I can't see myself running 30+PSI though. If it chunks off then so be it, but for offroad, I'm going to air down to 22 or so unless the bike is loaded down with camping gear.
I feel the front scorp rally digs in on loose surfaces better than any of the above tires listed. It's treated me well on a baja run with lotsa sand, rocks, soft dirt and more sand. It wasn't the most planted feeling on hardpack gravel roads but most knobs I've ever ran were not great on gravel roads. A scorp rally front and mt43 rear would be my preferred go anywhere setup for 10/90 riding. Thanks John. May have to give it a try. Cody
Man, air down to 22 psi? 22 psi is about as high as I ever run. Offroad I run 15-18. Can run even less depending on conditions, but that's the normal range. I am intrigued by the Scorpion Rally, I may have to try that tire. How does it compare to a "really" knobby DOT front tire, like an AC10? That is what I am currently running on my 610, and it works pretty well, although it still gives up a noticeable amount of traction to the non-DOT knobbies I run on the WR (MX51, etc).
I didn't make it clear, but I was referring to the recommended lowest tire pressure of the K60 Scout of 32PS!. I wish I had done enough research to find that out before I bought one. The tire is so stiff to begin with I believe off road traction will be limited even more when run at rock hard pressure.
I must have missed this last post. A 140 size K60 makes a very good rear tire for 50/50. Mefo is the same thing. Johngil pretty much wore one out and it was never an issue. For pure dirt he will switch out to a 606 or mt21 I think. The latter two are better for dirt but wear out twice as fast. A Shinko 705 or Fullbore M40 is another good 50/50 tire, and half the price. Especially the latter, worth a look for a lot of road work. I run them on my Tiger XC, and while they don't last very long, maybe 4-5K miles, they are smooth and provide good traction on and off pavement. Definitely not a knobby type tire though. On the T63 front, as mentioned, the knobs are very short. It makes a really good road tire that will go on dirt, but doesn't have nearly the grip offroad as the other tires with taller knobs. I finally settled on a Michelin Desert front and it's a terrific tire off pavement, but I have not spent any time on road to test it's road manners at hiway speeds. I suspect it will be a bit squirrely at higher speed. I'll have some road time this next weekend at the Death Valley rally, will more than likely have to air up to get any road performance out of it. Hopefully the rubber will firm up with some miles on it, all tires are pretty soft when they're new which gives you that hunting characteristic.
Yep i agree they must be pushing there bikes a lot. My one 610 TE ate the tyre up before 1,000km and i was soft on the throttle as i was running her in The other 610 TE i removed the new tyre and sold it before even riding the bike -- I run the Karoo 2 in front and the Continental TKC's at the rear -- not great km's but very predictable and at least 3 times longer lifespan than the back Karoo2
Just had a Mitas E-09 rear and a Pirelli MT21 front fitted ready for Morocco. Will be interesting to see how they feel as last time I had TKC80's on a KTM450 and hated them.
If Johngil recommends the K60 you can believe it works; the guy flies! I would like to know what presure he runs though. John?????
Me too. I'm going to mount a Mefo Explorer on the rear and a T63 on the front this weekend, though I probably won't be able to get it out for a good ride until the following weekend. I'll also be replacing the brake pads, oil change, etc. It'll be good to get the bike freshened up for the season (though at 4800 miles I'm getting worried about the clutch washers, but my hope is to make it through this season on 'em and then have it out and to Indy during the down time after this season.) By the way (and sorry for including this here in this thread, but it is a quick Q after all.) When replacing brake pads my assumption is that the piston can be pushed back in a bit easily enough (as opposed to newer car calipers, wherein the piston has to rotate as it's pushed back.) Is it indeed a simple push in? Thanks!
You want the 120, that's the biggest cross section available in that tire. It's a big tire, fits the 630 well. Arguably the best dot knobby out there for a dualsport.
Yes, I see both of these online retailers list them, about $97 I would take a 130 if I could get one. www.phatperformanceparts.com www.americanmototire.com
Ended up with 120/90 18 d606 Quite a big tyre Also grabbed a mich desert front Just got to get the bike running to test them out in the desert.
'Not sure what I was thinking, but I have a 130 on the 630 and a 120 on my WRR. 130 is plenty wide enough and looks just right. I wouldn't run a 140 D606 on the TE630 even if it was available.
You should consider the overall tire diameter of the D606 also when making a decision.. 120 - 26.8" 130 - 27.4" http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tire-catalog/off-road-adventure/dual-sport-adventure/d606/
