If you don't already have a tool kit, this is a very nice option. There is only a couple things in it you won't use and then put things you will use in those pockets. I layed it out and checked all my fasteners with this kit!...the ones I could reach with the side panels off anyway. Top quality really nice tools. $119 from TT. CruzTools BMW tool kit. http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/...ools-Roadtech-B1-On-Bike-Toolkit-for-BMW-RTB1 This is a better option than the crescent wrench for your axle nuts and oil plug. Plus you get a tire lever. 24mm box wrench/tire lever combo. Super light too. I forgot to put it in the pic. http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/PN-TL-24/Aluminium-Tire-Lever-with-24mm-box-wrench
Still in AZ but home on Sunday. I'm reading along but it's slow responding via Iphone. Keep up the good work!
My tubing will be in on Monday or Tuesday for the guard. It took OnlineMetals a week to ship tubing they had in stock. I have been designing something that would match the lines of the bike, but in the attached photo the guard looks good, but doesn't match the lines of the bike at all!
Fab, the attachment points on the above pic are what i am thinking of, but the bend, as you say, could be a lot nicer and fit the bike better. Thats what i want to do next CO visit! Amtrak pulling out as I key and on the way home!
I agree on the bends Ken and have something in mind that should be very nice, match the lines of the bike, and have a lot more coverage than the guard above. I was going for light and simple which is why HARDER1 showed us the example, but now I just want solid protection with more coverage. Hope you had a great time in the desert!
This SWMotech product might serve as a blueprint for crashbars. I wonder if they would work with Motospotz skid plate:
Damn, somebody's been readin' my mind! It looks like these attach to the front motor mount, and also to the down strut. The back attachment is perfect, right to the top motor mount. If I can get these any time soon I probably will. 'Couldn't find them on their web site though; probably looking in the wrong place.
Just passing this on. I just took a set of SW-Motech crash guards off of a dinged up 2012 G650GS I got. They did bolt up and with Motosportz skid plate. 2 of the 3 mounts identical. The biggest difference is the front upper mount does not line up with the frame. I was thinking of fabricating a couple of tabs and welding to the frame or making one that bolts to it using the one open hole in the down tube that is right behind it. I really like the looks of the pics /design posted by MArio33 but from experience, would much rather have the front mount attached to something fixed rather than to itself. I will post pics tonite if anyone interested.
Thanks! In the process of ordering a set for me and a set for another Terra owner here in Houston. He intendes to ride his to the Arctic circle and across Canada this summer, a 21,000 mile trip. Hellova good test for the Terra. He is also trying to find someone in Canada to do his 6K valve adjustment. I believe he will be going up thru the Kamloops area and wants to do it in Canada without having to double back to Washington state for one of the Husky dealers there. Hasn't found anyone yet up there to do the work.
All, Just called Twisted Throttle, importers for SW-Mototech. Talked to rep and he is checking but said he thinks he can get these and the bag mounts for me. Will post reply....
I already have mounts for my Wolfman Bags, but I wonder if the SW Motech racks could be modified for the Wolfman by adding loops for their buckles. 'Bet so! I really like the racks that Fab and I made, but for those who don't have the facilities, the SWM racks and soft luggage might be the way to go. Hard cases are fine for the road, but don't survive well in the dirt. Of course, if you don't plan on getting dirty, going hard isn't a bad way to go. Not for me though. I plan on getting mine down in the dust and mud on occasion. I didn't notice, but I wonder if the racks are aluminum or steel. Either way, soft bags could be fitted with a little, maybe very little, work.
That thing looks stout! The first option to the market (I think) is a good one for you guys! Toyboy, if you decide to keep those GS guards, welding a bracket to that front frame section is a good idea. Those look pretty good from what I can see. Ken, looks your home safe and all settled in. I did not realize that was a 21,000 mile trip your friend is taking. I hope he puts a ride report somewhere.
I hope so too. His plan is to be on the road for 80 days. Darn, and I thought taking 60 days this summer was going to be special? Well, it is! I need to get a look at that COBDR video somehow. Hope the entire group makes the commitment and shares the ride with us. Let's discuss our route soon. Do you think the stock Terra rear tire will be OK now that you've seen the video? I'll have a better idea of how the Michelin performs by the time I finish Death Valley next month. I definitely want the front crash bars on by then as the silt and sand can be problematic on a heavy DS.
I will send you the video tomorrow when I get home. I would be nervous about running the Sahara rear tire, but you can make that call after you watch it. Edit: Let's put it this way.....If you want to eat my dust on the whole trip, go ahead and run that Sahara!. I am excited that someone actually put a good crash bar on the market. Can't wait for some posted pics of some of the Terra's here on HuskyCafe with those on!
