for years on bikes. Hell, we have to plate dirtbikes in AZ because CA won't license them. Sometimes a LEO will catch them if you get stopped, sometimes not. But if they have you pulled over for anything, chances are likely they're gonna find something to nick you for. Dot tires, lights, fenders, next they'll be popping people for tampering with emission controls.
Yet another reason to love living in the South East. Cops here are more likely to pull you to compliment your bike or ask you where you bought it.
Not to mention I've got a CCW on me 90% of the time, even on the bike, which has actually gotten me out of a ticket or two... In CA I would be in the slammer and my bike/car impounded, my dog shot, and my mailbox run over...
I'm packin' 90% of the time too! I seriously think I'd kill myself or at least puke my guts out (several times) if I found out I had to move to Kalifornia.
Got stopped in the Big Bear Mtns. California by the CHP after airing out the cylinder for several miles, and got the the same run around, (he didn't get a clock on me) so he couldn't get me for speeding. License plate, blinkers, and I was uncorked. After a polite discussion about DOT and non DOT components, including the non DOT knobbies. He said " I'm not going to screw up your day, have a good safe ride, the weather is great today". So sometimes it may not be all the bikes fault......
California and smog..?? I have been riding BMW street bikes for years, but bought 3 TE Huskys for dirt fun as I did years ago, but they all stall at times just as I read about, unless you put a power up kit in and man they crank, except they are to be adjusted on the Ibeat software from Huasky, but the deaklers do not want to touch them. Fear of being fined......Why do they sell a bike that will stall with a care behind you?..........And you do not know this till they sell it to you...It falls on Husky/BMW?????????????????????????????? Not right...design the engine for use in CA, quit trying to save a buck.......
Can't be done...that's why they are no more. Look for the rotax lump in the next model, will be a TE650. BTW, it doesn't stall with the PU kit installed. That's they way we like it. Mine has not been re-tuned in iBeat, runs great.
I use to buy a fender elim for every bike I had.. The last 2 bikes.. I just dont care.. I say keep it legal.. its just an excuse to get pulled over.. then cops may look into other things..
Held up fine. As did the whole bike. 25 other ADV riders were there on different rides and many of them had things falling off their bike, skids, fenders, lights, etc. Bailing wire, lost parts, broken stuff, you name it. The Husky?? Nada!! Washboard virtually does not exist for this bike, you can't feel it at any speed. I was really impressed.
I went ahead and put it back to nearly stock. There are no red reflectors, except for the button style ones that double as license plate bolts. Other than that, it's back to OEM. It doesn't look that bad. I just hope it clears the tire at full compression.
I've got the stock plate bracket and I can guarantee you I've bottomed out the suspension a few times without the bracket being ripped off..so far at least. I'm not a fan of the location however and may attempt an alternative this winter when I have more time to dedicate to the bike.
The G650GS is an engine assembled in China/ the 800s are Kimco , but they run great. The power up kits rock, put one in the TE and wow!, but that is changing emmissions? Put it in the 250and still stalls, rocks over 3,000 rpm. that is almost $4,000.00 in power up kits? Still love the bikes?
My power up kit was $42. I would only care about emissions if there was mandatory testing. Motorcycle pollution doesn't even add up to a tiny fraction of the other sources.
Just in case anyone is still interested in the whole plate fender thing I'm throwin out a cople of pics of mine with a Baja Designs LED fender. The plate is a bit horizontal but not to bad.
Here's my tail tidy efforts: Dremel of the end and sand down, drill holes for number plate and added LED number plate screws.
The G650GS thumper engine is assembled in Taiwan by Kymco to BMW specs using BMW parts. The 800 twins are assembled in Berlin at BMW's plant. Both engines were designed by Rotax.
