And yea oil debate get heated but as long as your concerned it is a good thing, it is the guy that runs oil till it's sludge and wonders why his engine siezed that amazes me. Like others have said modern oils are good just the upkeep that counts the most. Sorry ramble...
I have been running Motul 7100 20w-50. Actually changed it today, the oil had 1900 miles on it, but thats as far as I wanted to go. (no I haven't run an analysis) $11.25 a liter at the local kawa dealer. Magnet had a little sludge, but not much, very few flakes in the filter.
Any name brand oil will be fine Seems pretty clear from reading through this thread and learning about all the different grades and brands of oil used that any good quality oil will preform well in the Husky. I use Shell Rotella 5w-40 syn.
For those of you using Rotella T, Which one do you use? They now make three types...Totella T, T5, and T6 T is dino T5 is a blend T6 is synthetic. Anyone have any input as to the type?
Hi Rattletrap, I was just wondering if 1900 miles between oil changes is a bit long. I know its a 610 and less stressed than a 450/510 but most of us in the 450/510's change oil between 200 and 500 miles. Just wondering. Maybe we are changing too often. Perhaps we are too caught up in the change oil regularly hysteria. Or maybe you are just lucky. Be intereted to hear your and others thoughts.
My dealer told me to change my oil at 250 miles, then again at 1,000 miles, and then bring it to him at 2,000 miles for the next oil change and service. I'm going with his recommendations.
Owner manual states changing every 3000 miles. Would I go that long? No. I try to change it between 1500 and 2000 miles or so. The bikes got almost 6000 miles on it now. Most of the time I'm not to hard on it, mostly forestry roads and I only sometimes get above 5500, 6000 rpms. This last oil was the hardest I had run. I had hooked up with a couple of wee strom 650's. These guys run on their off days from daylight to dark, mostly secondary paved roads. We had run late and the trip home was 150 miles of interstate running between 70 and 90 mph. Of course the bike did great as usual even inpressing the pavement pounders. On most of the bikes I've had when its getting close to time for changing the oil, the shifting will get a little notchy, but this bike has never done this. Anyway I dumped the oil the next day thinking how I had hammered it the day before, but the oil didn't look to bad, only slightly cloudy. As I said in the earlier post only a small amount of sludge on the drain plug and a couple of flakes in the filter. This bike doesen't seem to be to bad on oil. Of course this is only the 3rd 4 stroke I've owned, I had an early 80 something XR 500 and an 07 KLR 650 both which I despised. Kept the XR (Red Pig) for 2 weeks so I never changed the oil, traded it in a a Honda CR 250. The KLR was well, a KLR what can I say. (Fatter Black Pig) Maybe I should run an oil analysis on the oil I have in now. Maybe I am running it too long, only one way to find out I guess. Just hate to fork out the $30 to $50 bucks on it, but I have thought about it.
2000 miles is way too long I dump mine between 500-700 miles and use the old stuff in my mowers. The oil is the life blood and I would gladdly spend a bit more and keep it clean and top notch.......I mean it is love, me and this bike
I understand, but I paid almost twice as much for my lawnmower as I did for the Husky. Did I mention how much I hate cutting grass? I wanted more time to ride.
Many thanks for your comments Rattletrap. If the 610 manual says 3000 miles then 1900 is not pushing the envelope. I guess they are quite different in design specs and intended use to a 450/510, thereby giving a prolonged oil life. Ciao.
FYI: T6 is not a true synthetic. It's a Group III oil. True synthetics are Group IV & V oils, or Ester based oils.
I'm guessing he uses MOTUL OIL 300V 15W50 SYNESTR 4L just like he tells the people that buy their motorcycles from him.
In case anyone was interested, I found the printout I was referring to above. Here it is: In case it's not readable, I'll quote the key points here: "The new generation DOHC Husqvarna engines as fitted in the TE/TC and SMR ranges have a very speicific oil requipment - 10W60." "The SOHC engines as fitted to the SM610, TE610 and SM570R do not require 10W60 but rely on the more readily available 10W50."
My shop told me that Castrol Actevo X-Tra 4 Toffroad 10W-40 will work good in the bike. My bike runs grate.
That's funny cause the manual from my 2010 Te510 specifically mentions a 10W-50 oil. 10W-60 is nowhere to be found in the my Husky manual.
Lately I have been using Silkolene PRO-4 10W-50 ester based oil, but sometime I use Belray EXS 10W-50. Whatever I can find for the cheapest price. I refuse to pay Motorex prices. I might even give Mobile-1 Red Cap 10W50 a try since it fits the specs and is not energy conserving and is about $7 per quart at WallyWorld.
I can't recall the website that I read it on, but....I believe that even though Mobil didn't get the 15w-40 certified for the starburst symbol, it does have the friction modifiers that are not supposed to be used with wet-clutch trannys. I remember a big thread on just that several years ago on a Honda street bike list.
