I heard trailtech is working on a gps version of a vapor type computer in the 2-3 hundred dinero range complete with bike and outside temps, maps etc for next summer release. Anyone heard anything else along these lines? Would be way way cool
Yep. Buddy of mine might demo one for them for the Baja 1k as TT is sponsoring them. Going there tonight to get his stuff, so might have it later.
Yep, seen it, held it and using it soon. Very cool product. We will have them when available. Very cool features and they will have a trail upload sight as well. Pretty cool stuff. No background maps but trail maps and other very nice features. Has an all new-tech screen that looks awesome in direct light.
Almost time to upgrade to a new GPS. Sounds like a winner. The trouble I'm having lately. When I want to read mine, I have to stop and put on my cheaters.
wow - way too cool. I will be one of the first to buy. I love my garmin but can simply never get it right. If I put it in a pocket out of the way then it defeats the purpose. If its out Its in danger of debris. But this...oh man I was gonna buy a vapor for my wr300 but will hold off now till this comes out.
My son has a wrist device that tracks his Heart rate as he runs and uploads a ton of data to a web site automatically for review including the entire route, the mileage, speed changes, elevation changes, and plots all this on a yahoo map ... If this device does something like this, it will be very very cool ... Would the gps stuff be like an added screen to the current vapor?
This is awesome. Hopefully and since it is "- Designed Specifically to Meet the Needs of Off-Road Riders" it will have a resetable and adjustable trip meter that still works off magnet and sensor at the wheel. Unlike the old vapor, but like the Vector's trip meter. So I can use this to set up roll charts and follow roll charts and make corrections- while also beingable to collect tracks that work (hopefully) with the masses and their Garmens.
So you won't be able to see roads or USFS roads and trails until you make them or someone else makes the tracks. That would be fine unless you are someone who's scoutting and finds connections of old unused USFS "roads".
The first phase will not have them (I don't think) but may be able to add later. I addressed this with them as well. For DS exploring you need base maps.
I guess that depends on the purpose. 99% of the time, i just bring my gps along and if we go on new trails (which we do most rides, since i've only been riding every weekend here for 4 years) i turn it on to track and download. I've only needed to look at it while riding a handful of times to locate obscure trails here or in moab. Those times I just clip it to my camelback strap. Seems like the trailtech one will be in danger of debris too, if you're the sort that falls off much.
Most here, have Garmen 60CTX and have them on ram mounts to handlebars- which is waaaayyy more suseptable to getting smashed or bounced loose on the trail than one like this mounted in place of a speedo. If it does everything, I need, I will buy one in a heartbeat.
Have any of you used a GPS in the thick woods? I have an older one that doesn't work well in forests with a thick canopy.
Yep, never lost a signal with my Garmin 60. Geoff (owner of Trailtech) has been testing it all over and is very happy with the performance. The latest receivers are very good.
anyone know if they're using someone else's tech, so as to make it easier to find compatible drivers for mapping programs? can you switch it between bikes easily? i know some of their other computers have a 'bike1 and 'bike2' function, so you just need a separate mount kit, press a button to switch and you're good to go.
Thats my only worry. My Vapor up and dieed one day during a ride and the only thing I can think off was I spilled gas or something got in it. Because replacing the battery didnt help. So....
