  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

'08 TE 450 or 610?

Besides the obvious cubes and weight, what's the difference?

450 has DOHC, a good thing
450 is lighter, also good
450 is available and cheaper (about $500, usually)
450 has closer ratio box, no good for hwy, but better off hwy?

Is this close? What did I miss?

I like the lighter part alot, not sure I like the loss of a taller gear in 6th, though.

I may need to ride it 50-60 miles sometimes on interstate/US hwys to get where I need to be and back.

What do you think?

It depends on how you want to use the bike. If your looking for a hardcore performance off-road racer with a street tag then the 450 is the way to go, but all that performance comes at a cost...higher maintenance. The 610 is heavier and slower and wont have the off-road prowess of the 450 but will be waaaay better on-road and come with a less rigorous maintenance schedule. Hope this helps. P.S. unless you run SMR type gearing which would be stupid tall for off-road the TE450 (and you) in no way will be happy at 70mph on road for an hour. 55-60mph cruising is obtainable however, just go up 1 tooth on the front.

Duh...SMR gearing?

Two different bikes here ... If you want a dirt bike, it is the 450 and it will be limited on the street but you can gear it with sprockets to make the trip ... It will still have a hard rail for a seat though unless you fluff it some how ..... The other is a ~fast street bike than can go off road to some degree ...

I have both and I would ride the 450 maybe 20 miles on the road and would ride it 50-60 miles if my life depended on it and maybe under some circumstances of less seriousness, but hopefully not very often.

What kind of off road are you thinking about?

The SMR450 is the supermoto version the TE450. The SMR and TE share the same internal gearing but because the SMR is designed as a street bike from the factory it's geared to the moon (much larger counterhsaft sprocket and much smaller rear sprocket). The SMRs first gear is almost too high for street use, it will cruise at 65-70 just fine, and in sixth gear the bike tops out around 100mph (indicated) because it runs out of power, not gearing.

I've got an '07 TE450 with a one tooth larger sprocket and it does 65 give or take on hwy. Still kicks @$$ offroad, can still pull front wheel 1-4th with no effort, plus was able to squeeze a few more MPH out of the bike. Gonna try a one tooth smaller rear sprocket and see what that gets me.

As stated, completely different bikes. The 610 is a road bike with dirt capabilities, the 450 a dirtbike with minor road capabilities. IMO, I would never dream of using my 450 for a 50 mile trip down the highway to get to a riding spot. Its just not meant for it. Thats a dual sport ride, not a dirtbike ride. Plus, you'd be soon out of gas at the trail head. If your an Enduro type guy, try to find a way to skip the road miles and get the 450. If your not, consider the 610. Always try to test ride before you buy too.

If you plan on doing much road use get the 610. You can always manage the 610 offroad but the 450 wont be fun onroad at all.
