Will there be a trade-in for our cylinders? Or is the '09+ 125 cylinder not what Walt is using? Most all of us that have gone to 144 still have our new/almost new 125 top ends laying around.

I pmed walt about the 144 kit and have bean reading all posts on the 165 now that ive read this
ill be swinging to the 165 he has a 200 to ive read about but i think 200 might be a bit to big for the 125 bottom end time will tell just gota get xmas out the way and the cagiva back to geather and my cr125 is up for a make over its going to be a long 6 weeks wait for my 165 kit but you have reashord me i will be happy ive got a tuner with dyno that hand makes pipes he thinks he can moderfey my CHR pipe but i all so have a contact who makes custom pipes

No 200. Just use 200 pipes. I think the 62 mm bore is about it for the current bottom end. It certainly is for the cylinder. I have many, many, many hours on my bottom end with first the heavier Mahle piston kit and now the custom piston kit with no problems whatsoever. But add some stroke(exta piston speed/forces) or even more bore with a sleeve and you probably will find the tip over point for reliability pretty quick.

After the Holidays, I'll be installing my kit. Walt thinks it will work well with my DynoPort 144 pipe. As I mentioned before, DynoPort could be a source for Hybrid 200/165 pipes. Rich Daly (DynoPort owner) feels that he best KTM 200 pipe is his KDX 200 pipe. I'll be working with Rich on this, but unfortunately snowmobiles, not motorcycles pay the bills at DynoPort. He won't be able to devote any time to the pipes until Spring.

    CH tiddler faithful,

I never really intended to be in the 165 kit business. I always assumed that the demand would be extremely limited by the supply of the older 7 transfer port cylinders. Once I was able to successfully weld(it is really tight in there) up the newer 5 transfer port cylinders it open'nd up a completely new supply of cylinders to use. Now if there was an unlimited supply of the Mahle piston kits that George Erl uses so well there would be no need for what I do. But with that being said I went ahead and had custom forged piston's made to specs I really like from another makes basic design. That is how I got to where the project is today. I don't do this with profit as a motive and this creates kits that have an almost unfair price advantage. Enter my conversations with Kelly and Motosportz. His involvement will solve a lot of issues that moving forward with these kits creates.

As I have mentioned to a couple of others, I love doing this work but it is a side light/hobby and not my real job. My least favorite part of the equation is trying to retail something when I do it for virtually nothing. I have made a commitment to several other CH faithful and will honor those commitments. After that I will be very happy to let Kelly do what he does best. I did the same thing with the spring kits through Hall's and I think that works best for all concerned. It will hopefully limit delays and make availability much easier. The only down side is that it will add a little cost to what I give the kits away for but I think it is worth it for all concerned.

Sorry for the long diatribe but I thought a little explanation was in order,

This bike IMHO and for my riding makes perfect power. I no longer need or want a 200. This is perfect power wise. Will be testing the 125 FMF Fatty and Doma pips shortly to see the difference it is with the of the shelf pipes.

Good stuff Walt. Whatever works out for this I am in. Stoked at the end result and as I have a lot of time and tuning on the 125/144 it is a good fit. We have tons of those running around here now too. We have quite the active 125 group on this board. People found out how fun these bikes are, how much ability they have and how fun they are to mess with. This 165 ends up a near perfect trail bike IMHO and would be a great race bike as well.

What would this 165 kit work like on a mx track that is what I ride 90% time.. I have my org 2008 cr125 cylinder still and oem 144 cylinder also but it has about 70 track hours on it and still looks good. What would cost be approx and how would it work with my old tmx carb that works great with my 144 cylinder right now. The nice thing about the 144 kit is it improved bottom and mid range alot but top end still pulls really hard up top which I like. I take there is no bottom end work needed like 144 kit just bolt on and would my DEP pipe work ok. Thanks for any help.

If you are going to use the 165 for MX, you would need to gear it way up so you can use the bottom torque and expansive mid-range. On an MX track 1st and 2nd would be pretty much useless with 13x52 gearing. The usable power band is probably bigger than the 144 it is just lower. You are making serious hay with the 165 from 5K to 10.5K rpm. After that not so much. It is really like riding a mellow 250 2T that handles like a 125. Don't know if that is what will get it done for you as it will feel completely different motorwise than the 144. Everything bolts up just like the 144 kit. My experience with the 125 pipes like the stocker or the FMF Fatty is that while it still runs vastly better on the bottom/mid than the 144, the pipe isn't tuned to run as well where the 165 makes its hay. I put a 200 KTM stocker pipe that was made by FMF on my buddy Jon's 165. It is more in line with the gnarly than the Fatty and that bike is a handful off idle through the mid-range. Perfect at higher elevations but anything below 6000' and you need throttle control. I am installing a G-2 throttle and #400 cam for him. I think the 200 sx pipe is a really nice compromise. I can't wait to try the KDX 200 pipe as it should be a nice melding of the two too.

You know ya'all are crazy right? The whole lot of you, nuts!

    But in a good way.

I can't wait to throw my leg over one of these. I always seem to like the 125 over the 144, I wonder if this will be different.

I will let you know my thoughts in 6 months when I can ride again.

I would think it would be far better for MX. You will come out of corners a lot harder and less clutch, you have much more instant power to jump short take offs, It will do far better out of the gate. I went into this thinking it might and bottom end grunter, it has more bottom but also more mid and top. No holes int he powerband and just pulls hard but not to hard. It does feel like a soft 250 in the 125 frame.

Vid of me riding it up a long HP hill. No bogs, if it sounds that way it is because I am letting off. Plenty of power. As with any vid the hill is far steeper than it looks.

A little trail riding. We took it pretty EZ as the ground was frozen and that nice looking snow was SLICK as it was packed and frozen. It has been there for weeks. Looks hot out but is about 30.

Unfortunetly I did not have time to try a 165 at the gathering. I am enjoying the midrange punch and good top end of my 144 though. Recently I switched to a trials tire and it works great but with the way I changed my riding style to match it a 165 would probably work better.
What I like about a 144 is that it still feels like a small bore. I really do not like the KTM200 feel at all. Does the 165 feel anything like either of these motors?

Hmmm,I think a private track session with some of Husky's upper management is due!!1 Fred Hoess is the North East rep ,right?...being a strong 125 racer, this may help the push for a new displacement we've been waiting for:)...of course ,all of Walt's hard work should be well compensated for $$$$$$!
    THANK YOU ,MR. WALT :banana::applause::cheers:

Thanks, but I do this because I love doing it. There are many more qualified people for Husky to employ when they get serious about this kind of stuff. My only attribute is that I am going to go do what I want to do and not let stumbling blocks get in my way. I don't have to think about the big picture or budgets and volume sales. The worst that can happen is I spend a little of my money and still have fun failing. I have sold ~ 75 spring kits and I still haven't broken even for all the investment but it is getting close. If something I do allows great businesses like Hall's and Motosportz to make a living then it is all worth it. JMO

I only rode Walt's 165 around the parking lot, mostly because I did not want to get the fever. But, I can tell you the sound coming from his bike is absolutely enough reason to make the 165 conversion.
