  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What's the size of the hex bolt on front axle? 09 txc450

I hated having the allen front axel nut. The allen tool was a 1/2 in socket 12mm,which I had to reduce to 3/8 then reduced to 1/4in to fit my fannypack socket kit.I ordered the new front axel nut and saved myself a lot of weight and headache.

The 12mm bolt with 2 nuts jammed and red loctited on the bolt works like a charm.

i couldn't find 2 nuts to jam together on mine, so i got even more getto. I took an 8mm allen key, and put it in there, then shoved a big flatblade screwdriver in and tapped it with a mallet to make sure it was snug, then turned the allen key and the bolt loosened easily.

I don't tighten very tight on reassembly. once you tighten the pinch bolts, that axle nut isn't going anywhere, so it doesn't need to be cranked down.

I'll eventually get a more sensible axle nut, but at least now i know i can get it off even with normal carry-along tools (substitute a rock in place of the mallet).

correct, it does nothing but snug the axle to one side, the pinch bolts hold the axle. You could ride the bike without it if you had to.

Hex set for $15. Could not find 12 mm at any store...Sears, autoparts, hardware etc.

Except for in the first page of this thread, that is. ;)

Chill out and go to your local Harbor Freight, they have an allen socket set that comes with a 12, 14 and 17(great if you have an old VW:lol:) and it's $12.

I think Harbor freight is largely junk, but this kind of stuff is hard to screw up.

Heres a link to it, it should be available in your local store, was at mine.

That's what I intended to do, but I checked all over and could not find a bolt or nut that was the right size, and I checked every bin in three different hardware stores. They're apparently harder to find than 12mm hex wrenches, which I got at Sears for $6.99 as I recall.
