Interesting problem my 2011 te 310 seems to be Ok when cold but the problem arrives when it is hot - hit the button for a second time and it seems to run over TDC and away she goes - still annoying and any comment much appreciated - valve clearances according to the shop are within spec.

    cheers

I can now say after the last three ride my bike is back up and working as it should. I finally get the battery charged up and have had nothing but smiles since. I was even in a good enough mood to suggest to a buddy that he should buy one which he promptly did.

I am told the "Upgraded" parts are the stock parts, heat treated to make them harder and then titanium nitride (TiN) coated. If these parts are unavailable from Husqvarna, it is very possible to have a shop create these from stock parts.

    Just bought a 2012 TE310.

Is this starter gear issue something I should be concerned about? Bike starts with button or kick start just fine now.
Still in the break in period so i wouldn't expect them to show any wear just yet. I do ride solo in remote wooded areas sometimes and I'd hate to get stranded.

Has anyone had the dealership replace their stock parts with the "upgraded" hardened parts under warranty after developing starting problems?

    700 miles on mine and no starter issues. It starts like a light switch. I make it pretty much a habit to find neutral first ......I ride solo a lot too and am pretty confident in this bike. I am going to upgrade the ECU and injector but that is not an issue of reliability, just gotta have it....;}

It shouldn't leave you stranded, but your right leg may get a kicking workout.

Guess I'm sort of backwards anyway so I won't worry about it.

I always use the kickstart on dirt bikes.Force of habit from riding kick start only KTM's for so many years. Still find myself leaning over to pull the missing choke lever though.
At least it's not a LEFT side kickstarter like my TC, man that took some getting used to! Still have dents in my shin bone from that thing.

Always kind of figured the "magic button" was a backup for starting on a muddy hill or in a bad spot where kicking isn't just a simple driveway affair.

I started experiencing starter trouble around 250 miles on my 2012, TE310. First, only while the bike was hot and by 450 miles all the time. Typical symptoms, motor didn't want to crank past tdc with the button but kicked just fine. Anyway, took the bike to the closest Husky dealer in my area(Tri County Motorsports in Simi Valley) and explained my trouble. I even printed out some of the pages from this thread to give the service department, just to give them a heads up in case they weren't up to speed on the deal. Anyway, they seemed very interested and willing to address the problem under warranty. Long story short, about 2 weeks later, I got a call that my bike was ready. Repair order indicates that the following parts were replaced.

    One way clutch assembly
    Rotor
    Starter
    Starter Gear Kit

Speaking with the service adviser, he seems confident that the problem should be resolved. According to him, Husqvarna is aware of the problem and will only replace all of these parts as a complete "kit" under warranty. Hopefully this means that they have determined the problem and resolved it with these parts. While I won't know if the problem is completely resolved until I get some miles on the new starter stuff, I can say that when cold, it cranks with much more vigor now than it ever has. I have my fingers crossed and will provide updates as I have them.
To this point, I have to say that Tri County Powersports has been very helpful in trying to resolve this problem. I just hope that this fixes it for good.

A few months ago I bought a 2012 TE310 with over 1,000 miles on it. It had already had the starter replaced.
No problems with the starter while I have been riding it until a couple of weeks ago. After a good day of hard riding and plenty of starter use, it would not start a few days later. It would not start using the kick starter. Acted like a bad battery even though it's always on a tender... some turnover then nothing.

Took it to the dealer, and I have a good one, and he adjusted the valves keeping the clearances on the tight side. Starts better now than it ever has... like a light switch as someone above said. Battery was not the problem.

In brief, the tolerances are so tight (to .001s of an inch) in the valve clearances that minor adjustments make a huge difference to starting. The decomp mechanism also plays into this as well, he may have installed a different spring there.

I'll talk to the dealer again and get a better picture, if anyone is interested.
My dealer has worked on enough bikes with starter problems to understand the issues and has developed fixes for them. He says some bikes never seem to have issues, while others have some issues.

    They are good people.
That matches every bit of information that has come my way. Some have issues, some don't. The ones with issues seem particularly problematic i.e. even though parts are replaced, the problem re-occurs.

If anyone sees a pattern, such as a specific fix, which helps the problematic bikes get better - please point it out. I do not have a xlite bike so I've not been following this problem closely.

My 2010 TE250 is way better after tightening the exhaust valve on the decompressor side.

I also, lapped and loctited the flywheel on good and it has been starting perfect ever since.

    Would never E-start hot before.

I suspect the valve adjustment is key....too loose is NG.

After putting about 50 miles of hard riding on the bike, the electric start has performed without a hitch so far. I did call on the button to work under the conditions that previously gave it a fit. Stuck on a rocky, snotty, rutted uphill, stalled, and it cranked and fired with authority.

    So far so good.

Set the left ex clearance at .005" or even .004 ,you check it more often but makes big big difference on elec start ,just try it.BILLF

My 2012 310 electric start has just started playing up, on my 2011 310 which was doing the same thing it was a worn worm gear causing the problem, once that was upgraded no more problems.
So it looks like i need the upgraded worm gear for my 2012.
I would have thought with all the issues of starting with the x-light motors it would have been fixed for 2012, hopefully the 2013's don't have this problem

So my '10 te250 had the hot starter issue, that was under warentee and fixed. Now my '11 te310 has just developed it as well. My 310 is long out of warentee. So now the question is how do I get husky to fix a know issue out of warentee. In the end I'm sure ill end up paying but the big question what part is really broken?

I don't think its going to get fixed until they redesign that bottom end. I really think they sacrificed a lot to get this engine extra light and the e-start is the biggest example. It just doesn't seem to have the "oomph" to conquer the engine compression on a regular basis. Does any other manufacturer use a worm gear style starter setup on their four strokes? It just doesn't seem adequate.
