Heikki Mikkola "The Flying Finn" was also my favorite rider as a kid. I liked Husky's best as a kid and thought he was the coolest rider. I've still got one of his '74 500cc Championship commemorative buttons.
I would have to say an Ohioan (Ricky Riggs). He was sponsored by Wetzel Husqvarna out of Mentor, Ohio. He'd be putting on his leathers, I would go sign him in, as the starting line took off and after a few short Harescramble laps, he'd be leading overall. He gave Frank Gallo some good runs. I caught up to Rick a year ago and he was still breaking horses!
I'm sorry, but my jaw just drops at the feats all these riders conquered. I think everyone mentioned in this post is just flat out "The Greatest".. They are all my favorites. To think they were doing all this stuff on those super outdated bikes. How dare any of us complain while racing a GNCC, HS on our new age bikes. I am deeply humbled by these guys.
I agree....but those super outdated bikes were "state of the art" back in the day....especially with eric crippa doing the tuning
I liked Mikkola too, but I really liked the tall, skinny American kid, Mike Hartwig. He blazed for a little while on a Husky, but then switched to a Yamaha and fizzled out.
I have to admit that I was totally made up when I found out that Scott Summers had moved over to Husky. I'd just bought my TE and was googling for info when I found an article by him. It was Scott who many years ago inspired me to persevere with my unfashionable and outdated XR600. I followed his commonsense tips on setup and riding and it all just fell into place. Top guy.
Oh God No. Better clear that Up Fast. No3 is just my choice of plate #. Must say I notice 3 is conected to Husky every where I turn not to mention they started in 1903 if I'm not wrong. Anyway dont want to start any weegie board threads I am not the rider in the picture I would more likely be the guy he just ran over. Biggest claim to fame I have is ran over by Rodney Smith (Team Suzuki) in this years Hang Over Race, my problem was I was on a KTM.
1980's dynamic duo: Larry Roeseler and Scot Harden. Got to meet them back then and on one lucky weekend rode with them (correction - rode way behind them)
Praise for Husky off road Heros I agree with all of the above comentes. for me the standout is Terry Cuningham when he ruled the natonal enduro series he was very stingy about letting other riders win, and remember throughout the 80's every Japanees manufacter had A factory enduro effort as did KTM Can Am. I think he could win any natonal hare scrambles or GNCC at any time had it not been for conflicts in team tactics. A few others I like to mention Ron Bohn, Bill Kane, Ed Lojack. Husky has had A rich raceing haritage indeed!
