Just did first 3 day ride on my Lectron 38mm my cr165 and it worked great. First ride had lots of spooging out pipe and seemed a little rich but plug is the nicest tan brown color I ever seen on plug. So next ride day I turned neede half a turn in and right away I could tell it was running alot crisper and about 1/4 the spooging out pipe. This is on short steep hill climbing with fast trails between. Check plug and still a perfect tan brown color. So should I try another 1/4 turn on needle? If I get to lean I take it will start to hestsate on lower throttle if to lean. I have not touched top end needle yet but bike rips hard now and lugs great down low.
It is so easy to do, I would try going another 1/4, and even another until you get lean symptoms.. Hanging idle, lean bog, then go back a 1/4. Plug check it though when you think you are spot on...
My RB mods TMXX 165 is getting 15 mpg!! I ran out of gas at 36 miles at my last enduro, but lucked out in that I was only 50 yards short of the checkpoint. Some course workers helped get me to the gas stop another half mile down the road, so I lost hardly any time. This was the second time I've run out of fuel on my 165, and I have to do something about it. I've been on the fence about whether to do the Lectron or just get an IMS tank. The IMS tank is only another .4 gallon, which at my rate of consumption will get me only another 6 miles. Granted, this would have prevented my running out of fuel at both of the events I mentioned, but I'd much rather get 20+ mpg and burn less 8-dollar-per-gallon avgas premix. Is the 15 mpg somewhat in line with what others have been getting with the 165? I have had float level issues in the past, but they seem to be sorted.
I'll need to go check to see exactly how far out the PJ is. So far, I have left the PJ as delivered and just made the rod adjustment. It's been raining like crazy here since we got back from the ride, so will go dive into it this weekend and see. Something needs to be adjusted though, using that much more fuel and lotta spoogin out of the pipe/silencer connector is not right for sure. What's funny, still pulls like a freight train though in the low end with just that little flat spot in the mid to top transition.
i had lean symptoms as delivered, hanging idle, went a 1/4 richer but i seem to be sucking some pretty good fuel as well. after 1.5hrs of slow/med speed tight stuff, i was surprised i needed to top off the tank, quite a bit was used up. after going richer on the rod, the idle knob had to be turned clockwise another ~1/8 as well so i'm barely ~1 turn out. my PJ is still set as it came. more testing this weekend. i think i will go back to 1/4 leaner on the rod to see if i still get the hanging idle with a fresh filter.
I was getting 20mpg with that carb Dave but not at race pace. I am getting over 30 now with the Lectron at the same pace. Some of that is that the carb isn't pucking gas out under hard breaking on a a steep descent or hard acceleration on a steep climb. JFYI
I haven't measured my 165 fuel consumption with the Lectron, but I know it is really good . On a 50 mile loop there is still quite a bit of fuel in the tank . I think I could go 65 miles plus with with the stock 2.5 gallon WR tank
That does not sound right. You sure your float level is not to high? I get 24-27 MPG EZ with my bike.
I think you mean a 1/4 turn OUT right as that is leaner. I would keep going leaner until you start loosing power or not running right. then back in a little and call it good. This might get you even better milage but as it runs perfect as is you might just leave it.
One thing Kevin said to me when I first got the carb, you cannot make the metering rod too lean such that you'll damage the engine. If you go too lean, it will just run crappy and you'll know you need to go back richer. But for the PJ, that is critical you not set that too lean else on extended periods of WFO, you could cook the rings. Not trying to sound smart a$$, but seems I'm spending as much time getting this guy set up as I do jetting a carb! If I cannot get the mileage up and have it run good, I might just swap back to the Keihin with some JD needles for a comparison. While I can get it to run good, the extra fuel usage is not ideal. Sure it will just require some more fiddling.
If you're that bummed out with it, I'll send you your choice of a RB TMXX or a Keihin AS (I'd give up both but I could just buy another new lectron for that) and you can send me your Lectron :-D I'll need to start monitoring my fuel usage better, but my mpgs are lower as well. I contribute it to the fact that I keep twisting the throttle a lot further now.
all good feedback. thanks. Lots of people simply install and ride. Some need to tweak a little and then ride / forget (me) and some seem to be chasing something. It is still a carb doing a semi complicated function so some are going to struggle. I'm sorry it is not working for you. We are trying to help. If your not satisfied selling it should not be an issue.
I am not bummed, just know it needs to be set up better, assuming I can get it just right and get normal mileage. I want to do the comparo with the Keihin AS simply to see how different it is. Mainly I just want to get the mileage back up to where it is with the Air Striker. Appreciate the help and I will fiddle with it some more this weekend.
This particular enduro was almost all trail at race pace--no transfer sections to speak of. And I was twisting it pretty hard! Soon after getting the '12, I had issues with the float valve. There was a tiny piece of debris that was sticking the valve in a partially open position. It would overflow if I was sitting still for a few minutes, but it would run out of fuel if I rode it hard. I replaced the valve and seat and triple verified the float height, and it's now correct. I have to lean it over past 30 degrees to get any overflow. Part of the poor milage may also be my tendency to leave it a gear or two high and let the EFM work its magic. So it's revving quite a lot more than if the clutch were locked up all the time. Anyhoo, I'm probably going to try one of these Lectrons soon.
I still don't have mine dialed in to where I want it. It seems the tiniest bit lean at idle, but too rich as throttle increases. Top end seems....just okay. Exhaust drools like mad, even worse than with the Mikuni. Float level appears to be okay, but the carb piddles fuel all over the engine cases on every ride. Still no easier to start than with the Mikuni. I have to shut the fuel tap off each time I stop and leave it shut off until I kickstart the darned thing. Maybe lower the float level a tiny bit and richen the the metering rod a quarter turn from where I have it set now.
I also noticed the lection didn't like starting with the peacock turned off even with a full bowl of fuel. I don't like leaving fuel in my carb when I am not sure how long it will be to the next ride. Turn the peacock on the bike fires right up, but turn it off and serious healthy kick was required to get my 300 going. I will turn the fuel on and start it than turn it off and run the bike up and down my street to drain the bowl before storage. I notice the lection is displaying fuel starvation symptoms earlier than other carbs from previous bikes. No big deal since I am draining the carb for storage, especially with all of the ethanol in pump gas these days.
Just talked to another 13 300 owner running a Lectron and he had a VERY similar result as I am seeing with mine. He ended up leaning the Rod 1.5 turns total AND turning in the PJ by .5 of a turn and he is VERY happy now. No more spooge, pulls hard from bottom to top and Plug chops look as should be. I am gonna adjust my rod 3/4 turn more lean (total of 1.5 lean from as delivered) and run my PJ in a .5 turn and then check it from there. Kevin verified my carb was set to PJ out 1.5 turns, so he said as long as I get good plug chops to verify, he sees no reason why that would hurt to lean that in some and that should also up my fuel mileage some. Getting there!
I'm not getting any overflow on my cases on wr300. The fuel height looks perfect in the see thru bowl.
On my 250 i had to lean it out 2-1/4 turns on the rod to get it right. Dont be afraid to lean it out. I found that the PJ effects the mid range also.
