  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

08 te 510 wont run with dead battery

TRAILDUDE

Husqvarna
AA Class
Long trail ride and we stop for a break. Go to start and the TE has an error code displayed and wont start. the relay clicks like the battery is dead. So I go for the kick start with no luck. So we swap the battery with my friends KTM EXC and she fires right up.

So just for giggles i disconnect the battery on my TE with the bike running and the engine sputters to a stop. Man i really dont like the fact the bike wont run without a battery, or a dead battery.

We put the dead battery in my buddies KTM, dont even connect the leads, and he kicks her to life.

The TE should be able to run with a dead battery using the kick starter. Just another down side to the fuel injection I guess.

Yes, they did a poor design on this I think also. But, I wouldn't trade my TE450 for ANY KTM "EVER". Was the KTM FI? Technically (I think) the battery has to have a minimum 7.5 volts left in it to do its job. I leave mine on the tender if I am not riding for a while. Do you have your stock battery? I had to replace mine once already in the 450 but the 610 is still great. Not a cheep battery, 130.00! Still love the bikes though.

The 610 does the same thing, all the bike needs to run battery-less is a cheap capacitor.

Tell me more.

Does that mean having a capacitor hookup to the terminals, and then you can kick the bike over. I guess you would have to kick it over a few times to build up a charge in the capacitor to be able to drive the fuel pump.:excuseme:

The 610 doesn't have a kick starter but it bump starts with only a capacitor so I can only think a bike with a kick starter would start. Or you could jump start it if you have another battery available.

Here's the evidence:

The capacitor is just a 4700uf 35v electrolytic capacitor from radio shack.

Very interesting, will have to investigate this further.

This is the one reason I was reluctant to go to the fuel injection models.

No point having a kick starter if the bike won’t run when the volts falls below 7.5 so I believe.

But, with one of these in my back pack,
(if it will work on the 010 450 I will be happy)

Only other bitch is the fuel tank is crap on this model, what were they thinking.

But overall it’s a much better bike than the 07 450 I had, handling, lighter and a more smoother power delivery.

This is not new news for Husky's EFI bikes.... If one of your battery connectors starts to come loose, the bike will start sputtering and eventually die if/when the screw falls out. It sucks but that's what we have through 2010.... I still have to question why they went Mikuni (not a big name in FI systems) and why they accepted a crappy support package for the FI. Perhaps it was due to the "new" factor of FI on real dirt bikes and not knowing any better?

I would guess and say (like most things in manufacturing) it was $$ driven decision. EFI on trials bikes has been around for a few years now.

There are a few EFI systems that use a mag for juice vice HAVING to have a certain amount of juice in the battery to power the FI.

The benefits out weigh the detractions for me, just make sure you top the battery off in between rides. I am still on my stock battery in my 2007 KTM 525. All I do is top it off with a tender after winter. Seems I can't kill that battery!
