http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2012models/2012-husqvarna.htm The TE630 and SMR630 are listed as new 2012 Husqvarna models . I can't find anything else online confirming or denying a discontinue of the 630 models for 2012.
Well, they don't show one in the product guide that I got a hold of and I was there looking at the entire line up of 2012 models last Friday and there was not one present. So I would think that there aren't any. I also saw no SM models of any sort in the product guide. This leads me to believe that there is no 2012 630.
That's not an official site. It even omits the TXC310, one of the most marketing new models... That said, Husky's site (not HuskyNA) lists the new models. It also shows the TE630 there. It does not mention what model year the 630 is and it is typical for a manufacturer not to pull a discontinued model from their site when there is still product in the field. Seeing as I know of two local dealers with a TE630 on their floor... Anyways, my point is, we still don't know what's up for certain.
The product guide that I have, was handed to me by the president of Husqvarna USA at the demo ride where the complete current 2012 line up of Husqvarna models were present. There are 13 new models: TE250, TE310, TE449, TE511, CR125, TC250, TC449, TXC250, TXC310, TXC511, WR125, WR250, WR300. No 630, no SMR models for the US market for 2012.
I would say for certain there is no TE630 for 2012!! You can bet that's the last of those motors from Husqvarna. From here out it will be a BMW/Kymco effort. They probably 'let' Husky build a 'quota' for the production run from their completed R&D of the design. When it didn't sell like hotcakes, which they shouldn't have expected it to, they dropped the price to move 'em out and put the new model on the drawing board for completion. Probly see it for next season.
Manufacturers have done funny things in the past to keep us puzzled and confused. I can remember early year model, half year and late year releases. In fact not too long ago Suzuki decided to take a year off from making bikes all together. I hope there is a 2012 TE630 model considering it was just “all new” and because I have one! How about a carry over with BNG?? The future looks grim based on what everyone is saying...time will tell for certain.
Nahhh........The only grim aspect is what we create in our minds! If you have a 610/630 then I would just worry about what adventure you'll point it to next. Let the market or BMW/Husky get overpaid to make things they think we want......they eventually will make something that's good.
I don't see a problem either and Husky seems to be hitting on all cylinders but you never know ... I'd like to see the real sales numbers on the bikes and where they are being sold it ... Are these numbers or anything close available when bmw opens its books quarterly to share holders? And right, these companies will change directions quickly sometimes and leave customers guessing as to why ....
Thank god, because all their current bikes only have one cylinder! Badda boom. Thank you, I'll be here all week. Remember to tip your waitress.
Guys, What I meant to say was the future looks grim for the TE/SMS 630 model to continue from 2012 and on. I agree that husky and BMW are headed in the right direction. Competition and technology is a good thing for us consumers. I'll happily keep my TE630 for a while . With just a few bolt on parts it has been one of the most fun and versatle bikes I've owned in over 30 years.
As long as the parts are supplied for that bike, it should be good for tens of thousands of miles ... ~years of riding for someone...
I don't doubt that BMW/Husqvarna are working up a new 650 class dual sport. This may be the next big market segment. DS are exploding, as the plate is exacting a smaller and smaller penalty in terms of offroad performance than ever before. If you're in the market for an offroad dirt bike, you kinda gotta ask yourself anymore why you WOULDN"T get a DS. Seems to me that the 610/630 tooling was paid for many moons ago and the current $6499 represents the fact that Husqvarna could undercut KTM by nearly half and dominate the market. I doubt hardly any 690 KTMs have moved since Husky dropped their prices. That, and like me, anyone who was even remotely interested in a DR or XRL 650 dropped that idea like a hot potato. My thinking is that Husky/BMW are working on a dream 650 class thumper, that is, lightweight(280-290 lbs), powerful, modern, well geared, reliable and right-priced. The TE630 was so close on most counts . . . all, in fact, except weight and emissions drivability. Most of the TE630 was tooled years ago on the 610. Most large manufacturers expect to be paid back on tooling in 2-3 years. Any way you slice it, tooling for this bike has been long paid for, with the exception of the cylinder head, which was mostly from the 510. I think Husky might have been taken a little by surprise on the demand for the 630 after the price reduction and may be rethinking their phase out / business plan for this segment. I think they sold ALOT of 630s in the last 3 months. ALOT.
WhiteAndRed should get a job with Husq/BMW. I'm with you 100% there. Well, except for the weight thing. I don't see how they'll shave off another 30lbs when starting with a heavier motor. At the dealer meeting last week that Dan attended, he said 2013 they promised 'something worth the wait'. I have plenty of time to put some miles on the 630. I'll bet the used market holds up nicely if the segment really grows as you suggest. I bought my '07 KTM 250XCFW almost 3 years ago, as an almost 2 year old with 40 hours. It was state of the art at the time with the newly minted RC4 motor, and still current enough to bring almost as much in resale as it did back then. There just aren't any for sale in the entire country, as was the case back then as well. My point is that some bike models have a high demand within a broad rider segment. Not sure about the TE, but there sure are a lot of new riders on them. And they all say it's a really great bike!
Being the go-to guy for the 630 shop manual on 3-4 forums, I can vouch for that. I felt like I was the only one that had a 630 until the price dropped. Since the price drop, I have received 1-2 requests for the shop manual every day.
I was just looking at BMW's website to check out what is offered there. Their GS650 thumper is seriously outdated. The engine gets incredible fuel economy, but, the chassis is horrible, IMHO. It weighs almost exactly 100lbs more than the TE630. I don't see a whole lot that can be gained from BMW with regard to a better DS given how dismal the GS650 is. Can that ROTAX engine really weigh that much more than the Husky engine?
I believe this is what really did in the 610/630. Husky/BMW went to great lengths with the 630 (new heads, twin mufflers, fuel injection, catalytic converter, etc.) and still were unable to produce a motorcycle based on the engine that ran well AND met emission and noise requirements. Things were only going to get worse as time goes on. The only way to make a 630 perform also made it illegal to operate in most first world countries. No world-class manufacturer is going to produce such an animal very long.
That´s exactly the way I read it. Tougher EU bike regulations are in the offing and the 630 is sailing very close to the wind. So am glad I got one while the going is still good. All bikes made for sale in Europe in the near future will have to deal with the environmental legal issues and that´ll be very difficult for single cylinder bikes.
