Hey Ebrake. Have you tried a 10 minute tune up? Start her up and let it idle with no throttle until the fan cycles once or twice. Then turn it off. Done. I am told that it "recalibrates the ECU" on these modern bikes. I have found this to help on other bikes (my triumph). You probably already know this... But are you pulling the clutch and lifting the kickstand everytime you try to start up? This is a must. It will kill itself if it detects the kick is down and it's in gear. Had that problem way back when too. Have you watched my SSS Syndrome video to see if your symptoms are similar? http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/strada-struggling-to-start-or-sss-syndrome.34058/ The clutch/gear indicator seems to be the issue 95% of the time with folks having issues starting. Hope this helps.
I hear all kinds of whizzing & wurring when it goes through the startup thing and the tach swings around. Some from the tach, others from various areas around the bike. I think I hear the fuel pump, but there are a lot of noises. Last night on the ride home and again this AM it took 4 stabs at the starter to get it to run. What I have found is that if the bike breaks over about 1500 RPM when it fires, it runs. If it does not break over 1500 it dies and the starter quits. It has a very defined feel of it "pushing through" that range, almost like it is a hard spot. I don’t know if mine is tight valves (only 2200 miles?), a failing starter/circuit or if this is similar to the decompression lever issues the G650GS bikes have/had.
I am not familiar with the engine config. I was snooping the net yesterday and found this site, which may have more info on the workings of this engine. F650.com I signed up because they had a couple of TR650 topics, some were peeps thinking about getting a Terra. From your description, I might lean towards a TPS switch or connection. I'm and getting a sneaking feeling that some of our wiring/switches are lacking. My bike has been ok until I dumped it. It resolved, but only after messing with the wire connection under the seat, by the relays etc. Might be a good idea to pull each connector and use the grease for em.
Sounds like you have a different issue for sure. Mine just did not flat out prime and start. It did die on occasion at an idle. Exactly like someone posted a brief video. Idles fine, than a small spike of 50-100 RPM and then die. Would restart fine. It stopped doing it after I had the Re-cal of the idle circuit done by dealer via MOSS. I wish I could be more helpful. At a glance it sounds like a possible ECU issue. Too lean? Seriously doubt it is tight valves. Get a compression check cold, then one when hot. Should be higher hot, if it's not then could be valves? Keep us posted on what you find regardless and good luck with it. No word yet on Rexxer re-map etc. Anxiously waiting....
I actually haven't done the 10 minute tune up in a while now that you mention it. Thanks for the reminder, I'll do that asap. I have tried to start it in gear on accident before so that is the first thing I checked, so I know it wasn't that the other day. I just looked at the SSS video, I was getting a lot more action while trying to start than his bike was and the way his was acting was way more severe than mine. His clearly seemed electrical while mine seemed more like it just needed a tidbit more gas. Maybe my ecu just had a temporary brain fart and got all confused because I started it up several days cold and immediately putted down the drive, shut it off for 10 mins and the did the same start, immediately putt back up the driveway and shutoff. When the engine is cold I have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS let her idle and for at least 3 minutes before I go anywhere and this was actually the first time I didn't.
Hey man, I totally understand, I had a very similar problem. I am telling you mine acted like it was gas issue after a long ride up to Connecticut, scared the heck out of you. I could keep her running by twisitng the throttle. It was actually the kickstand switch, like in the video. I would offer a challenge. Pull up your kick stand, pull in the clutch and just start her up. See if it won't run on it's own without any additional gas--maybe even let her run a while with the clutch pulled. Then throw down the kick, put it in neutral, and see if she dies. The neutral light/switch on these is incredibly finicky, and it will kill itself if the kickstand is down. It will also tell you if your issue is a gas issue or something related to the SSS.
Hey Next, I forgot to post about how although this is a great fix for the problem you figured out, the only downfall is that you never warm the bike up in N, and wait around the garage or put a helmet on/button up jacket while it is warming up bec the kickstand is up and the clutch has to be pulled. Kinda annoying but it is what it is, at least it runs great now.
Glad it works. I can still find neutral on my bike most of the time once it is started. Glad your bike is starting every time now
Yeah thank you, every time. I can find neutral, just hardly ever a green light when I do, but can't leave the bike to idle because you have to be on it or next to it to hold it upright because the kickstand is up. I guess there is no solution to this yet, so if I want to idle, I can't walk away from it for a few minutes, huh?
Roll it back and forth a bit once you find neutral. That often illuminates my light if it doesn't just pop right on.
Hey Next, I just tried that, and you are lucky your light stays on bec mine def doesn't! lol, well when in N if I reach down with my hand and gently lift up the shifter a millimeter the green will glow solid but as soon as I move my finger it springs back and flicks off. I'll just have to warm it up a few minutes by standing next to it thats all. I was hoping I could idle and have my hands free but dont think that will happen. I'll just wait until I go to the Husky dealer in March. Thank You again, just glad its running fine.
I wonder if the engagement of the switch can be adjusted (move it slightly up or down to better contact whatever it is supposed to when in neutral)?
Not wanting to hijack the thread here, but not finding anything related to my problem (well, a mate's) with a Terra Starter. If I have missed a thread, feel free to smack me and send me hiking over there. I convinced my mate to buy a Husky because wife and I love our Stradas and our friend loves his terra and Strada. Very shortly after purchasing a tr650 Terra with only 11,000km on it, it stopped on him. Landed in a shop that had done the previous setup work to it (power commander and some accessories, etc) He has a fully destroyed starter shaft and idle (ring) gear! Never seen anything this bad from a bike. whole chunk of teeth off the gear and the starter shaft splines are obliterated. Question... is the starter the same as a BMW650? Same with ring gear? I can't imagine why Husky would change it when they did up the motor. Both BMW and Husqvarna are refusing to say. Husqvarna wants several weeks and over $900 for starter alone... sold through KTM of course. Any help or direction to be pointed would be greatly appreciated.
Don't know if it helps but an interchange list of TR650 and BMW 650GS parts can be found in a spreadsheet on the following link. www.f650gs.crossroadz.com.au/Repairs/BMW-Terra.xls
I can confirm that the starter is indeed same as GS650 thumpers. Very quick removal via 2 bolts & connectors. $900 is a joke. I can't comment on the ring gear but logic would dictate they are the same. I know of another bike that behaved similarly. Starter engaged while the motor was running and nothing would shut it down. It ran until the battery drained and everything was smoking hot. A new starter motor & solenoid failed to fix this bike. Our guess is that the wiring harness had been compromised & possibly also the BMSE. Bought as a used demo from an interstate dealer failed to deliver an unmolested bike. It arrived on a truck with different indicators and an ignition switch rotated 180 degrees with a broken steering lock. Surely not the same bike? From BrisVegas?
Yes, bris, but not same bike. This was purchased from a roomie of a friend. Has a power commander, which I told him would be my first suspicion... compromised harness. Metal through the bottom end, so they are flushing it but now he's debating what to do with it... he isn't overly mechanical, so thinking of moving it on once repaired and disclosing what happened & starting with a fresh bike.
Best of luck, such a shame. My mate returned his bike for a refund & bought a DR650. He lost all confidence in the TR, but still would love to have a good one...
