I LOVE these ProGrips! Don't remember what model they are, though. No blisters since installing them even after the D100. Plus the Dupuytren's Disease knots on my palms aren't as annoying with these grips. Stockers tore my hands up and just plain hurt to hold.
10 people, 10 differrent answers. Grips are such a personal preference item that it is hard to go off of other peoples likes. I tried the pillow tops and really liked them, except that on the track I had problems with them getting caught on the palm of my gloves and giving me some very scary moments. I love the ODI bolt on grips in half waffle pattern. The old style KTM and Husky Dominos have always been good, now available under the MSR brand name. Just getting ready to take the Pro Grip 714 rallys (like above) off the DS bike, way too big. Next up are some Oury road grips on the dual sport bike to see if they help with vibration some.
Rather than start a new thread, I am going to dig this one back up. I am looking for recommendations of grips to try. On my WR300, I have just about worn out the stock grips, and I am looking for a replacement. I liked the stock grips, reasonably tacky without being too squishy. However, I'd be interested to hear about alternatives. On my 610, I used some standard Fly Racing half waffles, they worked fine but were on the thinner side and not super tacky. I have ridden a friend's bike with pillow tops, and they were certainly cushy but I'm not sure if I would like them for racing. I just put Tag Cradle (medium) grips on my 610, they seem nice but I have not ridden it yet. They are a little bit thicker than standard grips without being super squishy, seems promising. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/709/31705/Tag-Cradle-Medium-Compound-Grips I have a set of Scott MX2 grips (the standard/generic half waffle) and Scott SXII (raised diamond, no waffle). I've never run non-waffle (or half-waffle) grips, but I think I might try the SXIIs and see how they work... I will also report back on the TAG Cradles!
In all the replies, I haven't seen the grips from Risk Racing talked about. I've put them on 4 different machines, and just installed on my new bike. They are, to me, the best for me. They don't come off, get loose, and are a dual compound with allowance for your thumb. They get my recommendation. See more at riskracing.com for Fusion MX Grips.
I think it was this thread that got me started using pillow tops and have switched most of the bikes over. I have grip heaters on my 610 and the pillow top lites work well because they are thinner.
How do the lites compare to the regular pillow tops? I wonder if the lites would work well for me, the main thing I was worried about after riding my buddy's bike was the "squishyness" of the pillow tops. Thanks for the feedback guys!
ODIs all the way! They now have a new grip type called the Rogue in addition to their half-waffle pattern. Also the new Emig grips are made by ODI. NO MORE GRIP GLUE or SAFETY WIRE. You lock em on with an allen screw. Plus if you mess up a grip in a crash, the new one takes about 2 minutes to replace. Just MHO
Pillow tops seemed to give me arm pump. I guess I can never get a firm grip with them and just keep squeezing them until my arms pump up. I've been using Pro Grip 788 for a long time, but I just got a set of Renthal Kevlar taper grip to try on my YZ. Since I got a new set of Renthal twin walls for it, I thought I'd give the grips a try. I can always go back to the 788's if I don't like them.
I've developed mild arthritis in my hands and always have some part of my hands hurting( I'm a plumber and use wrenches on a daily basis). Pillow tops eventually start to hurt my hands. I'm able to feel every bump, and then starts killing my hands. The spider grips are one of the only kind that won't begin to bug my hands. I purchased a msr handlebar for my crf100 a couple years ago that came with grips just like the orange pro grip ones in the above post. Those grips were very comfy for my arthritic hands. Like everyone else says, grips are personal preference, but if your hands are your money makers, choose wisely. Sucks when your hands can't grip a wrench for a few days!
I'm a horseshoer for 35 years and my hands have taken a beating using nippers, knife, hammer and tongs. I have the same pains you do. You might want to consider Flexx Bars. I can hardly ride without them and can see the difference when I ride a bike without them. I raced my '82 250WR in a vintage HS last year, with regular Renthal bars and my hand were killing me after. I rode my snowmobile without them this Winter and the same thing. I ride my bikes with them and hands don't hurt as much. I'm putting them on everything this year. They are not cheap, but if I can't work because my hands hurt, it costs more. Domino dual compound, like the OEM Husky ones are my favorite. They are the OEM grip on Husaberg and White Huskys too. They are available unbranded, from Domino in a few different colors.
I've deffinately thought about the flex bars. That's good to hear from someone with the same kind of hand issues. Thank you.
Renthal Kevlar firm compound, they are very thin and I have no arm pump. The stock grips gave me blisters and 25 miles of arm pump.
Pillow tops with 2 layers of tennis grip tape wrapped around the bars underneath. Nice and fat for big hands.
I just installed a set of the Progrip 798 MX RVGS Gel grips. I like them so far and this weekend at the MTDR event will be the true test. I like pillow tops but they tear up after a couple hard rides in my case at least. I am particularly hard on grips for some reason. Might have something to do with my size?
