i called my dealer and they do not even have the computer in to diagnose the problem. They promised to call Husky and get back to me. I am thinking the plug might be a faster cure, and I put myself on the "now shipping" notify list through their website.
I just saw that BigDog has installed the Booster Plug on his Terra. Go to BigDogAdventures.com to see his install. Evidently it did the trick! Have to remove the red side panels to do it, and I still haven't gotten that down. I pried on the front plastic clip until it felt like something was giving, then I quit. I'll have to gut it up and try harder.
Nice! That seems like a much better solution than dealers dicking around with a new bike and not having proper equipment. I'll wait a week or two to see bigdogs observations then pick one up (once they release it).
I think I will wait a couple of weeks for impressions and for the vendor to make any tweaks, but this even beats the trip to the dealer. I still have to find a local one who has the computer to tune these things. The plug sounds much simpler. I used to think that mine was only dying after i press in the clutch and try to upshift at speed (coming off high revs and stalling). I have attributed my stalls during 1st gear maneuvers to my sloppy clutch work, thinking that the cable-actuated set up needed some getting used to. But after reading others' reports....mine stalls in that situation, as well.
So, I've never owned a modern bike, much less a fuel injected one, until this Terra. With carbies, this is a pretty easy thing to fix by richening the idle circuit with a slightly bigger idle/needle jet. Is it not possible to remap the terra to be slightly more right on the low end of rpms? I understand we're all waiting on the equipment to actually interact with the bike and be able to change things, but is this what that "re-mapping" will ultimately do?
Need the computer to inter face with the "Map" in the motronic module as it is in essence a program. Without that piece of equipment, no real way to do it. Manual adjustments are no longer viable with a few exceptions.
It all became clear to me, I think, in the last day or two: The EPA has clean air mandates that manufacturers must meet. The manufacturers do all sorts of things to meet those requirements, AND deliver reasonable performance under all operating conditions. Running lean reduces emissions, so it's a easy way to meet the requirements. There are federal penalties for altering the bike so it no longer meets emissions. I've never heard of them being enforced against an individual and vendors/dealers etc. use words like 'for off road use only' to get around the legal issue. Husky likely can't do the same for the Terra/Strada, as they are clearly selling a bike which is for on-road use. They can't just do a better map, because it would no longer meet emissions, the EPA may come knocking. Folks that offer tuners for 'off road use' provide a way for customers who are not satisfied with stalling, stumbles, hesitations etc. to make their bike run richer. The risk of federal prosecution lies with the customer/dealer that does the mod, not the tuner vendor, and the feds aren't going to track you down and arrest your for fixing up your Terra/Strada. So, the degenerative case of this is that if you choose to run a stock bike that runs too lean from the factory, you have to put up with the issues. If you happen to get run over as the result of a poorly timed stall, your family can blame the EPA. :-) Hopefully this is all orthogonal to the issue we are seeing with the Terra/Strada, and it's actually something that's not quite right that can be fixed and remain emission friendly. My Strada is my 11th fuel injected bike. None of the others exhibited what the Strada does.
FWIW Big Dog has fitted a booster plug as an initial test dummy... From his account first impressions are pretty positive... Http//:www.bigdogadventures.com Sorry not sure how to post link...
After having my bike retuned via the MOSS computer at the dealer all of my stalling / stumbling / lean running issues were resolved. I highly recommend folks get their dealer involved if there bike isn't running right before they run off and invest in the booster plug. See http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/moss-tool-works-awesome.29435
oh, well. I got mine sorted via the booster plug. The dealer did not have the computer, plus they were far away. A UPS truck and 45 minutes in my garage fixed the issue. The bike lost the hiccup and it has not stalled once, even from a dead cold condition. I have the snowflake flashing on the display, but i can live with the incorrect ambient temp reading.
If at some point you take it in for some other service, you could pull the booster and have them fix it.
Do you mean. you solve the problem just retuned in the MOSS??. Because the problem of stalling is really dangerous, mostly in an crossroads. It happens to me much more than 9 times, unpredictable so i have been able to fall down. I hope MOSS solve it definately.. Next oil change I apply for. mine has already 15.000km
Do yourself a favor and buy a Booster Plug. There are other spoofers like this available. The BP by all accounts works well. The Moss might help some but will not completely fix your stalling problem. We all agree a new F/I bike shouldn't do this but silly emissions and not the greatest dealer support finds us where we are. My Strada was awful and ran exactly as you describe. The BP cured my problems. My bike is much fun now. I wouldn't go back to before. Almost all have had very positive results with these spoofers.
Thanks bigdog, I just purchased the booster plug. Almost got nailed a couple of time at a busy intersection, trying to squeeze into traffic, dead in the road, lucky it was daytime. It's happened 7 or 8 times in less then desirable conditions, two very obvious glitches that Husqvarna needs to address, first is the hesitation and often times dead motor and the other is the plastic number plate holder that has now broken twice buy itself, first time I just collected everything and went home and ordered parts and months later fixed it, 2nd time the Maine license plate was gone, tire ate it, so I've had to purchase all necessary parts, all on a slow boat from China or (Italy) a new license plate @ $7.50, and a new inspection sticker $12.00 plus my time @ $42. The parts ktm-parts.com said are going thru customs this week and will be shipped next week. By then it will be snowing (winter) in Maine and I'll have to wait til next spring, then I'll have time to install my new booster plug. Please someone put a bug in Husqvarna's ear. #1 motor dies, not good someone will get killed #2 number plate holder and the 15 lb plate attachement thingy failed, #3 parts come slower then frozen snot in the middle of February running up hill.
My personal experience: 1) Bought Strada, it was bad. Stalled regularly. Dealer MOSS'd. Never stalled again, still a bit of hesitance below 4k RPM. 2) Bought Terra, it stalled but much, much less. But it wasn't running as good as the Strada. Bought Wuka Plug. It's never stalled again, runs much nicer. Lost about 5 MPG. *** see below 3) Ride them back to back, I prefer the bike with the Wuka, it's just a lot smoother. If my Strada stays in my garage, it too will get a Wuka. I have no experience with the Wuka like products like Booster Plug, the $20 home brew run-it approach, etc. While Wuka worked for me, I have no reason to believe the other's wouldn't.
Thanks Krusell. If I don get it with MOSS retuned, I will probe Wuka. Stalling problem could have caused by changing magneto MARELLI, also by powering too much the bike at high revs
My dealer couldn't do the MOSS update any longer as BMW has removed the TR650 from their programming support . Took matters in hand and did the EVAP removal and installed a PCV instead of the booster plug. No more stalls, idle rpms are dead steady, and bike starts easier and faster now. Not the cheapest or easy route, but it's working for me.
My Strada has stalled 3 times now and each time its tried to throw me sideways, also I do not like the fact that when pulling away sharpish at a junction, needs loads of revs to keep it from stalling! Husqvarna from the uk are rubbbish at sorting issues and don't even have a phone number to contact them, probably would'n get through anyway if they did! I've got an 'Eruption' made up and will fit this Saturday. Sod the warranty who's going to sort out those future issues if they can't be contacted.
