My wife wanted a new CUV last year and ended up getting a Subie Forester XT. I was pretty adamant about not buying a Subie (it's embarrassing how many are running around Portland), but after I drove it I was hooked. Once the boost hits about 8psi that little car is scooting! And it handles good too.

Now I want a WRX for myself.....

Ive been a mechanic for 17 years, and master mechanic for over 10 years working for dealerships. I've worked for Saab, mitsubishi, and Lexus in that time span. I loved for working for saab, still own one, but the 9-7x and 9-2x are not Saabs. They are quirky cars, that have a few issues. But they are just great fun to drive.
F@@@ mitsubishi, you couldn't give me one of their cars, hated working on them, hated everything about that car line.
Now if you want a dead reliable car you can't go wrong with a Toyota/Lexus. Rarely do I ever get to do repairs to these cars other then maintenance items. Out of all the brands ive worked for the biggest thing that surprised my about Lexus was the amount of vehicles that come in with well over 150-200K miles.
If you want gas mileage you won't get it with a toy/Lexus suv.
All that being said I personally drive a 14' Ram 1500 V6 8 speed 4 door. It has to be one of the nicest driving/ riding trucks i have ever driven. The Ram doesn't have leaf spring rear suspension, the engineers opted for coil spring trailing arm setup with a pan hard bar. I've averaged 22mpg in the last 11K miles commuting to work in atlanta traffic, this is due to the 8 speed transmission with V6. The best mileage I saw was 26 mpg driving at 70 mph going to Florida, and it takes 87 octane. Now this is not a vehicle I plan on keeping beyond my extended warranty of 75K, mainly because if I do have a failure I dont want to repair it myself, and I won't pay someone else to.

    i have a wrx . its awesome . 200 kw at the wheels on 11 psi . 1200 kg weight . runs 12 sec 1/4 mile . only owes me 6k nzd
btw what do you lot pay for gas ? we pay nzd $ 2.20 for litre of premium ( 98 ron which i think is equal ish to your 93 ish mon ) ?

    3.8 litres to a gallon
    2.2 x 3.8 = 8.3 nzd a gallon
    8.3 nzd = 6.2 dollars a gallon

e85 is even more of a rip here than that

lol any they wonder why i tip toluene in it half the time

Ours has gone up to 2.15 after dropping to 1.90. It will level nack out again around 3 per gallon.

One little part of a refinery blows up and we get the Kali shaft yet again! Our prices have jumped 40-50 cents/gal in the last week.

We are getting butt raped for 3.17-3.40 right now. :banghead:

Here is something to think about and boy will people tell you war stories about how they knew some one who went down this road but here goes

Here at Ajax Auto also Ajax Auto Wrecking We do a lot of new late model rebuilders. What is that? Well we purchase a lot of new late model cars with salvage title, the newer the better. Cars like 2014 or 2015 with light body damage and we repair them and sell at about 1/2 of new. Insurance companies these days total new cars so easy because the custermers who just had a accident says I want a new car or my lawyer will be calling you. We get a lot of cars with under 10,000 miles Heck we just did a few with under 500 miles. I just did a 2014 Focus ST with 26 miles Most cars are hit so little that we can drive them home. We do a lot of trucks for local companies. My local Napa bought 9 rangers last year all with salvage titles. It is a hard sell to the wife but if that is something you might want let me know. We have 2,600 late model cars here and we go to the auction everyday. Let me know what you might want and we can get it for you. We ship world wide so no problem. All our late model cars come with a 3 day 100 pesent money back if not happy followed by a 1 full year warranty on parts and labor. I have been doing this for almost 40 years. Worked at a body shop for 17 Then purchased Ajax 22 years ago. Just about everyone I know is driving one of Ajax Auto cars most with a salvage title All are happy
So if you or anyone needs anything like this let me know. John

Subaru eventually fixed those head gasket problems. I picked up my first Subaru last year for $1000 as a winter beater. Ended up selling my 06 Volvo and using the Subaru for my work, put 30000 miles on it, some dirt bike style. Parked my Nissan truck gas guzzler and hooked a trailer hitch to this thing. 25 mpg pulling a bike is pretty dam good. Missouri is jacked up with snow and ice right now with more coming. From Mark Twain forest last week. Mines the 92 with 200000 miles. My buddy has that 84 wagon with only 55000 miles. Definitely sold of these subarus.
