I have a 79 with an identical looking MM series frame number.
I also have the original seat, so I'd be glad take any measurements you need.
BTW, I bought a "black" seat cover off ebay, the guy listed it for an 81, 82, 83?
The seat he pictured looked like mine with the angled up rear, so I bought it.
The cover seems to fit fine, except after I removed the old cover,
I didn't like the condition of my foam and would like to replace it (when I can figure out what to buy).

MY frame has the slide in style as well.

Ron- So your MM 79 series frame also has teh CR style cutoff tube framerail? It must if you have the angled up seats.

So here is the question.... when in production year 79 did they decide to go to the newer 1980 style rear frame with the stops on the CR's ?

And like Ron says..... how can we ( him and I) identify the correct seat foam) for this bike...

    Ron - sending PM

Here's what my MM frame 79 looks like. I also notice mine has the 1980 style chain tensioner.

    Probably no help but......

My 1980 OR 390 had the slide in seat as did my 79 CR 250 to add to the confusion. When I worked at the Husky shop after school in 81-83 helping assemble new bikes we saw alot of "different things". He told me Husky was a small company by motorcycle standards. He said they used up everything and wasted very little. His example was the 81-82 auto's little gas tank. I have a 82 CR 250 that last winter I tore down for a mechanical rebuild. I got the bike from my uncle who had owned it since 85. When I had the bare frame I noticed they had ground off the brake pedal mount for a WR/XC style frame. The rear frame tubes are also 1/2 longer than my other 82 CR 250 frame. It is stamped as a CR but is a late 82 serial number. Use up a XC/WR frame before the 83 change? It doesnt have the under engine tube so who knows. I have looked long and hard for some photo's of my 80 OR 390/420 but haven't found any, I was 15-16 years old and more interested in going than pictures!

maybe this is a leftover 78 79 frame and made with 1980 bits...stranger things have happened,
the 79,s i have use the stud and nut bracket as shown, both the 1980 bikes i have have a slide on bracket.

Well, I'll quit ...tchin about poor fitting seats then... However I think you may be on to something.... Looks like I will be modifying one of these to fit.... powdercoat is cheap..... lets hit it again... more welding.... maybe time to fit up the CRF 450 footpegs and mounts too!

So is the conclusion those of us with 79CR's that have the turned up frame rails, can use an 79, 80, 81, 82 seat foam and covers?

The frame may be a 79 but that swinging arm is off a later model judging by the shock mounts. That swing arm is off an 81 or 82 maybe? Nice bike by the way :)

The guy we bought it from said he was the original owner and bought new.
I noticed the late model chain tensioner, not found on most 79's I've ever seen.
I think its one of those late in the year bikes, that started getting some new 80's stuff, when the 79 pieces were gone.
According to the seller had been sitting in the garage for the last 28 years and its the way he bought it new.
Wer'e just getting started with the resto.

Okay, I think we can put this one to bed.
    Below is my MM Frame 1979 CR390 with a 1983 250XC seat.
    Fits perfectly!
BTW, the front slid in area of the 250XC seat is cracked on this seat, so it sits a little higher than normal up front.
After I figure out a bracket I'm sure the front will come closer to the frame.
So I'm concluding the 1979 thru 1983 seat foam and covers will fit on the 79 CR frame.
The 1984 250WR also pictured does not fit. The 84 uses a plastic tank and the seat is longer by about 1-1/2" inches, so I can rule that one out.
I recall somebody saying the 1980 is a one year one size, so I can't say for sure on that one.
    But here's the pic's.

    Here's the finished seat.
    Used a 81-82 foam with a 81-82 cover on a stock 1979 MM Frame CR390.
    Looks good to me.
