The way that they check exhausts for spark arrestors out here is they have an official poking stick that they (rangers) carry around in a little PVC tube. They whip that thing out and stick it into the tail pipe. If it goes more than a few inches, or goes all the way to the front of the muffler, you get a ticket and get to go home, instead of trail riding. They often check even if you have an approved number on your exhaust.
