That's my main concern as well. If they're going to continue to honour the 2yr/unlimited warranty offered on the TR650 and parts pricing remains stable, I'm satisfied. Could you clarify this statement? You're inferring that the Paul Feeney Group considered not passing on a factory rebate for the Terra to the customer. You are correct; I read my letter and it was a rebate for the "Husqvarna 110th Birthday Celebration" on any new or approved demo unit. My mild rant of PFG was that they asked a forum member to pass on that it's business as usual in the short term to Husqvarna Australia bike owners which I feel is shabby. In hindsight, a letter is overkill but a statement on their website would have sufficed. Maybe this information could have been used in the AMCN article last week which stated - "The day Pierer Industries signed off on the purchase of Husqvarna, the writing was on the wall for the existing BMW-powered Nuda model, as well as the Strada 650 & Terra 650." I felt this was relevant as the topic of this thread did shift to speculation on the future production of the bike, away from parts availability which is guaranteed for ten years from end of production.
The statement that "... production is continuing well into next year at the minimum and that full parts and support will be available for ten years from the date manufacturing ceases..." probably needs correcting. The 214 production line workers who were terminated on the 2nd June and are currently on benefits standing in the rain outside the Biandronno plant might have a different opinion. Despite this fact, parts supply and service should not be a problem in the future even though it might mean you have to become more friendly with your local BMW dealer than you would like to (access to MOSS), spend more time on CafeHusky and buying consumable parts on the net. Either way, it is still an awesome bike and I vote "BUY". Heck, they will probably become collectible and defy the "golden law of dirt bikes" and go up in value and you will sell it for more than you paid for it.
I'm reasonably sure that what "will happen" has little to do with what has been said. Not my TR650, at least my plan at the moment is to go a whole lotta miles on it... so it would probably not be worth much.
Remember when BMW dropped production of the original GS650 and Dakar models and told everyone to buy the GS800 instead? Nobody listened and instead the prices for used Dakars went up. Eventually BMW re-release 650 as the Sertao to placate demand. The trouble with that was most buyers were opting for the cheaper and better designed TR650, which must have upset some egos in Munich no doubt.
Received an email back, below is the correspondence. There will be NO MORE TERRA/STRADA or BMW based Huskies. So contrary to any other rumors, this is from the horses mouth. I would like to add that the dealer I bought from had 9 Terra/Strada turned back at customs due to paper work issues relating to BMW, KTM and the sale. As far as I or they know, none of the existing stock of TR650 will be shipped to the USA any longer. Dear Mr. Dave, Many thanks for your email of the 14th of June regarding future plans of production of the TR650 Terra. The mentioned bike is still on sale to the Husqvarna dealers until stocks last. The short term strategy will be focused on the Motocross and Enduro range, two and four stroke, with no further production of the street models, which were developed with BMW technology. Husqvarna will soon come back on tarmac with a new, exciting, Supermoto bike which will be introduced in about one year. The full spare parts and customer service for all model years, including 2013 bikes, are fully guaranteed in all Husqvarna factory dealers worldwide. I hope this answer will satisfy your request. I am fully available for further information. That's the most solid answer we've seen through all this. Unfortunate, but I have mine already, so I'm not overly concerned. Last I heard my dealer was down to only a few Huskies (only 1 Strada), without a restock coming until Pierer has things ironed out and official.
I should have one delivered in a few days.. kinda stupid shit though, surely this bike is selling well enough to warrant further production?
Congrats on the buy. My official rumor is that BMW did not sell of the BMW parts that go into the bikes. It is the only logical reason.
I know this is a very old thread but I wanted to add my 2 cents now that we are well into the 'no mans land' of parts support on the Terra and Strada. I foolishly forgot to check my rear brake res cap last Saturday, and somewhere along my ride it wiggled itself off. I made it home OK (bladder stayed in place) but I am now feeling the consequences of owning a single-year bike... The dealer I bought it from last April made it crystal clear that I was not going to get any help - they are no longer a Husky dealer since the line changed hands. I have called 4 other dealers in NJ, NY and CT - some 3 or 4 times - and not one has returned my calls. I decided to call my old shop in CA and I did get a call back, the factory informed them that the cap is out of stock and will be indefinitely... so much for a decade of parts support, we are less than 2 years out and all the rear brake reservoir caps? There is nothing in all of the warehouse that is compatible? My Strada just became a very large paperweight until I can figure out what to do.
Check the interchange thread, there is nothing special about that rear reservoir. Something like a $3 piece. IIRC someone used one from a Ducati because they had it laying around, and others have gone with some other units as well. There are some trick looking aluminum ones for pretty cheap too.
Any universal rear brake reservoir should work. As msmith said it is just a vessel to hold your fluid, the real work is done at the master cylinder and brake unit. All you really need is one that the bolt approximates matching up with one on the frame. The BMW F650gs one will work. About $14
I go to the ktm parts store and have been able to order what I need so far directly from them. I am about to order the airbox so I will see how that goes any one else have problems finding parts?
Ducati res is the same. You cannot just order the cap, you have to order the whole thing. $9 is what mine cost earlier this year at Husky dealer. When I looked on ebay, they were higher than the dealer. There is one chinese supplier has the whole reservoir for like 6 bucks, if you want to wait 2 weeks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brake-Clutc...Parts_Accessories&hash=item233663cddb&vxp=mtr
I second Ktm-Parts. I ordered the air box lid and it was shipped out the next day along with the radiator reservoir cap. Great service.
As far as I can tell, the rear brake reservior on the TR650 is identical to the unit on the BMW F650/F800 models, yet I have searched and I can find no comparable discussion on their forums about caps going missing. Strange.
yep, didn't mean to double post but I found this thread after the fact: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/rear-brake-reservoir.42122/#post-428911 it looks like the BMW will fit perfectly, and as mentioned above there are ebay options too. I know the reservoir isn't anything special, but with my horrible luck the 'universal' reservoir I order will have a totally different bolt hole pattern or different size nipple for the line... so I'm glad it looks like I can find a replacement cap and be done with it. I have to admit, I find it a little frustrating that I have to go cross-brand / fleabay for parts on a bike when the factory warranty is not even up yet; for something as simple as an oil change I need to cross-reference a 'main stream' bike (GS650) just to order the filter. I know our machines are not exactly Honda Civics, but a little dealer/retail support would go a long way... at least that's been my experience so far. Scouring the net for replacement parts was not exactly the 'adventure' I had in mind, but maybe I'm just cranky from the recent lack of seat time. meh.
You can get the oil filters at any husky or ktm dealership actually. I just ordered a few in advance.
I'm going to go ahead and recant just about everything I said, I'm starting to think it was a matter of very bad timing. One of the dealers I had called when this all started 2 weeks ago actually called me back yesterday with an updated ETA on the brake reservoir (end of August). She apologised for the confusion and told me that they have had major communication issues with Husky since the KTM sale, but those issues are clearing up very quickly now - her words. So my guess is that there was a small window of poor support during the transition and I somehow managed to need everything during that window. I may have also just had bad luck with horrible parts people; one guy asked me to double-check the model number because Husky doesn't make a TR650 - it said so in the microfiche. Anyway it looks like things are sorting out and all my frustration was misguided.
