The info on SBR is up to date and accurate. The original protest was to happen at the closed gate to Clear Creek. Everyone was going to meet up at the gate. Then, the county roads were re-opened. As you can imagine, this turn of events changed the game considerably. The protest organizer then decided it would be a ride through Clear Creek. Everyone worked their butts off to gain this one concession, and the thought of hundreds of angry dirtriders running roughshod through Clear Creek and not staying on the county roads was a spectre that dismayed a lot of people close to the fight...and rightfully so. Not to mention, if the idea of getting the media to pay attention is at the core of the protest, then the protest being at the Hollister Field Office will be much more productive. It's a loooong way from town to the gate of Clear Creek. Also, the idea is to show what an economic impact riders have on the community when they drive through the town of Hollister on their way to/from a ride at Clear Creek. We used to stop for breakfast, then hit up the Safeway for ice, charcoal, chips and dip, etc. Sometimes we'd stop in at the Honda shop for chain lube or whatnot. We'd fill up the van and/or gas cans before leaving town. Gas alone would usually be about $100. On the way home we'd usually stop in for dinner and then hit the panaderia for a bag of Mexican pastries before heading home. Multiply this by thousands of riders and, well...you get the idea. The latest plan is to meet up at the Hollister Field Office at 10am, get the point across, then have a dualsport ride down through Clear Creek led by one of the leaders of the Save Clear Creek movement. I really, really hope that everyone behaves themselves and that not one rider will add any fuel to the BLM's fire by straying off the county road. WoodsChick
Good stuff. For reference in a local ride area that was closed the local diner reported a 22% drop in sales.
This is interesting! I never would have known this without your input. The threads on SBR get long, quickly. And the early posts are not always updated with the latest information. Now I need to decide where to spend May 2nd... this could be tough.
Egg-zackly. The forecast calls for rain, and the main road through Clear Creek is not the place to be on an SM610 in the rain. On the other hand there will be plenty of MotoXotica rides in the future, but not many protest rides/gatherings for the Creek. Who knows, if we're successful, maybe one of Dan's future rides can actually be held at the Creek WoodsChick
Good thoughts. Since you are up to speed on things, how many expected to show up at the Holister field office? Any idea how they are going to handle the people that will show up at the gate that have the flyer that was passed out telling them that was the place to meet?
Got this... Dear Kelly, Thanks for submitting your letter to help reopen Clear Creek. It made a difference.
