I got one too. It's a Spitfire Sport Shield and think I remember Bill charging $80 and installed as part of the bike purchase. I removed the graphics material and replaced it with a Husky sticker for $4 bucks. It's been a nice little shield and the only thing I've done was put some loctite on the handlebar fasteners...one wanted to keep backing out over the course of a few hundred miles.
Agree Agree with that, for my size got a bit of buffeting over 100 k, so put on some not so barn door mirrors I had and now have clean air on the helmet and not much pressure on the chest, good IMO.
I build my two windshilds of some polycarbonat laying in my garage. Works well and the bigger one is easy to temporary mount and removes a lot of wind from my chest and sholders. Not good loking but it works fine.
What? its looks awesome. I would use different hardware. How much to make the blank and mail me one? Thanks
It does look good, I'm thinking about trying to make one and heat gun a flip at the top. I have a factory tall now. It helps on the chest. I did a 1300 mile ride acouple weeks ago and the biggest concern was my butt. Dame that seat!
Ar Airhawk seat cushion. Greatest touring accessory ever made. I get a sore tailbone on long runs without it. Cheers
Sorry but i don't have time to make anotherone right now and i don't know if it's worth shiping it from sweden where i live
Any updates? Anyone else find one they like? I am not the type to make my own BTW. I don’t like big shields, I have always preferred to go with the smallest shield that does the job. Just enough to take the wind load off my chest but keep my helmet in clear air. The Spitfire type shield seem too tall to me (dirty air at the helmet), but I am just not sure if the OEM accessory shield will be "enough" I am 6'-6" and 260 lbs with a tall seat installed.
Just got a package in the mail back from Palmer Products UK. They used my cowling for a prototype to mount their multi adjustable brackets. Idea being not only numerous options of adjustability. But the relief offered by the brackets raises the screen from the cowling to void negative airspace behind the screen. Hopefully get it on the bike by sunday and post some pics.
Sounds like it's similar to the brackets Madstadd make for bike windshield (but not for the TR650 yet). My DL1000 has terrible buffetting behind the stock windshield because of the design and the adjustable bracket which lets air behind the screen makes an amazingly good difference. Raising the factory high windshield a bit and tilting it back a touch might be just the tweak the terra needs.
HuskyDude, well, not sure just how tantalizing these pics will be. Sure don't do this thing justice. But here's a couple to wet the appetite. Really hard to see in these shots just how much adjustments up for grabs. No measure at hand, but i'd say roughly provides 2" of float from the cowling. About 2" adjustability up and down. Then for and aft/tilt a good inch or so. The main brackets are stainless powder coated in black. Nice fat nobs for easy adjustment on the fly. Screen roughly 16" overall and about 14" at the widest point. Thing has a really sweet profile and overall superbly engineered and looks the dogs bollox! Hope to get my bike back from the shop tomorrow. But a big work weekend ahead, so not sure if i'll even get to it, but will post once it's on and been tested.......can't wait!
Yeah i wrote both to Madstad and Palmer Products UK and basically Palmer responded first. I've seen a set of Madstad brackets, they're probably more slimline in design, but not sure they offer the same range of adjustment. Where the screen mounts to the brackets i can even eek out anther inch in height if needed with various mounting holes. If this thing works as good as it looks i'll be one happy camper. Really nice clean solid build. I have a suspicion High Five worked something out with Madstad and may actually be using one on his Terra?
Mounted the universal Palmer brackets http://www.palmerproducts.co.uk/ on my Terra a couple of weeks ago, using a 16" Powerbronze windshield that I had on the shelf. Did an 800 mile ride mixed freeway, highway and dirt roads with the Palmer brackets installed. Awesome, no more buffeting at 80mph adjusted up and forward and plenty of airflow adjusted down and back for slow riding. Should be working great for winter riding here in the PNW.
I had all sorts of cool windshield ideas in mind for my TR. A little background on me. I had never had a bike with a windshield until we got a Ural. Then my Bonnie got a windshield. I liked it so much, I just had to put on on my TR. But I haven't gotten around to it yet, and I'm glad. I just rode 300 miles of superslab. I started out in the mid 90's, and half way into it switched to torrential downpours. It changed my mind on the windshield complete. For a skinny 5'9" dude, this bike does GREAT at high speeds without a windshield. I have a good supply of clean air around me, without much buffeting at all. The rain was really only hitting me on and above the shoulders, which is a good sign that things are working right. I think I'll stay stock for the time being. However, if I were over 6ft tall, I might think differently. I'm not saying anyone is wrong for installing a windshield. I just feel that I ought to add this to the thread in case someone of a similar build has questions.
In many ways i also found the TR to be pretty comfortable unscreened. What i'm not crazy about is strong winds. We've seen a very progressive increase in wind velocity and consistency in the bay area of later years. I was also on the fence with this, and didn't care to invest a chunk of change trying to find what does or doesn't work. Lain Palmer of Palmer Products was generous enough to offer this complete setup at no charge besides postage to UK for my cowling. I just fitted the thing about an hour ago, sadly no test ride just yet. But must say this thing sits just where i want it to. Considering he didn't have a Terra on hand to work from, the man did a fabulous job of sizing and profiling all sweeps and radius's.........it's the cats meooooow! (IMHO)
I'm 5' 8 1/2" and (that 1/2" is very important to me ) I do most of my riding in late fall, winter and early spring here in the PNW, since my summer/fall is pretty busy doing AG work. 5-6 hour rides in pouring rain with 40ish degrees or less are not uncommon for us here, may it be for just running errands, day rides or heading south for more temperate riding conditions and some well deserved vaca. A good windshield setup with heated grips and heated gear is a game changer in these conditions. Even in summer a good windshield will keep the bugs off your teeth. Running 75mph for extended period of time on the Interstate (what the Terra/Strada is very capable off) is very tiresome without any wind protection after a few hours for me. My 16" Powerbronze windshield and the adjustable Palmer Brackets are just perfect for my requirements, keeping the pressure off my arms, shoulders and head. I feel good even doing a 400+ mile day. To each there own.
Hansi, do you have some shots of that screen mounted closer up? Looks like a nice shape and from that angle at least looks great
