Walt call er a 185 close enough and the that number also has that enduro/old school DS 2 stroke recognition factor. That recognition factor is built in as well.

I will let TNT Timber decide what to call it. He will be the beneficiary.

My forum name on many sites is Beta Steve. Glad you liked my 300, wish I could have given your 165 a go… Truth is I am closer to 60 than I care to admit and while 25 years ago a bike like yours would have been fun, now a 300 suits me better. Whatever gets you out there to have fun works, right? Nice to get a little exposure from some open minded non Beta owners… Unlike those on the GG site.
To answer a few asked, and unasked questions: The suspension was done by John at MotoPro in Woodinville WA, and given my trials background and lack of speed [compared to you] I'm sure it was too soft. Nothing a stiffer set of springs couldn't cure. Sachs suspension is highly under rated and in the hands of Les, John or numerous other tuners, can be made good enough for probably 90% of the riders out there… Other than the suspension, [too] wide tank, JD tuning [it was James' "beta" Beta 2t] Flexx bars and various personalized and protection bits, it's a stock bike. JD put one of his custom made needles in, changed the jetting, changed the pv spring and ran it, with a street tire shod KTM wheel, on his dyno. Graph can be seen on his site, 47 rwhp, best power band characteristics with the pv 1.25 in from full out.
The feels like a 125 comments likely came from 250 and 300 owners who's bikes are 20-25 lbs heavier. They know who they are. Still love that company and given the urge for another trials bike, it would probably be on red...
Kelly, I've never had, nor felt the need for a steering damper, but your comments intrigued me. Pm or email me some info when you get the chance, I would like to learn more...

Great post Steve, thanks for the input. Also thanks a gob for letting me try your bike. We need to hook up for another ride and I'll bring the 165. You will like that bike much more. The way that one is setup it is like a mini version of your Beta, well sorted out, much better power then the 144 of mine you struggled with, has a way more forgiving motor, much softer suspension and feels a lot like a smaller lighter less powerful version of your Beta. BTW I had literally picked up the 144 days before you rode it and that was my first ride on it as well. I have done a lot to it since then. Replaced the forks with much upgraded very high tech all redone 50mm zokes that work great. Changed the shock settings but still need a stiffer spring and possible revalve. Adjusted the powervalve and carb. It is a much more forgiving bike than when you sampled it. As for your Beta I loved it. I am not much into 250 or 300 bikes anymore. I used to ride 250,360 and 450 bikes all the time and still own a TE511 and KX500 but have pretty much been on 125/144/165 bikes since switching over in 09. Thats said I found your bike amazingly comfortable, controllable, and thought it worked great. You have done a really nice job setting it up and it shows. Would like to ride a bone stock one to compare. If Beta comes out with a 200 or less cc bike it would be at the top of my list. Sherco is rumored to be getting ready to release a 175 which sounds perfect to me. So may great choices these days.

Me new forks and ass set up better than when you rode it...

Not these, TC. completely redone by Richard at house of HP. High end "leave nothing untouched" revalve, custom wound progressive springs, DCL coating... the works. they are amazing. Feel trail plush but race ready / control. Amazing forks.

Dunno, a bunch to do it all. This was a industry "bro" deal as I do biz with Richard and he wanted to do it all up for me as I ride a lot with a lot of people and he know this would get some publicity. Had I been paying full boat I would not have done the DCL and red/gold fork bling. The valving and springs are pretty amazing though.

Oh my that is a find there! I might have a heart attack if one pops up on CL near me. Ain't likely though. I can't even get a Beta dealer to call me back...

Over on the www.betarider.org site there is a thread that links all the used Beta's to be found on craigslist. As far as the Idaho 300, the old saying 'if it's too good to be true' comes to mind… I mean really, who, in this day and age, gives something away for a couple grand less than it's worth?

I just ordered a 300rr race. My dealer also sells Husky. If I don't like it, I can always trade it in for a ktmvarna

I'm going to check out a 250 hopefully either this weekend or early next week. I've never had a chance to sit on one and really check it out. Seen a few from afar. Can't find many, if any, bad words yet that aren't personal preference. Have to see what kind of deal I can get from the dealer on the one he has coming in and if I can get rid of a few bikes quickly. Got 2 I keep procrastinating putting up for sale that I'll stick on Craigslist next Monday. Got another I have to rebuild to sell soon as well.

No problem :) I saw that ad 4 days in and couldn't believe it... was doing my damndest to figure out how to get to Idaho Falls while fighting the flu and not piss my wife off :)

a bridge to far for a to good to be true bike...

When I called the seller he didn't want to talk, he realized he lowballed the bike and was educated pretty quick... I think they'er must have been a bidding war...
