My machinist came up with that one a while back. We both decided it was not a good idea to mount the post to a moving part but at this point it is not out of the question. Our idea as to use the ID of the stem to mount something like a bicycle gooseneck of had guard end mounts and then something that pivots on the top. The down side is most the force still resides on the tank bolt as it trying to pull it side to side. It would also mean raising the bars more and a different bracket as out current damper setup sits right on top the steer stem. We also figured people would be in horror when they saw it. Might have to revisit that.

What about a 2 piece mount? A weld on tab and a bolt on bracket. That way you can still get the tank on and off.

That's about what it is going to amount to.

Will you guys weld a post?

Welding is fine so long as the welded post can be used with either stock tank or IMS.

How far back can you cut the Mounting Tab on the Tank before it perforates ?
I did a Tap Test with a nickel and it sounds solid past the mounting bolt.

I looked at this as well. If you shine a light in there and hold a dentist mirror you can see it gets hollow way up there. I almost trimmed mine but was thinking I might be headed down a slippery slope.

I rode over to BRP on my new 610. They dont have any plans to make anything for my new bike. But they do stock various sized weld on tower posts, differnt length arms, etc.

Bought a weld-on tower, and "5" arm. Some custom grinding of the tower base, and cutting the tower post down a bit, then just a quick weld to the frame. No biggie.

Just sayin lots of us already weld the towers.

If Motosportz had an under the bars dampner for my 610 i would buy it! :)

    Know any more about this?

acerbis will be bring over a new oversize tank for husky in about 2 months, since they are the OEM on the husky i would expect xlnt fit and finish. this will be for the new 08 and 09 bikes

    http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=720955

Sounds like this could solve the problem for me, assuming true and that Acerbis does not repeat IMS' mistake.

Welding does not bother me if that's what it's gonna take.

 After I read that I thought "What the hell?!?" Then I looked up their address... 10min ride from my house, how'd I miss that.

Been on their site a hundred times, somehow I never thought of checking their address. :banghead:

    Learn somthin new everyday.

I guess we assume from the deafening silence that this is not going to happen. :banghead:

Are there any other steering stabilizers that will work with the IMS tank? Any news on that Acerbis tank as far as compatibility goes?

GPR did not work out. I will either need to deform my tank of order another tank and hope it is less chubby in the front.

At the first of the year I'll have a weld on post ready.

    - I've looked at all the options, just no room. Using the stem center was considered but just to messy / complicated and introduced other issues.

Kelly, can you elaborate on "weld on" post method? Would this method allow switching back to stock tank?
I installed steering damper 3 weeks before I recieved IMS oversized tank, and have yet to installl tank due to logistics.

We still outta luck? Weld is definitely out? How much heat gunning and deforming would be required to make at least a weld work?

As you are in the Seattle area Call Jeff Tasky at Taskys metric cycle. He has a guy who welds some one and has done the huskys with the IMS tank.
