It sounds like a few people have reached out to the seller(s) on Ebay. I really hope you get some good news soon.

I saw their post on FB or ADVrider and saw that they had gotten confirmation about them not being the same. I did just see that one of the auctions for the bottom ended with it being sold so I'm guess they purchased it. I too have bought from that seller and had a good experience.

thanks. payment is made thanks to a very good friends in Belgium. it is amazing how many people have offered their help, both here in Iran and in the rest of the world.
Next task will be to get the bike into a country where it is not entered into the passport. Bulgaria is probably the best option, but still a long way from tehran.

Good news, everyone. The engine is running again. A newly locally produced crank shaft pin replaced the damaged one. Bike is on the road again.
But the valves need some attention now. Which type/size shims do I need? Does anyone have a link where I could get a set for a reasonable price? Preferably in Europe for shipping convenience.
I don't know yet which ones I'll need and we are now on a tighter schedule so I'll need to be able to just pick suitable ones from a set as soon as I get the chance to work on it outside of Iran.

Call me an idiot but unless the piston hit the valves when the pin and bearing let go then you shouldn't need to re valve clearance check.
And if it did then new valves and piston will be on the cards. Confused.com.

Congrats on the new pin and getting the crank trued.
If the valves are tight then you can juggle the shims usually then get it ground down to correct clearance. If the gaps to large then you will require new shims wich I imagine are a common size.
The shop you got the pin made at should be able to fabricate some for you.. no?

We have all the parts now and are building over the second hand bottom end here at motocamp Bulgaria. But there are still some challenges: we need to undo the main clutch bolt.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to do that without the special bmw tool and without damaging the clutch basket?

Get an impact driver preferably air powered as they sound the best.
with the plates in the basket still flatten out the lock washer and put a clean rag around the basket so you don't rip your hand to shreds if it catches, press the clutch down and rattle that sticker off.

Or if you have spare clutch plates then get two friction and one non then either mini g clamp them or drill and bolt them together.
Then drop a penny between the gear on clutch and primary shaft insert your lovely bodged tool and in screw.

P.s. that is if it's a traditional screw type nut that's holding on the clutch hub.

the adventure does not seem to end. I rebuilt the engine with the second hand bottom end from eBay back at motocamp bulgaria. That was already exciting enough in itself as I am not really a mechanic, so I learned as I went along.
But yesterday evening we were enjoying some turkish pide and tea near the Bosphor bridge when the military attempted a coup. Made it safely back to our friend's house though, but not without sneakily running a police blockade...

plenty of adventure indeed. and despite all the stress in Iran because of the engine trouble we met so many wonderful people that we think back of it very fondly now.
The Turkish coup was just a big storm in a small glass of water.
Nothing on this trip went according to plan so far, but we are still having fun and are making lots of new friends.
