On the bestds website they advocate advancing the TPS to enrichen the mixture and advance the ignition, to take the place of remapping the ECU on the "S" models. Sound reasonable but does anyone know if this is truly effective? Cam.

You mean you want pro's and con's of advancing the TPS to 5 volts?
Pro- gives more fuel earlier, helps to some degree. Con- increases ignition timing early which can cause detonation in an already lean environment. DynoJet is already making a PCV to fit the S models and you can load a second zero map for fuel economy/hot start.

Howdy, I just spent the last hour or so reading through all 12 pages. Got some great info in here! So I just picked up 2015 fe501s and I would like to give you a brief run down on my thoughts and plans with the bike. I also would love it if you guys could help answer some questions I have.

My ktm dealer said he would be able flash my ECU and put the EU map on. I will be doing that and removing all of the emissions junk off the bike here soon.

My break-in period will consist of about 3-5 hours of easy motor work. Nothing past half throttle. Change the oil after 1st hour, 3rd hour and then every time after 5 hours.

I plan on converting it to supermoto but will be using it as an all around bike. 15 minute commute to work (12 minutes on highway at 70mph, 3 minutes in the city). On the weekends I will, take it to the local go-kart track, throw on the knobbies and hit the trails or use it as my sole purpose to have some fun around the city!

    Questions:
Does anyone have a good video/website with instructions or info on how to remove the emissions crap?
I plan on changing my oil filters to SS, what company do you use/where can I get these?
Will a 5" rear rim fit this swingarm?
Do you guys have any recommendations or advice for me?

Lastly, do you guys have any questions for me?

This is an awesome thread and I am happy to have found it!

Hey Tyler...I grew up in Columbus (Westerville) and just moved to GA about 15 years ago. Love GA but still a Buckeye. Go Bucks...kill the tide!

More power to you but I'd hate riding one of these on the freeway routinely. Anyway, regarding desmogging. Go to www.bestdualsportbikes.com

This guy has some tutorials and has a kit with all the parts to desmog. He's talking about a 350 KTM but the deal is the same. And I suppose you know that the motors on the 500EXC and our 501 are the same.

Except of a PITA in adjusting the idle and an IMS tank that doesn't come close to fitting...my bike has been great. Just did about 70 woods miles on it today. Perfect!!

Why is it such an issue modifying the 501s ECU when I know of numerous KTM dealerships willing to reflash my 500exc ECU? Aren't the ECU's the same?

Also, I was wrong. I've mentioned a few times that I thought the motor was in a very mild state of tune and just didn't feel powerful. Well.... turns out I had my JD tuner set incorrectly and the motor was running rich. I have since set it to JD specs for 'EXC w/ stock exhaust' and now I'm feeling it.

My jump to EFI has had its ups and downs, but I am now fully sold. I bought the bike, rode it on the streets for 1hr (for the break in oil change) and then desmogged, uncorked the exhaust, added the JD tuner (unknowingly set too rich) and went to the Cali high country (8k+') for 2 weeks. The bike would barely idle at elevation and I ran out of gas on my first ride (at 80 miles instead of 100 miles like most other owners seem to be getting). I leaned out the tuner two steps across the board for the remainder of my trip and it was much better, but still very sluggish above 10'k. Turns out I cant follow instructions and had the tuner set too rich.

After putting 25hrs on the bike I came home, reset the tuner to my original specs (too rich) and was still underwhelmed. The motor had 25hrs to loosen up and I'm at sea level, so I was expecting big power, but it was still soft across the board. I finally re-read the JD instructions, kicked myself in the ass and reset the tuner. Problem solved.

EFI hasn't made dirt bikes dummy proof yet!

If a KTM dealer gets caught modifying a ECU on a street legal bike they could lose their dealership license. I am not sure if the ECU leaves a trace or record once hooked up to a programming unit, but that may be how KTM can trace such actions. This is why you get goofy recommendations, like the one's from bestdualsports, ETC.

I understand the dealer takes a great risk by flashing the ECU, but I dont understand why so many KTM owners have had their ECU's flashed while it seems no Husky owners have.

The problem might be that when a KTM is reflashed that doesn't necessary mean that the ECU now has the "Euro" map. There are a variety of maps available and the dealer may be just uploading the most current (updated) version of the map that the bike came with.

Where I live the dealer would NOT even consider loading the "Euro" map on a 500 EXC or 500 XCW. They stated exactly what Tinken mentioned above.

Most 14 Husky's can and do have the Euro map on the ECU. My dealer actually suggested the "Euro" map before I took the bike and gladly did it free of charge.

501s is different, falls under the same rules as the 500exc.

Correct. I'm well aware of that point. Maybe I didn't make that clear in my post above.

    Hey Tinken,
Sorry to dig out such an old quote, but I have a question I hope you would shed some light on as I have a new FE501 in the garage that I'll be breaking in once the weather here allows. Bike has yet to be started since I've had it.

What oil do you recommend as optimal for the first oil changes?
Do you guys have a specific break-in time plan that you do? something like run 30 mins/full cool down...

and for the biggie: have you seen the break-in plan posted by the dude on mototune? thoughts? He kind of calls for avoiding too soft a break-in process (as called for in the OM). But looking at my FE501 manual it is not really specific for break in.

    Any info much appreciated...

    Gracias.

You must have missed the break in requirements/suggestions in the manual. I don't have it in front of me but it says something like max half throttle for first hour, then max 75% for the next couple. Change oil at 1 hour. I've pretty much gone by the throttle opening suggestions but I absolutely wouldn't recommend WFO at the start, except for maybe the briefest of time.

I did the oil change with filter at about 3hrs est. or about 100 miles +/-. I used the recommended Motorex 10-40, which I've used on my 610 since new with no problems. May go to a SS filter just as a precaution but I'm not alarmed by the 0 weight comments, especially here in GA where it can get pretty hot.

BTW...magnetic plug had what you could compare to a little bit of graphite on it. As clean as any new bike I've owned.
