Interesting. How old of a motor was he comparing it to?


I forgot one more important WR250 detail. The lower chain rollers mount is just tack welded on. It likes to break off. Many of the used WR250's I see are missing the roller but the owners usually don't notice it.

I ran 13/50 gearing on my WR250 and it was plenty low. It was on 02 though and the 07 I ride every once in a while pulls the stock gearing (13/48) really well. This is especially true after the owner put a 38mm PWK on. That makes it such a great motor! If the 300 has the same gearing as the 250 it is going to be plenty low.

The frame has not changed, so that skidplate will work. I have that same plate and have used it on three WR-250's ( same plate, just transfered it from bike to bike ) and it's held up fine. I believe you can get it thru Motosportz.com. They are a good source for aftermarket as well as OEM parts.

Just curious,...what does a new Keihin PWK 38 carb cost?
I'm assuming it will fit right in the stock rubber boots,....will the stock throttle cable hook right up to it?

Last I looked the cheapest was at Service Honda. Check for a 99 or 00 CR250. I think they were like 170. Next cheapest was munn racing with ktmtalk discount, I think about 185. It is almost the same length as the TMX so it fits fine. I used a cable from a 99 Honda CR250 as it is long enough to route the cable behind the headlight.

If you switch to the pwk, you will want to run a #7 slide. The carb from Service Honda is set up for a Honda CR, and I don't know which slide it comes with. Carb Parts Wharehouse sells the Pwk with the #7 slide and extra jets for $240.00. I believe the TMX on the 300 is different than the one on the 250, so it will be interesting to see how it runs compared to the 250.

I'm pretty sure George makes the plate for the 2 strokes. 1 714 540-2920...you might get him tomorrow. Pretty much sells over the phone as the web site is not back up...

I would try this bike before purchasing a carb, it is going to be a good thing that Kearney is on one, hopefully there will be a set up report. I ordered my PWK through a friend's Honda dealer from a 2000 CR 250, it came with the 7.0 slide and I think one of the other jets I settled on. Needles I had to get from Sudco.

Oh yeah absolutely. All the press I've read says this is an all new carb, so I'll give it a chance. I won't just write the new TMX 38 off as junk until it proves itself to be junk. But it is good to know there's a fix.
I'd sure as heck hate to have to pioneer the jetting for a PWK on a new, first model year 300 motor though. I don't have that kind of patients for tinkering. Maybe James will come out with a JD Jetting kit for the stock Mikuni as well as the Keihin soon,....

Sorry, the very night I posted that I'd gotten it, an ice storm (freezing rain) blasted through here and dropped trees down across power lines all over Boyd county. Lights went out about 10:30 pm that night and didn't come back on for two days.

Not following you on the "Sumpter" ride report. Do you mean as in Sumpter, South Carolina? You may have me confused with someone else who just got one,...I'm an ol' Kentucky boy,...Geez I wish I was in South Carolina right now!

All I've gotten to do so far is a couple of 'break-in' spins around the two lane blacktop backroads. I can tell you that at 60* F./600' above msl, after she's warmed up good, she carburets pretty cleanly. And that's with 32:1 "break-in mix" too. It's drooling a little spooge though.

I personally have not seen any of this horrible, ill-tempered, Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde "hit" that the Aussie mag reported. It'll lug down low on the bottom end, and transition into an awesome mid-range that'll put a goofy grin on your face, with very little throttle input, in a very linear and contollable way. It's maybe not as "electric" feeling as my 300XCW is,...but it's certainly nothing to be intimidated by.
I was climbing a little grade on the road out front the other day and grabbed 2nd pretty hard at about it's mid-range, and it just voluntarily carried the front wheel about a foot high for about 10 yards up that slope without any intentional input from me for it to wheelie. That made me smile and pet it on the tank. You can feel that it's gonna be strong just dumbing around the house here with it. It's plenty stout but all it wants is a little respect and some throttle control.
Haven't seen the extent of it's top end yet, 40 mph is about all I've had it up to around the neighborhood. Trying not to wring it out just yet, and also trying to draw as little attention to myself as possible from the Po-Po,...and those who might call the Po-Po if one was becoming a PITA.

By the time it warms up some around here I should have it prepped and ready for a good trail test.

But thanks for the info. Being that you have owned a 300 xcw makes your opinion very useful. Please keep us informed when you do hit the trails. I want to know how the suspenders compare to KTM.

Hey Rusty - So you just ride on roads? Is your plan to turn that WR into a Super Motard? I heard that you're planning to put slicks on it. It's 60* and you want it to warm up some? Is there a cloud in the sky or something? You haven't even posted a photo of the bike! These guys have been very patient waiting for a ride report. You better get cracking, or you're gonna get your butt kicked out of the Husky fraternity!

No,...no super motard and no slicks. I still have to take it back to Gateway to get the pipe and the headlight issues resolved, and if it's all the same to you I'd rather it be clean when I do.
I'm not finished getting all my protection items on it yet,...haven't received my Motosportz skidplate yet. The WNF trails don't open for 2 more months, and I really haven't had the time to drop everything and drive down to H/M by myself just to bury the thing in knee deep quagmire just to placate you. Yes I did post a pic,...can't remember which thread,...but it's here somewhere. If you'd look around a bit instead of hounding me you'd probably find it.
I'm not retired like you, and don't have every day free to just fritter away riding around on snow covered roads with ice screw tires.

The Husky front Brembo seems to bite harder and faster than the KTM
Brembo's. Dirt Rider Magazine noted this also in their review of the WR300, and I had to find out the hard way. My 06 KTM 250XC front
binder is a little more smoother. You will really like your new scooter, I love my 09 WR300!
