  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

te310 tires Pirelli Scorpion XC MH???

I had a similar experience with the Pro FIM front on my 610. I really liked it in the softer stuff (NJ sand & loam riding), but one day of riding gravel fire roads and rocky singletrack in PA tore half of the side knobs off. Since I use my bikes in both types of terrain regularly, I can't tolerate a tire that self destructs in rock. Too bad, because the tire was pretty good otherwise.

I have a XCMH rear on my DRZ (Colorado bike), and it's been satisfactory so far. I used it a little bit in Moab and a bunch of miles in baja at the 1000 this year pre-running. It seems pretty tough and hooks up fine. I will note that I'm not super picky about rear tires, as long as they last and hook up ok. I am much pickier about fronts...

Which tire did you use on front in baja?

On my 2011 TE449 I am currently running the Pirelli Scorpion XCMH Rear 140/80-18 and front 80/100-21. Good tire, works well for me all over SoCal, Desert and mountain. Tried the Trials MT43 on my ATK, it just doesn't look right. I like the Knob.

Which tire did you use on front in baja?

AC10 front. I "like" the AC10 for non-racing use, or tough conditions. It hooks up reasonably well (better than most/all other DOT tires, not as good as something like an S12 or MX51), and they wear really well.

My DRZ probably has 500-750 miles or something on it, a hundred or so from Moab and the rest from baja this year, both course miles and some pavement and general riding. There are indicators of when you should flip the front (due to wear), and it's probably not even halfway there yet. I expect to get 2000 miles out of an AC10 front, not being nice to it.

I have an AC10 on my TE610 too. It was on my KDX for 2 hare scrambles, 3 enduros, and at least 5-10 days of trail riding, some rocky and some sandy. Then I switched it over to my TE (wanted something more aggressive on the KDX) and used it for another 2-day dual sport event and another 5 or so trail rides, and I bet the thing is about halfway done. Hard to say what the mileage is, but it's got to be over 1000 easy.

I won't run the AC10 on a bike that is primarily used for racing (like my WR), but it's definitely one of my dual sport / trail riding tires of choice.

Sorry, getting a little off the XCMH topic here, but I figure this ought to be useful to somebody!

THE XCMH rear on my DRZ has the same mileage and use as the AC10, and it's probaly halfway worn. Given how abusive baja can be on tires, I was happy with it. A buddy of mine runs them on his KTM 500 and loves 'em.

Just got home from Ocotillo Wells. First time out there on my Motoz I/T tires. LOVED them. Hooked up like MX51s. The smaller size (110/100/18) was so much fun. Not to small for sand. The 250 MX bikes I was riding with had 100/100/18 on the rear.

Am on my second Husky now, TC449 and a TE 310 previously. Ride pretty much sand, sand and more sand just for something different. Have had a crack at two Finke desert races now in Oz. Have raced both times using the Michelin AC-10 Rears and the Michelin S12 front. Am definately no ledgend at all but, have had no issues at all with the tyres through both races and pre-running. Wear has been excellent and grip, I find to be really good...Another mate put me onto them with the same results for him also. The AC-10 is street rated but the S-12 is not. They do actually make a street tyre now that looks exactly the same as the S-12 front but, I have never tried them on my bikes..... Tyre choice is always a hard one, another mate swear's by his Dunlops and detests Michelins, each to there own hey......Michelin Deserts are very popular for the desert racing over here, alot of the top teams/riders use them.....

Interesting that multiple people have said they run AC10s in the rear. I ran an AC10 rear on my KDX, and it was certainly a decent tire, and hooked up fairly well, but it didn't seem like it was going to last that long. I think they wear even worse than an MX51, and don't hook up as well.

well installed 120/100/18 rear and 80/100/21 front Pirelli Scorpion xcmh tires. So far it has increased the ride height about an inch. Rides nice on the road, and great in the mud. Need to try some sand this weekend. So far I am happy with my choice.

mounted up the new front tire is about 3.5 inches wide knobby to knobby and the rear is 5.1 inches wide knobby to knobby.

The stock Karoo front in the 90/90 size was also 3.5 inches wide. The rear stock Karoo 140 size was about 5.4 inches wide

3-11-13 update. The XCMH tires work great in deep sugar sand. No front end washouts. Rode 14 miles of all deep sand trails and some hardpack. Much better than stock Karoos. Also very stable on the road. Believe it or not the XCMH tires do not have the unbalanced tire wobble at higher speeds like the stock karoos going 55 mph on the road. Maybe it is just a coincidence? Rode 3 hrs and did not fight at all with the bike. The DR350s, my old bike, would have worn me out.

Video of my first ever attempt up Blow Sand Hill on my TE250 with the Pirelli Scorpion Pro FIM. I bogged it at the top as I wasn't sure where I was going, having never been there before. ;-) Rear doesn't seem to be chunking on the rocks like some others have mentioned... but my 250 bike has a lot less power. I had heard it wasn't recommended on big bikes.
Here's the vid of the novice in the sand...
