I've done it a few times and don't seem to remember it being an issue. I don't remember have to un bolt the cailper on the rear but maybe. The front I know just drops off with the axel removed.
The trick is to pull the axle out (the wheel will drop slightly) and then slide the whole caliper (with the caliper bracket attached) back and then off the tracks, then flip it over the outside of the swingarm. Done deal You gotta get the caliper out of the way in order to get the 17" wheel past it, unlike a regular dirtbike wheel. Edit: Oh yeah the front... before removing the axle, remove the 2 bolts that attach the caliper bracket to the fork (NOT the bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket) and then wiggle the whole thing off. The wheel will come off easy-as-you-please and then the real fun begins. WoodsChick
Thanks Raj and Woodsy Just came back from the 40 mile round trip to the warehouse to see if I have anything for the front wheel it was 9:30 when I left so all the stores were closed :bonk: The back caliper is on a rail that lets it move only backwards in order to take it completely out The trick is to unbolt the brake line clamp, the one on the rear swing arm That gives you the necessary slack in the line to clear the grove/rail….. Wished I knew that, could have saved my some time The front Ooooooohhhhh the front…….. You need the right tool in order to take the front off….. I thought we where paying attention when people where talking about the front and Motosportz cool replacement bolt but I guess we didn’t :snore: so the front is gona stay there for now, no big deal, it has plenty thread left You live and you learn (and it’s much easier if you actually pay attention every now and then….) BTW Woodsy that’s exactly what I did But I guess it doesn’t matter since I can’t take that wheel off anyway….. Damn it
Since mine is a TE to SM conversion I guess I don't have the same issues. I've had the wheels off several times using both the the TE and SM rims and don't remember anything traumatic about the experience. Of course if saw the equipment that I dismantle and reassemble during the course of the day you'd understand that there is nothing in the motorcycle or automotive world that I find very intimidating.
MW, you didn't get the nifty little tool kit with the bike? Mine came with it. Looks like you got all the advice you needed. Let me know how them tires work out. I am using the Bridg/batlaxe on mine and have no complaints. Well one but it's the same with all, (look out for the white bike line on free right turns) the rear likes to swim.
I prefer (last set and all sets from now on) to run a 160 on the rear of the 610 for a few reasons. 1) Far better tire options 2) It allows me (you may be different) to get better wear from the front tire without the rear running out of contact patch. The 160 does have a more pinched profile but it also allows for a lower lean angle and the ability to really run the snot out of the front tire. I know that no 160 is created equal in size or traction but I have just run , and will be replacing with, a set of Michelin Power One's as the last set was nothing short of amazing in the traction department. It's always a trade off between tread life and traction. One will have you buying tires sooner and the other will have you buying bodywork and visiting the Dr more often. Tires are the only thing between you and the road and if you like to push the envelope on the road great tires are an insurance policy. Please understand that before this I ran several sets of 150's because I wanted to avoid this pinched profile but it was the wear patters I kept getting from the front tire (and advice from others )that pushed me to even try a 160 out back and now I'm sold.
This saga is starting to be comical --> Got the 12mm hax for the front this morning from NAPA Got both tires to the Harley place and they told my that the tube was separated from the valve Oh, and by the way you do have your new tubes with you right…..? ……….Ummmmmm………….no, I don’t So if you guys don’t mind educating my about the tube I’ll be most appreciative And on a side note ; where do you think would be my best bet to source one tomorrow (i.e. a Suzuki dealership, Honda, maybe Cycle Gear???) ? Are there any other surprises that I’m about to find or this is about it for the tire changing segment?
Mr. Palmer All I’ve got with my bike was that one nifty tool You know the one that dose everything One side of it opens the rear axel The other side dose…….umm……….well, I’m not exactly sure what the other side do? What did you get with yours?
