Cats are fitted to my West Aus bike

Tonight I pulled the right side can off and about 50mm from the forward end is what I presume is the Cat. (click pic below)

I think soon I might drill the rivets out (they look to be Monel pop rivets) and dissasemble the cans (just to make sure they are in good order internally) and hopefully I will not mis-place the cats in my messy garage when it comes time to put them back together again. :D

Well there you go. The distributor is flat out lying to the dealers. Sounds like a great way do do business don't it.

Thanks for that. I have been waiting for someone to tell this dumbass how to do it. I think the bike will run better with them gone...

While unpacking the bike which was delivered in the OEM crate complete with all packaging and labels I was surprised by one of the stickers (removed from showroom bikes). After a couple of enquiries it turns out that the Oz spec TE630 is fully Euro 3 emissions compliant.

That would mean it wont run anything like it should do unless:

-the p/u kit is installed (sensor disconnected and connected to the plug)
-the cat is removed (usually means a new exhaust).

    It´s worth doing!

Mufflers are going to stay. Maybe the cats will go, but only because they act as a dirty great heat sink in the front of the muffler. I'd prefer it if they stayed. Wait and see...

My only real complaint with the way the bike runs so far is the idle is a shade lean, idles low and is inclined to stall. That could be fixed with an iBeat (when it arrives) and bumping the idle speed up a little to the factory spec.

As the engine loosens up with a few miles I'll see what else needs changing - the bike only has 55min and 50km on it. I don't need more power (or noise) from the bike, but mixtures may need to be tidied up a little for driveability.

I am loathe to remove the lambda sensor or make any other significant changes until I am sure of exactly what is going on. To that end I have a new WBO2 unit with multi channel logging on its way (when it arrives - the story of my life!) for this bike.

It's a whole new bike with the lambda sensor removed. I have no other mods and the bike is just fine as it is.

everybodys removed the intake restrictor plate behind air filter too ?
seriously bike should not be sold without power up kit installed, not just because it runs like shit without it, but because being that lean is hard on the motor. don't think your bike will become unreliable because it's been put in "RACE MODE" really thats how it was designed to run.

cat's are quite brittle arn't they? So if you can see them from the end of the pipe you should be able to just smash them and pour them put right?

I didn't ever use the word "unreliable" in the context of the PU mod nor did I ever imply that. In fact the only suggestion that I have made in that direction, without ever saying it, was the question right at the top of the thread in regard to using fuels in a stock bike of lesser octane than that specified in the manual.

Lean mixtures are NOT unreliable or damaging unless it leads to detonation.

If you had read the my comments from the rest of the thread it would put my last post in context. Everything that I have seen so far puts the fuel consumption up by 10-15%. Maybe that does not matter to you, but I can assure you that it does matter to me for where I intend to take this bike.

Re-read the last few lines of my last post. All options are going to be explored...

You'd think so. The success of this approach might depend on what is supporting them.

A hole saw a bit smaller diameter than the muffler and a bit extender will make short work of the cat. It will get most of the cat out and make a nice clean hole. Avaliable at most building or electrical supply stores and can also be rented.

This brings me to another question. What sort of fuel consumption do you guys get from the 630 steady state at say 110kph/70mph on the highway? Assuming that you can keep the right hand under control.[/quote]

I'm from the US and still breaking my sm630 in but so far my first tank I was averaging 32mpg now I"m on my third tank and getting pretty consistant 50mpg. I do a mix of highway and backroads and city riding. My bike is still stock (no pu kit).

I have the power up kit installed. My low fuel light comes on around 100-105 miles. That's with a pretty decent city/highway driving mix. I think it works out to about 45-47 mph. I was getting 50+ pre power up, and when my right hand wasn't so heavy. :)
