Nope. Tore my Achilles and messed up my ankle 3 years ago by casing a double at an arena-x track. Seems everytime I get hurt it is on jumps. I learned a lesson about buying cheap boots and then paying three times in co-pays what a high end pair of boots cost. (Edit: Added how.)
No leg injuries...been racing for 20+ years...but I have broke my humorus(not funny), wrist twice, plenty of ribs but my style is kinda easy on the legs....
No, August 2008 knee cap (Patella dislocation). I know some guys who never get hurt badly and others who get hurt every year. One racing friend has broke his leg, femur (landed on at a Hangtown practice day) and arm over the past four years. And still makes almost all of the races. Its just luck I guess....or lack of
I've been riding almost 25 years. The injuries didn't start til about 6 years into it, which is kind of odd. You'd think the injuries would have come during the steepest part of the learning curve Torn MCL/ACL/reconstruction in both knees, 2 broken ankles requiring 2 surgeries, 2 broken feet and a torn groin muscle. All those injuries came while wearing top-of-the-line boots. Do you want to hear about the above-the-waist injuries, too? BrokenChick
Yes, females have those, too Torn groin muscle - accompanied a head injury and torn rotator cuff from hitting an unseen rock with my footpeg and getting launched. I was unconscious til another rider came upon me. Broken ankle #1 - low-siding on a dirt road trying to make up time in an enduro. Broken ankle #2 - landing off water bars at the Big Boot Ride, got 2 plates and 13 screws. Broken foot #1 - augering Eric's brand spankin' new 1997 Honda CR250 off a jump in a beautiful scrub gone bad. Broke the footpeg, footpeg mount and bent that huge single radiator, too. Broken foot #2 - smashing my foot between a granite boulder and my footpeg. Torn ACL #1 - being stupid on my brand new 1997 CR125. I honestly don't know what went wrong Torn ACL #2 - putting my foot down at about 5mph out in Utah. I didn't even fall over WoodsChick
Leg injuries at slow speeds are some what common. Guy last year broke his leg at the Bay National last year, cornering maybe 5mph and leg just snapped...Ouch! Anyway, do you feel those injuries in the cold weather?
Haven't broken any bones since 1980 and I am hoping to keep it that way. The snapped femur and hip fractured in three places in 1975 was enough.
Yes, I do. The ones that are the worst are the ones that had metal in them (ankle and wrist) but the knees hurt, too, when it's damp out. Every single ache and pain I have has been worth it many times over. I forgot to add the broken knee cap but that happened on my GSXR so I don't think it counts WoodsChick
The last 5 years yes, (thanks for jinxing me). In the past though have broke both ankles, several toes, fractured femur, right knee cap, and most of the bones in my right foot arch landing on a Honda doing mx. All of the injuries were on a MX track except for the toes. I also broke my Collarbone in MX but rebroke it twice riding the LMS courses and tore rotator cup.
Started riding 5 years ago and have had no injuries. I have only crashed twice. I just hardly ever push it past 80% speed so it keeps me safe. I also prefer the most technical trails becasue I would rather crash at slow speeds. Before this I did "extreme" mountain biking which kind of got all the crazy out of me. I switched to dirt bikes to stop all the bicycle injuries and so far so good. I did break my feet last year but that was driving home from a ride.
Thanks for the replies. I am having some trouble with my feet getting ripped off of the footpegs while riding some of the singletrack ruts - made me think about the legs a little...
my brother broke his femur going about 5 mph and his hip about a 1/4 mile away fom that 10 yrs later....so speed really doesnt matter
5 years!? I wish! I have minor to moderate injuries yearly and a real bad one every 3yrs or so. Dirt bikes, like snowboarding, have caused me more upper body injuries than lower body injuries. My lower half has been relatively lucky. Torn MCL in 2004 and a broken fib in 2010. Those were the only lower body injuries that required medical attention. The real title of this thread should read as 'Why do we keep crawling back to a sport that continually kicks our ass?'
Ride more carefully. I've been riding 10 years, normally 300-400 hrs/year. I've only had 1 leg injury, the result of a head-on where I was riding along with my girlfriend and another rider was going irresponsibly fast around a blind corner.
I have raced off and on for over 35 years. The last "on" session has been about 7 years. I've been lucky with legs and only just recently hyper extended a knee. I'm a woods racer and try my best to keep the feet on the pegs. I don't like to stick my legs out, but sometimes you just have too. I broke down and bought a set of Astericks after that. I'm old and seems like I always have a nagging injury or two, that takes at least six months to heal. It's hell to get old.