Thanks Lurker Between you and Goosedog I might be convinced to experiment with tire sizes Sadly as you can see, right now a higher priority for me would be to figure out where can I buy a copy of The Motorcycles For Morons Guide
Ok, My tool kit that came with the bike from Hall's has the following: 1 Combo axle wrench (like the one Kelly sales) 1 Spark plug socket (like the one Kelly sales) 1 4mm Allen 1 6mm Allen 1 12mm 1 1/2 inch long Allen stub (for right side front axel) 1 Funky round tool with nubs (for left side front axel) 3 open end wrenches-8mm/10mm, 12mm/13mm, 14mm/15mm 1 27mm open end wrench 1 combo socket tool-8mm one side and 10mm other side 1 combo screw driver 1 nifty little pouch (like KTM but Husqvarna) So I was out sweating trying to get the old tire off and getting madder by the second (I always do my own tires) and gave up. Was going to go to a shop and have them do it for me. I walked in the house and noticed it was only 5:45 or so. Grabbed the phone and called Up-tite, my luck George was still there, "George" I say "who replaces tires on the Sumo's or do you do it?" His little laugh and he said "I do." Ok, what's the trick? "break the bead and WD40" he says. Holy Smokes, that tire was off and the new one was on in like 15 minutes. Just as fast as I can do an MX tire once the wheel is off the bike. That man is AMAZING I tell yah. Inter tubes on my bikes are the stock ones, I use baby or talcum powder when I change the tires to keep them pliable. I think in the past 6 years I have only replace two inter tubes on my kids bikes. I always carry one with me on long rides, but its Murphy's Law you know.
Wow, that’s a lot I wonder who scored himself such a nice tool kit with my name on it….? Back to the tube The rear one is separated from the valve so I guess I need that one ? The front is still on Where do you get them if you want it like today? (Suzuki dealer- DRZSM got the same tires, don’t they?) And what kind, are some better then others?
No, just checked the Susite them DRZSMs got the /70 aspect wheel wall as oppose to our /60 wall Anyone? BTW I’m reading this old thread and it looks mighty appealing right about now; http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=5090
I just looked at the original rear tube and it says 140/70-17 So maybe the Suzuki dealer will work after all? Edit; All three of the somewhat local (only an hour away )dealers of Suzuki, Honda and yamaha don’t have it but they can order it…. I’m done with it for now Have a nice weekend people, go ride your bike if you can I’m gona ride my bicycle and make vroom, vroooooom sounds
MW, man, that has gotta suck! Sorry to see you are having trouble with a tube. I really have no idea on were to get one in your neck of the woods, but I would help if I could. Good luck bro.
Thanks for the kind words Mr. Palmer I’m not worried about it too much; there isn’t anywhere interesting to ride this bike close by anyway Besides I believe the universe has checks and balances and I’ve been having entirely too much fun lately so there you go Only reason I wonted it “right now” was because we had bike weekend and the islands are saturated with Harleys and customs and I thought it’ll be nice to represent with a different kind of custom It didn’t meant to be, it’s all good
I hope yah know I was only laughing about the Vroom, Vroom sound you were going to make on your bicycle. I would never laugh at the troubles a member was having. FWIW, I had no TE or SM bike (except for my CRF230F) for 6 weeks waiting for my seats to come back to me. That was very painful. Hope you get it sorted out soon. BTW, What island on the left?
Didn’t think you were , you don’t strike me as one to that anyway The location is on the islands (of NC) The bike is that one on the left (meaning the one in my avatar pic, on the left top of the page….just me been a smart @$$ )
Hey people Am I missing a spacer on the front wheel, right side? (opposite the disc brake) Meaning is there another piece after the green/blue plate Or is that’s how it supposes to be? I have not tighten anything yet but somewhere between the Harley people to the work truck to my van to my garage to my van again to the dirtbike/atv/boat people…. I started to have this sinking feeling that I’m missing something…. Help, Please?
You're OK. that blue/green plate is the outer bearing seal and nothing goes over it. If you're missing a spacer it will be readily apparent because the wheel will float back and forth on the axel. If everything lines up and nothing is binding on the disc brake then go ahead and tighten her all down.
