  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

A friend of mine has just become the UK distributor. I'll find out prices and let you know if you cant get them in the US.

Thanks brock. That would be great.

Am I missing something? What is the difference between the Turntech/Ebattery compared to the Super-B besides the plastic case?

Both Lithium technology. Not sure if they vary after that. The most common Lithiums are lithium ion batterys. These are lithium sulfide batteries, IIRC. Lots of technical uses. Probably cheaper than the ion types.

I ordered the 5 ah Turntech for $130. I don't think the case is much of an issue for a 1 # unit (besides they're even LIGHTER without that case...). These are wrapped like a lot of cordless phone batteries are and when you put them in the bike you can put a little foam or other protection around them when you strap them in.. Might get the small one and carry it on me for a spare. :D

I tried out the turntech battery in my 08 250 txc with the athena 300 kit this weekend and it worked great no issues with starting or restarting as happens with me. It seems to start faster than with the stock battery and there is certainly more room in the airbox now.

What size did you get? I got the 2.5 in the mail today, going to put it in this evening.

Later,

Are using the 2.5 for your 08 TE 450?

It cranks over the 450 no problem but just don't know for how long on a trail ride. I hear there are people on ktmtalk using the 2.5 on 450's with no problems. When you hold the two in your hands you won't believe how much high weight you are losing. I ordered it on a Tuesday and got it on a Thursday, good stuff.

I just pulled the trigger on the 5. I'd be pushing my luck with a 2.5 the way I ride:busted: My seats tearing up the top center area of my Yuasa anyway so this is good timing! Glad this thread came about, I had no idea these batteries existed till a couple days ago.

I did the 2.5 in the '08 TE 450. I read his comments on turntech and my bike passed all of his questions. I did not get to ride it this weekend like I hoped. Like I said before I have started/stopped it a bunch of times at my house and it has done excellent there. CB250TXC also has the 2.5 and that is who told me about them. You can actually feel the difference in weight moving the bike from side to side with the bars. At least it feels that way to me.

Let me know when you get yours so I can see it...hopefully by this Saturday!

How's the thing work?

David

It works great, cranks the bike over faster than the stock battery.

I haven't talked to them about lights though, may have to swap back to the stock battery for night rides.

I just wanted to report back about this Turntech battery. I have ridden the bike about 3 weeks and this 2.5 battery works like a charm. It is on a 2008 TE 450 and I really think it starts the bike better than the stock battery. I have ridden the ugly stuff with stalling and it always has enough juice to fire the bike. It is so much lighter than a stock one I highly recommend this battery.

Thanks for the reminder rasrx251,

Got my 5 ah a couple weeks ago and have been completely satisfied with its performance and lighter weight. The terminals stick up a little higher than I expected and will rub the bottom of the seat if care is not taken to center the battery during installation. It does spin the engine faster than the stock battery, which I hadn't noticed until being away from the bike a week then cranking it. Definitely faster. One thing I haven't considered is how do I charge the thing outside of using the bike? Will a standard NAPA car batter charger or even a battery tender work? I have a feeling they won't........

Instructions say regular charging like a car battery. I'd just put it on either a trickle charge or 2 amp charge.

. Will the battery charge?
They will charge just like a normal lead acid battery, you don't need to do anything special. However, if your system requires more power than the bike is producing it will eventually drain the battery. If you need more power from the system the battery will not increase the power the bike is putting out.
You can use a normal lead acid charger to charge the battery as long as the charger put out less amps than the capacity rating of the battery.

I'm just trying to decide how to mount it and whether to provide a protective box.

I haven't ordered one yet, but I contacted both eBatt and Turntech a couple of months ago. Turntech wrote back the same day with detailed answers to my questions. The eBatt guy wrote back several days later with short answers. All other things being equal, I will definitely buy the Turntech soon because I think the customer service will be better. Thanks for all the reviews and pictures everyone!

In my humble opinion it is slightly more complicated than that. Depends on what a charger manufacturer defines as 'trickle' and how long on the charger is on.

All those variables go away if the voltage is measured at the battery - too much voltage is not good for a battery. I've tested my Battery Tender Jr and it is truly awesome.

With the old battery I had to constantly check the night before if it still had enough juice for the ride. I did not even check this one and it has always started. The only issue I had was the Husky terminal is a little too small for the bolts supplied. Hold the terminal with pliars and not your hand when you drill it out.

If I had the Battery Tender I'd use it too.

Turntech's instructions said it's simple and I just applied them to a charger I have which has a 2 amp rate, a trickle rate and a fast charge or start rate.

Whoops, missed that on their FAQ page. Sounds like no trouble at all, really.
