I almost did, but then I realised there was no need as you're always going to notice soon enough one way or another. "Let me see, half a mile to the next waypoint then... OUCH!"
Quote from the "Top Gear" TV motoring show (IIRC about Geri Halliwell): "The trouble with my sister is that when she's at the wheel, driving is about number 5 or 6 on her list of things to do."
Re: SPOT The wife and I went into Yosemite last week and stopped at Tuolumne Meadows. At the information center there were 4 reports of 911 Search and Rescue responding to SPOT calls and aiding injured or sick hikers. Pretty sure this was just out of the Tuolumne area. I plan on taking mine with me more often on any trip...no real downside to that.
After an "incident" last year I always have a GPS on me now. Not a dash mount as it would be stripped off in the first mile of brush. I place my 60 Csx in a small camera pouch attached to the shoulder strap of my hydration pack near my left collar bone. It's always on when I'm riding and with pre-loaded maps I always know where I am now.
Yes. If you have the City Navigator software (about $100). I have a 60CSX. Love it! I take it when I travel, ride or go boating. I toss it in my backpack when I ride and it's never lost a signal. Even in the deepest, most tree covered valleys. It's a great do-it-all unit if you have the software.
Plus one on getting the software. I also have Maptech Terrain navigator which allows imports into USFS 3D environment. Plus with iPhone and GPS software I can now take a photo with embedded GPS info. Ain't technology grand! ;-)
Plus another one for City Navigator, European Metroguide, and World Map for those far flung places the base map doesn't cover very well (e.g. the USA if you have a European base map!). Now the iPhone has a compass as well as GPS, does it also record which direction you were looking when you took the photo?
Bearing, altitude, date and time...plus with the app I use I can push to facebook and 5 email addresses with a push of a button. Receiving party gets an email with link to google map with pic etc like this. Image GPS data doesn't all show in email but looking at my phone the image linked below had a bearing of 058 Hello, Lueders uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone 3G and is sharing with you the following waypoint: Name: Photo 003 Date: Aug 14, 2009 12:54 pm Location: Latitude: 40.467693º N Longitude: 118.295460º W Altitude: 4,110 ft Click on this link to display the waypoint in Google Maps. This link will be valid until Sep 18, 2009 5:56 PM PDT. If you are viewing this message on your iPhone or iPod touch, use this link to view the waypoint in the Maps application. There are three files attached to this email: "Photo 003.kmz" is a Google KMZ waypoint that can be displayed in Google Earth or Google Maps. "Photo 003.gpx" is an Open Standard waypoint that can be displayed by select mapping software. "Photo 003.jpg" is a picture attached to the waypoint by Lueders. You can take pic with GPS label and send once you get back in cell range...the above was resent as I typed this...cool stuff!
I'm trying to post a ride I did with my Garmin GPSMAP 276C then down loading the information to Google Earth. I can e-mail it to whom every and that works great (Thanx Troy). But I can't post the file. The file extension is (kmz.) recognized by Google Earth but C/H does not recognize it. I've tried zip,rar copy past...etc. doesn't work. Does anyone else have any ideas? I could send it to you and see if you can post it....PM me your e-mail and I'll send it your way Thx. Here are a couple pics from Google Earth but you can zoom in.
I bought the DeLorme PN 20 from Walmart for $150. It is a great deal at the price, imo, as you can dl all kinds of maps from them and put them in the gps. Quads, nautical, aerial, sat. maps, etc. I have a RAM mount for it and it works great for me.
Ummm, wouldn't that be a question for me? I've got no idea how big your file is, if it is not too big rename it to filename.kmz.pdf - then the software will think it is a pdf... or try some other extension.
Just a little update..on the GPS situation..... When I received my Lowrance unit...I had no idea how to use it... even the terminology was " Greek " to me....I almost took it back for eg...I just had a big white screen...and no image....just elevation readout and clock...big deal.... then I figured out the screen zooms in or out....now I see railway pipelines fuel stops food stops...WOW.... Now I can mark a trail.....take all kinds of detours.....and find my way back exactly....also on the compass is a big green arrow which you keep pointed to your heading(dark arrow).....if you want to take a different route and still stay on track... 250 bucks and well worth it.... I havent loaded any maps yet but.....I will soon....
Ok I've changed the file name from "kmz" to "pdf" and it looks like I can down load it to CH. Now I just have to see if once down loaded it will change back to a kmz and take you to "Google Earth" Cool it works, just right click on the file an open with Google Earth. It loads GE and take you right to the ride I did last year.
ummmm I meant rename it to filename.kmz.pdf, not filename.pdf... In any event I enabled the kmz extension for up to 50kb, let me know if that now works for you.
Yes it works fine. But you do need to have Google Earth installed to see it. Google Earth, if you do make sure you un-check "Include Google Chrome, a new web browser for Windows" Or it will change you start page and browser.
