Dunlop 908rr are real expensive here in Oz. They are usually more than twice the price of the D606. Sure the d908rr will do 30% more miles but they don't handle or bite as well as the D606. I did try a well used 908 (5mm tread left) that came off my R1200GS on my Terra which srubbed out pretty hard and is also why I have not used a d606 on the Terra yet. My current front tyre is a Michelin Starcross HP4 and hope to throw a new D606 130/90 r18 on the rear after getting the suspension sorted as they are even taller than the d908rr. So for those that have fitted the d908rr how hard do they scub out? I think this is too much for a half worn out tyre.
Scrubbing? . I have zero scrubbing. The 606 is a great choice I think. I have never run one, but it gets great reviews from TR/DR/KLR owners.
I understand your concern. Even when my suspension was too soft, it wasn't a problem. I have had the bike way loaded down and in the air with this set up. But I can't ever recall bottoming the rear…only the front.
Can you tell me how long was the life distance(miles/kilometer) of TE650 terra basic(metzeler sahara enduro 3) tires? Which kind of terrain? What was your ride style? Do you thing can I do with metzeler sahara enduro 3 about 10000miles/16.000km at touring: max 100km/h 62mph on highway and dirt roads through deserts?
I used D606's on my DRZ (front and back) for 5 years. Great traction and a very reliable tire. I never got more than 3K out of rear tire though. But, I got nearly twice that out of a front tire if I reversed it as the tread blocks started showing wear. I tend to pack fairly heavy for camping and my trip for 2014 will be 14 days of camping so extra food will be going along. With the heavier bike I'm not sure what to expect but that is the tire going on my trip in September. I wish it came in a 140 rear but 130 will do.
I've done 5000km so far on original tyres and very little wear. I suspect 10000km is possible. Of the 5000, 4000 road at 110kph, solo with little luggage. Max 100kg total weight rider and gear. 1000km off road has been dry dirt, rock and sand. Not going hard off road, just trail riding with mates on BMW GSs. Hope that helps? Your trip sounds good! I'm at 9500 miles on my rear sahara, Im guessing I have another 2500 miles before its gone. My riding is about 65/35 pavement/gravel. I'm not super aggressive but I'm not no slow poke either. I swapped out my front to a TKC80 at about 3000 mile for better grip in the gravel and it almost looks new.
I have 4000 miles so far on my stock tires . 2000 off road in Utah, loaded with gear, and the rest 40/60 around eastern PA. At this point the back is done for off-road, however I think I could leave it on another 1000 miles . The front "looks" like new however it's worn at least half way through the knobs , very even.
I understand ammonia could be a problem with non anodized wheels but I have used windex many times on modern hard anodized rims with no ill effects.
Where are you going ? Africa ? Mid-Asia ? Nevertheless I wouldnt risk going that far on 1set of tires, predominantly road-biased. I believe you need additional knobbly tire (at least rear), no matter what mileage you would get. Just to stay running if sth unexpected happens (large puncture, damaged carcass etc).
Has anyone tried the 140/80/18 Motoz Tractionator Desert H/T? I know they're for Desert Terrain. But are they ok in mud and muck on occasion?

I think I will try to keep my tires on the roads and try to be not too fast. I like the Dunlop 908RR's. They are big $$ bucks. If you can get past that, they are one hell of a race tire. Kurt Caselli had one on his Baja 1000 race bike this year. Ty Davis and Alexander Smith both love this tire, it is very hard working and reliable. Most desert tires have the knobs too close and will not grab sand are horrible in the mud. This tire paddles right on throught. I have seen these on everything from 400cc to 1100cc.
In case of 17' K60s, its a fair question regarding sizing, due to differencies in thread pattern (see below). For more dirt bias I would use 130/80-17, for more pavement - 140.
I put the Motoz Tractionators Deseet H/T on my Terra front and rear... The front wobbled for 600 miles. And I now have a comfortable *on pavement* top speed of around 70. The bike wouldn't go over 60 m.p.h. without a wobble in the front but now they are a little better. I mostly use the Terra for gravel roads around here and some pavement. On gravel they are great. Such an improvement over the stock tires. But... I will not put on another set due to the limited top end m.p.h. on pavement.
I've found that if I can sit on the rear seat or have a load on the rear I can go as fast as I want. I have installed a stabilizer that helped me a ton, but before that if I was covering pavement I was on the back seat.
OEM Metzler rear, smoked at 5500k's, put another one on, its half smoked at less than 2000ks...not good. Put a Dunny 606 on front so far its done 6800ks, maybe good for another 1000. So thinking Dunny 606 for the rear next. 70% road @ 100-110kph, 30% gravel roads....maybe I'm a bit heavy on the wrist .
OEM METZELER FRONT only 17.500km no grip at all. OEM , metzeler rear still on use 20.000km maybe 2.000km left . 20% dirt 80% tarmac.. now TW301 trailwing front. much better rideing on dirt.
