Yesterday, I tore it all apart, replaced all the seals on the oil pump, and used some gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. After it sat for a little while, I went on a 50-ish mile ride. There was still some seepage, although it was a lot less than it used to be. I was hoping that it was just the process of things getting seated, and it hadn't quite sealed up completely yet. I just checked my oil pump cover this morning, and it appears to be dry. There is no telltale spot of oil on the garage floor, either. Time will tell!
Hey, I didn't make any super-cool-gnarly-extreme riding claims; sorry to dissapoint! For me and my first off-road experience, it sure was fun though. I also didn't have to trek halfway across the state to do it. Good enough for me!
The 630 is geared really high. When mine arrives (any day now)I plan to try cruising on the highway in 5th gear for a bit to check out the suitability. 5th gear with 15/42 is much the same as 6th with 14/47. 14/47 should give a nice spread between the gears and still have a theoretical top speed of 100mph. You can then still pop on the 15t for extended highway use.
I just discovered that my rear tire isn't holding air. I guess it's time to learn how to change my own tires!
So is the transmission the same as the 610? If so, I will go with 14-47. It seems a lot of people using that combo. I'd rather not have to buy a chain, but going up 5 teeth leaves no choice.
Bike finally arrived! Spent several hours putting together and checking things over. No surprises. Fit and finish is excellent. No loose nuts or bolts found. This bike is a replacement for a Suzuki Drz400s I had for 9 years and from first ride impressions, this bike is an overall improvement ! My observations so far: The wide ratio 6 speed is much better than the close ratio 5 speed on the DRZ. However stock gearing is much too high as expected. Bike is much happier running along @ 100kph in 5th than 6th. Looking for more sprockets as I did for the suzuki. The seat is more comfortable, however you still get monkey butt, It just takes longer! Fuel injection is not that impressive. Off idle stumbles and decel popping.Seems really lean. Not an easy fix unless you have a ibeat or similar device. Tried out the suspension over some stutter bumps and a few potholes. Well controlled and smooth ride. Bike handles really well on highway and city streets. The clutch and gear action are excellent as are the brakes. This bike is heavy! Fully fueled it is 20lbs heaver than the DRZ but I knew that already. Engine is smooth. Some vibration felt through the pegs at higher rpm but mirrors remain clear and minor through seat, bars and tank. Power characteristics are good but by no means impressive for it's 57 hp claim. Seems like something is holding it back! Maybe the lean injection system or restrictive exhaust or combination of both. People report these engines need a 1000km or so to loosen up. I hope so! Right now it feels more like mid 40s rather than high 50s hp. The display is adequate. The RPM graph on the right hand side is useless! Had the revs up to 5000 a couple of times and the bar graph lit about 1/3 the way up. Most times it shows 2 or 3 bars. A little green light indicates lights on. The lights are on whenever the engine is running! A distraction more than anything! Overall, I am pleased with the bike. A couple sprockets, a skid plate, some other odds and ends and it should be good to go.
I changed my rear tube tonight. It's the first time I've ever changed my own tire on a motorcycle. Everything went perfectly! You should have seen the OEM tube! The leak was on the seam of an area that looked like it was made up of glued together tube scraps! I also gave Hall's the go-ahead to send me the power up kit. They're telling me that it should richen up the fuel a bit. Hopefully that'll help smooth things out and give it a bit more power.
It's a hair over $40 and includes everything you need to remove the lambda sensor and put the ECU into "race" mode. They tell me I can get by without iBeat without any ill effects. I'm not ready to drop another $300 on one. I'll keep an eye out for a used one.
The ibeat would be nice to try but after you get the the bike dialed in you will probably never need it again! Must be some sitting around that fellows are willing to sell.
My oil pump cover is still leaking. Hall's has new guts on order for me again, including a new cover plate.
Did you read Stroker Ace's input? Did that apply? He is someone that does not post much, but when he does it is usually worth reading.
I sure did. I guess I was hoping the fix to be simple instead of having to go through all that. It looks like I might have to. The upside is that my bike always has fresh oil in it.
I just got my invoice from Hall's. Here's what's on it: 8000A7724 CK HUP Oxygen Sensor Plug 8000A7749 CK HUP Gasket, O2 Sensor Plug 8000A6750 CK HUP Oxygen Sensor Connector
If this next round of oil pump parts doesn't do the trick, I'll see if Hall's will just replace the whole works under warranty (clutch cover, oil pump, seals).
Someone could probably make a cool video game from that vid and make some bucks. I've never ridden with a helmet cam but there must be some technique involved in keeping your head that still when riding.
Have you posted a picture of the oil leak? I'm curious how bad it looks. I went riding with someone and they said "you have an oil leak!" to me, and the only thing I could see was a dirty spot on my engine. I didn't even notice it, nor did it use any oil.
